That WiMax Eee PC we heard about last week was confirmed at the Asus/Sprint/Intel press conference today, coming in 7, 8 and 8.9-inch models and a variety of colors.

suck it, early adopters whom i envied up until 14 seconds ago!
well. i think precedent has been set so that all current Eee owners should expect a $100 gift certificate.
i was waiting all day to hear some news about this. looking forward to the details!
glad i got mine thru costco. its going right back to them!
Good things come those that wait.

I bought a 4G on Saturday...I'm not at all disappointed I did not wait. I needed it (or something like it) now, there will always be future upgrades down the pike. It's eBay fodder the day I can get a 16G though ;-)
see, this is why I waited...I knew they'd release a bigger, better model. This almost certainly means a price cut to current models!

"The larger screen size - rumoured for some time - will provide a resolution of 1024 x 600, Asus said."
So it will finally be worthy of buying. The entire time I've been waiting for a larger screen.
"They'll appear in Q2, Asus said."
But I guess I will have to wait just a little longer! Most likely this summer they'll be out. I guess the chick on the beach was hinting that all along. lol
Can't used WiMax here anyways because it's frickin' expensive, so that's no loss for me.
That's good news, I'm kinda glad I waited. Actually, maybe not since I waited for the Dell Latitude XT Tablet and that ended up being about $800 more than I was willing to pay for it. Hopefully the new Eee PC models won't have too much of a price premium.
Spiffy. I wonder what costs'll be like?
@nutbastard: Thanks man... I knew this day was coming, but I do take a little solace in the fact the new model only has an 8.9" screen not a 10 inch screen as rumored. That, and I still love the damn thing, even with the wimpy 7" screen.
@nutbastard: ditto!
I hope these new larger screens debut along with the new intel mobile chip (isn't is called memrom? i can't remember)
Asus, keep at it. Minimize overall dimensions and max screen. Minumum 9", better 10", HI resolution screen, SSD and full conectivity, if not standard then provide the option to upgrade. I will buy this as a business device on the road.
IMO...seems like too many options for screen sizes. One of the things that made the originals so attractive were that it had 2 SKUSs right?
And isn't the point of the EEE to be CHEAP? Like $400 cheap?
It is getting more attractive but I suspect it will run maybe $550 and even at 8.9" the screen is still f#@king small and will not be that useful for prolonged productivity. A used Vaio TR3 costs about $300 on eBay now with a 12" widescreen monitor, 40 Gb HD, 1 Gb RAM, DVD and WiFi on an XP setup and is still a full productivity ultracompact laptop at 3 lbs and maybe a 5% larger footprint (I really can't imagine using a keyboard any smaller for more than basic email and notes).
what i need now is to get wimax usb/mini pcie take out its guts and solder it onboard just right beside my bluetooth... damn you asus i hate you.
uhm calling on tnkgirl and jkk :)
Only the 8" screen will fit into the same chasis as now. The other screen sizes will be in bigger lappies, per ASUS.
The Eee is cool particularly because of how small and light it is.
A bigger screen will just make it heavier and less attractive and distinctive than it is now for its current attributes.
Also, bear in mind that in ASUSland Q2 usually means Q4.
WiMax on Sprint has zero attraction for me. I won't be subscribing, just as I don't subscribe to T-Mobile's data plan, and how I won't be AT&T's slut so that I can have an iPhone.
See the rest of you in a year. In the meantime, I'm typing this reply on, you guessed it, my Eee.
Zero complaints here, though maybe I'll retrofit the 8" screen to my Eee, since I imagine I will be able to so do, since I'm running XP already.
wimax on sprint IS attractive to me as long as I can get it affordably. Ive been using data on my sprint sero plan anytime I travel or am not at home and its always worked very well. FOr $30 a month I have a data connection anywhere by tethering to my WM phone. I have a feeling wimax wont be anywhere near as cheap though
where are you finding used vr3 for $300?
1024 by 600 would be nice, but even the upper-end of the previous models was stretching the price range, in my opinion. If they can get these out at the current prices, and drop the originals to the $199 to $299 level (as they originally claimed), then they'll have something.
Who am I kidding, they already have something...
Yeah I'm not gonna bite on this one. I have a 13" Sony Vaio and I never use it because the screen is small and keyboard uncomfortable. That size looks ridiculous to use long term or even on a flight.
There's a breaking point in efficiency of laptops where it gets so limited and small that it's a hindrance to getting work done. This is such a limit.
Not to mention one of the nice things about a real laptop is being able to watch a DVD with headphones instead of the in-flight movie. All that is out the window with these micro machines. I'd rather just take a pad and paper to write down ideas on the move than deal with all those limitations.
I think these little systems are cool, but what do you guys actually use these for? I'm having a hard time justifying the purchase.
