Panasonic Press Conference: It Made Us Sleepy

CENTERPIECE: The Panasonic press conference, despite being one of the most crowded, was a let down. It felt like an infomercial, and you couldn't change the channel. They showed off three new sizes of their 1080p plasmas: 103-inch, 58-inch, 50-inch and a prototype 42-inch model and emphasized (repeatedly and at great length) plasmas over LCD.

    PRICETAG: 103-inch — $69,999.95; everything else TBA

MADE US SAY, HUH? Japanese professor informing us that Panasonic plasmas relieve eye fatigue.

ACHILLES HEEL: All the rhetoric about the quality of LCD went right down the tube after seeing Sharp's 108-inch Aquos LCD, which blows away the Panasonic 103-inch plasma.

WHAT THEY DIDN'T SAY: Sony - they literally bleeped the word out of one video.

BEST SPEC: Eva Longoria has a Panasonic plasma in every room in her house.

OVERHEARD: We couldn't hear anyone because they kept walking out.

REMINDS US OF: The well-worn plasma vs. LCD ad campaign Sharp's got going.

SNAP JUDGMENT: Nothing new other than inch sizes; B-O-R-I-N-G.

    GRADE: C
