Amazon Chops Garmin Nuvifone G60 Price By Two Thirds In the First Month

Our recommended price for the Nuvifone G60 was death, payable by the handset, not the prospective buyer. Until that can be arranged, though, Amazon's plunging $200 discount (on a $300 phone!) will have to do. More »

Garmin Has Style Lapse: Releases Faux-Diamond Enhanced Nuvi GPSs

Garmin's had a tiny stylistic brain-fart with some new Nuvi GPSs. Imagine a cheesy glimmering gadget suckered-on to your windshield, sending glittering—and distracting—shafts of light into your car... that's kind of what you've got in the "light rose" and "black diamond" editions of the Nuvi 250 and 760. They're covered in colored faux-diamonds. Yuck. The red, white and blue editions (also new) we can appreciate. But in a few years, in a look back at recent gadget history, crystal-covered GPS units will be consigned to the "what the hell were they thinking?" category. [Aving via Navigadget]

Garmin's Nuvifone Gets Delayed 'Til 2009

Garmin has just made a announcement stating that the much-hyped Nuvifone GPS/cellphone product is going to be delayed until the "first half of 2009." Apparently "meeting some of the carrier specific requirements will take longer than anticipated," so it's going to miss its previously mentioned slot at the end of this year. Sounds like bad news for a phone that's entering an increasingly populated multi-purpose handset market. [GPSTracklog]

Garmin's New Nuvi 500 GPS Does Driving, Walking, Boating Nav in One Unit

Garmin has just announced a new member of the Nuvi GPS range, the 500 series. In a first for Nuvi, the rugged, waterproof 500 units are specifically designed to be multipurpose, with maps for driving, walking, cycling and boating built in. For out-doorsy types, there's a shaded digital elevation map option, and a dedicated compass page and tracklog. Plus the battery is a swappable 8-hour Li-ion type, so you can carry a spare for extended trips away from a power source. The 500 comes with City Navigator, and topographic maps of the US, while the 550 has highway coverage of the US and Canada, but no topographic data. The units are on show at the British International Motor show in London form today, and go on sale soon in the US for $499. Press release below. More »

Garmin Oregon Touchscreen GPS, First Images Emerge

Monday's leak of info about Garmin's upcoming Oregon touchscreen GPS line has now been followed by some images and screenshots. And though the mapping functions pretty much follow the earlier Colorado line, the units look very different—apparently being pretty buttonless indeed. For walkers, the 200 is a simple basemap unit, the 300 has worldwide maps with shaded relief, while the 400t adds in preloaded U.S. topographic maps and a 3D view. The 400i has maps for US inland lakes and the worldwide basemap, while the 400c has BlueChart® g2 coastal charts for sea-farers. When on sale in the Fall, the 400 units will cost $639.99, the 300 $533.32 and the basic 200 $479.99. Press release below. More »

    New Garmin Line Leaked

It appears that retailers have leaked Garmin's upcoming GPS line. Amazon had listed relatively blank pages of the new 200, 300, 400c, 400i and 400t while Buy.com got even more specific with complete details on the Garmin Oregon 200 ($450) and Garmin Oregon 400C ($600). Apparently the Oregon is very similar to Garmin's Colorado (pictured here). The 3-inch, 240x400 pixel screen seems identical with the most noticeable upgrades coming in form factor—as GPSTracklog points out, the Oregon is one inch shorter and half an ounce lighter than the Colorado. For the Garmin fans in the audience, here are the full specs on each model: More »
