Umbrella Design Competition

Our pals at TreeHugger put out a call to re-engineer the umbrella into a less wasteful and more environmentally sound gadget. (33 million umbrellas are sold annually in the U.S., and it seems like I've trashed ten thousand of them personally.) More than 100 people sent in original designs —some crackpot, others brilliant — and most of them made the umbrella more functional as well as eco-friendly or at least eco-trendy. A panel of judges (including yours truly) narrowed the entries down. Now it's your turn to choose the winner from among the finalists who will be spotlit on TreeHugger all this week. So head over and vote on your favorite. —Noah Robischon
