Samsung has just popped out a ridiculously large 82" LCD TV, boasting ultra high-definition resolution of 3840 x 2160. That is a four-times increase on conventional LCD standards, and word on the street is Japan has already begun testing video broadcast in ultra high-definition. We are sure that'll eat bandwidth faster than the cookie monster (Chris) eats cookies. That aside, the picture rendition is jaw dropping.

Just when the US starts catching up with hd television, Oh Japan you dont cease to amaze me. :P
2160p. That's cool, too bad we will have to wait for Blu-Ray 2 and Xbox 720 to be able to get that kind of resolutions from sources. I still haven't seen a TV broadcast in 1080p.
....it's glorious....
mmmm... so big and juicy.
Your $3000 HD set is officially obsolete. :p
Meh. I'm still waiting for super mega ultra high definition television. It won't be available until the year 2083. I know because Doctor Who and I took a trip on the Tardis and saw it. Even he was impressed, and it's tough to impress Doctor Who.
who cares?
here in italy we still have old 576i broadcast...
I remember i saw ultra high definion on the NAB convention also there in LV last year and i tried to take pictures with the best camera i had there and its just not possible to completly see all the detail the image of the screen produces, its absolutley amazing. Too bad that broadcasting it is extremely hard to do, whenever they start broadcasting 2160p i will definately buy an UHDTV.
I just love watching SUMO in hi def.
Gee, I can really tell how Ultra Hi-Def that is on my Ultra Low-Def monitor :-)
When is the industry going to start putting Pixel Density on TV specs?
Nobody ever sits closer than 14' from an 82" screen...and everybody knows that at 14' away, you can't tell the difference between 1080p and 2160p on anything smaller than 100"!!!! OMG, this is stupid!
On a serious note: if upscaled DVD's look so great on HDTV's, wouldn't it be worthwhile to have a 2160p TV before broadcasts/disks are available in that resolution? Of course, you'd have to have a video scaler that worked well at that resolution, which could take a while (IIRC, the first 30" 1600p computer monitors would only run at native resolution because there weren't video scalers available to handle so many pixels.)
The resolution is so bad, I bet that you can't even see my inappropriate tattoo.
I'll buy one when it get to be higher resolution than real life.
I am so sick of seeing these stories about big TV's. I'm looking forward to CES being over already.
Sorry for the negative post. I just had to get that off my chest.
actually... the cookie monster doesn't eat as many cookies now, since all our children are obese.. now he claims cookies are a sometimes food... lame
@pek Obviously you do if your're here to drool and troll. Makes me wonder if this standard will be the next leap after HD...
@Suijin: That already exists. It's called 35mm film.
hey dont call it ultra high def if it isn't UHDV (wiki) when we get to 4320x7680 (33 megapixels) and get the 22.2 channel audio that is being developed for it I don't think there will be much room (need) to improve
don't get my hopes up (that enough for ya Suijin?)

off-topic: @oo0cyst0oo: lol Futurama FTW
(its obscene tattoo BTW)
This is one step closer to me eventually being able to say: 'But it's HDTV. It's got better resolution than the real world.'
Also, is that Melbourne I see?
Hmmm...I wonder if they'll drop the "interlaced" formats entirely by the time this resolution is in common use.
I'll buy it ONLY IF it has HDMI 1.8f on it!
Interesting that at least two shots on the demo reel appear to have come to Melbourne, Australia.
To? From.
Jeez, I need a bigger monitor just to look at pictures of that thing.
@mferrari: damn, i suck. sorry.
OBSCENE TATTOO FTW!
The scary thing is it's going to be real someday, look at the original 4inch black and white TV's that first came out. If you told them about 1080p they would have laughed in disbelief at the time. Of course it's going to be a trade show display for probably 10 years, the technology might end up in a Jumbotron or something first.
These quad-HD jobs require four DVI inputs, so forget plugging your 360 or PS3 into 'em without a video processor of some kind. We use them in medical labs to replace 6 and 8 lcd packs; even fluoroscopy is sexy at that resolution.
@EQC: So a viewing angle of 27.4 degree is enough for you?
I want to have at least 90 degrees (for a starter).
So sitting distance would be 3.42' and not 14'.
OMG, why people never think about this! This is stupid!!!!
Hahaha thats Melbourne on the post. Cnrs or Elizabeth and Bourke Streets, what are the odds?
Well, apparently the human eye can see the equivalent of 81MP. This UHDTV is 8.2MP. I guess we still have some room to improve.
@halopower67: If you're talking about the NHK demo, that's double this again. NHK was doing 7680 x 4320, wheras this 'UHDTV' is only half the resolution of that demo. NHK said they were working on (or maybe already have) doing live transmission, though I'm not sure (at least uncompressed) that it can be done wirelessly. The cameras used 16 HD-SDI connections, which run at a bitrate of 1.485 Gbit/s.
@dave-o: Of course, you could plug 4 networked PS3's/360's into it...and play multiplayer with each guy getting full control of his own machine and a 1080p viewable area. Or, better yet, put 4 people on each of those machines, and have each 1080p split 4 ways -- 16 people trying to look at one (big) TV.
Or, you know, save some money (and logic) and get 4 HDTV's.
by the time this is mainstream enough to have all the issues worked out to a point where i am happy (like hdtv just is), and price is low enough that i am happy (like hdtv will be in about a year and a half on the previously mentioned issue-less tv's) i will have such bad eye sight because of my age i won't care.
Wow!! OOH! AAAH! But with our computers we cannot even see the damn pictures in ultra high def so they look damn just regular def to me.
Hey I just want 2 really nice 1080p in my Hizzouse. 40 in the bedroom and 60 in the entertainment room and I will be fine. Hell I still have my projection screen 1080i that I am still McLovin from 6 years ago. People still are amazed with the damn picture. I cannot wait until this technology comes into play just so the prices come back into reality. I remember when a very good TV that sat in the living room cost between $400-$800. Now is $2500+. Once this technology comes out at least it will be bringing the cost of the current technology down. Higher resolution, thinner, lower cost = better chance I will get those 2 TV's this or next year.
I love how you can actually see the vignetting in most of the pictures
uh ... weird.
I'm so stoked Samsung is looking at the 80" market - not sure what price they want for that though. I had stopped at Pioneer, Panasonic and even LG to ask them if they had an 80" unit. I know a LOT of people looking to upgrade their old 65" screens to something 1080p and LARGER. Only one is considering a projector but he has crazy money I'll never have in my lifetime. Most cheaper projectors just don't look that good in my opinion although I think there is surely a big market for cheap projectors.
All the reps from Pioneer, Panasonic and LG basically said the same thing - we are getting a lot of requests for that size range but can't currently comment on units of that size being released at this time. Hopefully that means they are developinng them or of course it just could mean a. they didn't want to just say no or b. they get a lot of requests but no one is listening (I find a lot of that in all industries - auto, computer, HT, cell phones, etc.)
@waterdrop Xbox 720? more like Xbox 1440
Definitely Melbourne in that streetscape pic, Also Docklands in the yacht picture and I'm pretty sure the picture of the maps was taken at a shop in Melb aswell!
Ugh.. too bad Samsung stopped selling their TVs in Japan
