According to AppleInsider, Apple plans to adopt Intel's ultra-mobile PC platform for a new generation of portable devices. Rumor has it that Apple has decided to use Intel's upcoming 45-nanometer "Silverthorne" chip in multiple new devices in 2008, with the most likely candidates being a next-gen iPhone and a UMPC.
Silverthrone was specifically designed for cellphones and UMPCs, using a mere tenth of the power consumption of a typical laptop chip while retaining the speed of a second-gen Pentium M. In addition to it being super-efficient, it's also much cheaper to manufacture than current mobile chips, which should lead to lower prices (or higher profit margins) for any devices it's placed into.
In any case, Apple seems pretty dedicated to the platform, and with "multiple devices" promised, that's gotta be more than just the 3G iPhone we all know is coming. Could it be a new tablet? An ultra-portable laptop? It could be something like the image up top, which is a prototype created by Intel that can run for 24 straight hours without needing a recharge thanks to the efficiency of Silverthorne. MacWorld is in a couple of weeks, so it's possible that something using the platform will be announced then. Time will tell, but it certainly hints at pretty exciting things. [AppleInsider]

this is pretty awesome tech. i'd love to see what the fusion processor could do in applications like this, but more capable (more hungry though, i imagine).
Prepare yourself for another $200 price drop 67 days after the iPhoneII comes out
Mmm next gen iPhone.... [drooling] This is exactly the sort of announcement/rumor/fanboy fodder I've been hoping for, and I feel better for having held off on the current iPhone.
Prepare for another $200 dollar price drop about 2 months after the iPhone II comes out.
@Joseph: A joke so good you posted it twice!
Make it a tad taller, and it won't look quite so much like a really fancy rear view mirror.
If it's an ultraportable, it's going to have to compete with ASUS which is selling like heroin hotcakes drizzled with crack syrup.
@OMG!!! Ponies!!!: LSD fritters sell better.
@OMG!!! Ponies!!!: great, now i have the image of crack syrup in my head...and not the way you meant it.
Are there any estimates of how these stack up against the current Samsung processors used in the iPhone now?

"like heroin hotcakes drizzled with crack syrup. "
too funny!
It probably blends nicely, too!
If this is true it must mean that Apple believes in the Silverthorne CPU and that, in turn, means that a lot of great gadgets will be created using this chip. I've been disappointed at Intel for creating the A110/A100 since that dang chip is too slow. I'm hoping that they will redeem themselves with Silverthorne.
This thing should be renamed "apples ultra-mobile platform" that way, we can instantly call anyone else who uses it, an apple ripoff.
@EMoShunz: So much for my breakfast.
@konakazi: I just got the personal asset insurance through State Farm for $600. :D The day a new iPhone is announced is the day mine happens to get 'stolen'.
apple just keeps coming out wit the best stuff.. pc.. is lookin like crap.. i feel sorry for them.. maybe steve show help them out.. ..... ha ha not..
@EMoShunz: Just threw up. Thanks.
I'm really curious how Intel got a second-gen speed device to operate at 10% of the wattage. Sounds like it's just a chip that runs at that frequency, but doesn't actually have the computing power of the chip. Sure you could make a 486 chip run at 2ghz, but it won't actually operate that fast.
the return of the newton. :)
I think it's too early to go with intel. Intel is unproven in the ultra mobile space. There as a great post on Ars about ho things ill heat up at the 32nm level. while not directly stated, it is implied that intel is not expected to be competitive with ARM until then. Personally I hope that Apple plays it conservatively and goes with an omap3 or something similar for its next iphone.

@dhaberer: it's called magic!
that form factor has a lot of "gee wow"-itty to it. But doesnt seem terribly practical.
These pointdexters need to work on making a laptop fit into a cell, not a boat oar, not a large bar of soap.
A cellphone sized doohickey that will fit in the cell pocket on all those "Chrome" messenger bags.
But hey, if it has USB 2.0 and maybe firewire and can run Sonar 7.0.2 I might rock it.
What nonsense..
Nonsense hmm??
*ahem* *clears throat*
