Rather than continue hammering on AMD while they're down, Intel is apparently taking AMD's troubles as a little break of their own, delaying the launch of three 45nm quad-core Core 2 processors (Yorkfields) until Feb. or March, depending on AMD's release schedule for its upcoming tri-core and Phenom processors. This kind of reminds us of when Toyota wanted to raise its own prices to help out GM and Ford, which makes us sad. We prefer the far bloodier and more competitive processor wars of a couple years ago. [Digitimes via Inquirer]
Intel Delays 45nm Quad-Core CPUs to Give AMD a Breather

Makes sense though. Phenom isn't even competitive with the current 60nm Intel chips.
This way they get to continue to charge full price for their backstock of older Core2's.
AMD haters rejoice! No competition = higher prices and less innovation!
perfect picture.
IF AMD goes down Intel will be the only major PC CPU chip manufacturer left. Sure they dont want AMD to die. The reason : "Standard Oil" and "AT&T".
AMD isn't that down and out. They do own ATi too.
Windhawk's Law: The more free-market competition, the faster your pr0n gets delivered.
Lol, because ATI is doing sooooo well too

So this is collusion, right? Or are we going to call it something else?
Oh poor poor ATI, let's delay our next jump in technology to give them time to compete with us.
Somehow, I don't think that's what really happened there...
I feel bad for AMD. Sure they made some dumb CEO moves as in, not firing the current one but man they get to work over there. Or do they enjoy being the Wal-Mart of the CPU world? If so they should cut their prices even further.
@mullingitover: No, For it to be collusion they would have to be in the decision together. They aint, Intel made a tactical decision to wait a while to release this new stuff, so they can sell off current stock, wait for manufacturing prices to drop etc, and wait to see what happens with the competition.
There was collusion here between petrol stations, they kept their prices artificially high, and agreed with each other that no one should lower their prices below a certain point.
@mullingitover: what P.S. said,or how cable companies decide to carve up territories so they wont have to compete with each other.
Balls?
Am I the only one pissed about this? I wanted to get a new computer in January with my Christmas money but now I have to wait even longer to get a pc that can play Crysis. Nvidia had better have a 9 series out by then.
The irony is AMD gave their Ceo an 8% raise this yr too. Seriously that's a mighty fine raise for watching your share value plunge 50% in the last 6 months and your competitor creaming you.
Come on AM3 socket, that's all I'm waiting for, sweet delicious DDR3 at an affordable cost.
Come on AMD! Now you're holding up everybody like the fat kid in gym class.

They're not doing it to give AMD time to compete. Without competition, they're restnig on their laurels (aka, doing fuckall and charging just as much for it). If you really like Intel, you should be rooting for Phenom to be as beastly as the A64 was; that's the only way that Intel is going to keep firing on all cylinders.
They've already underclocked some of their chips (in comparison to what they could be running with 100% stability) due to lack of competition. These are dark days.
Yorkfields? I thought the new 45nm Intels were called Penryn?
I'm confused and disoriented.
what a load of bollocks. Intel is having problems with its 45-nm process and made this spin of giving AMD a breather...
on the other hand, this reminds me of the time when Microsoft invested 150million to keep Apple afloat, because if the latter bellies up, Microsoft will become a full-pledge monopoly and bill gates wont like that...
if AMD goes down, Intel will be broken up like the monopolies of yore, AT&T anyone?
