Hands-on With iPhone Firmware 1.1.3

We've got the walk-through video above, but here's what we think of iPhone Firmware 1.1.3. The Google Maps location finding is excellent, probably because Apple made sure they programmed in Moscone's data points correctly into their location services. It takes a while to zero in onto your location because it's not GPS, which means it's not really that great for turn-by-turn directions where you need to know whether or not to make a right at the next light.

Multi-recipient SMS is exactly what it sounds like. Pick more than one recipient, send a message, and it gets delivered to everyone. What's nice is that this set of people get saved as a "conversation" so you can send more messages to them without having to type in their names again.

Icon reorganization: same as what we've seen before. Hold down an icon, everything starts shaking, then you can drag stuff around to a new location. Drag an icon to the edge of the screen to get to the next or previous page. Swipe left and right to switch pages.

Webclips also works as advertised, letting you to bookmark a page onto your home screen. There's nothing special about this other than the fact that you can remember a specific part of the page and go to it every time.

  • And you can manually manage your music and videos now instead of sync only! About time!

  • It's pretty slick. I like it. It will be great when third party apps are supported, but I don't see myself filling 9 pages of web links, I use my bookmarks for those.

I do like that you can slide the home screen over with your thumb and tap an icon on another page with your index finger while keeping your thumb on the screen and it will open, and when you hit the home button it goes back to the main screen and not the second home screen. Hard to explain, but try it and you'll see what I mean.

  • I can't wait to install it when I get home =)

Oh Mr. Jobs, thank you good sir.

  • And yet, copy and paste is STILL left out.

  • Any word on how to view lyrics for songs? I have a ton of lyrics for songs on my iPod Touch and I'm assuming the action to view lyrics is the same on the iPhone.

  • so i just tried to install 1.1.3 on my iphone and it completely ruined it...my mac doesn't recognize the phone anymore and on the iphone screen it just shows that plug with an arrow pointing to the itunes icon, like when the phone first comes out of the box...i hadn't jailbroken my phone or anything...not sure what to do...

  • You can also play songs now right from the iPhone when connected to iTunes like you have been able to do with iPods for years.

Disk mode is not yet available.

I installed iTunes 7.6 so I don't know if these options are available in 7.5.

  • Any idea if this will affect turbosim or stealth sim? Will it block them?

  • No improvements to the PHONE functionality? Arg. How hard would it be to program an audible reminder that you have missed a call or have voicemail waiting? I can't tell you how many times I've gone hours without returning a call because I didn't realize I got one (partly because the volume is low and the vibrate is weak on the phone -- but I know that can't be fixed). And it would be nice to have a few non-childish ringtones so I don't turn bright red when I'm in a meeting and someone calls. Lots of other shortcomings could be easily fixed, like a vibrate-then-ring option, which is really the most useful mode for any phone. Why do they continually ignore the shortcomings of the PHONE features? I like the iPhone on balance, but I find that I can't recommend it to friends and family as a phone replacement because it is so far behind in terms of basic and important cellphone functions.

  • @SockMonkey: I haven't owned an iPod so I don't know what you are talking about. But earlier I was able to listen to the music on iPhone while it was connected to iTunes and charging.

  • woo hoo!! seven minutes to download then it's time to figure out where the hell i am!!

  • Would have been cool MMS or at least Copy/Paste, but to tell you the truth I would just like a game, a least one damn game (not on the web "2.0", but installed). The SDK can come fast enough, hopefully there will be at least one decent game and a decent app or two from the sea of crap that will flood in.

Also, some sort of Venturi type deal in the underguts of the software to speed the EDGE tube a bit.

  • Hey, check out the Gmail application, you now have more than just an Inbox, Sent Mail and Trash. A few other things if you go to the Google.com page.

  • I have been trying to update for an hour and it downloads the update file okay but stops when I try to install the file on the phone. Says that the iPhone software update server can't be contacted and to try back later. Any ideas how I can get past this? Updated to 7.6 and everything. Am I the only one?

  • Wow. Attempted to upgrade my touch to 1.1.3, and it DEFINITELY sent it into recovery mode, forcing me to erase all my data...

  • Check your new mailbox features. Theres more than just Inbox, Sent Mail and Trash. Also check out the google homepage, there are new tabs at the top allowing for the calendar and reader, etc. etc.

  • @The Great Aussie Evil:

Here, here. Is it that freaking hard for them to build in such a basic feature?

  • how about landscape typing in email and txt messaging? I've never understood why this extremely useful feature is restricted to Safari, where I type the least.

  • Just updated to 1.1.3 and all features are great! Can't wait for more...

  • Treo's have been doing this since they came out!

Multi-recipient SMS is exactly what it sounds like. Pick more than one recipient, send a message, and it gets delivered to everyone. What's nice is that this set of people get saved as a "conversation" so you can send more messages to them without having to type in their names again.

  • My update went fine, though I had restored to a non-jailbroken 1.1.2 a while back. I really like the webclip thingy, though the faux-gps seems very uninspiring to me (it could narrow me down to what city I am in, but that's about all)

I'm still disappointed that there's no spamfilter.

  • Copy/Paste is probably still left out because Safari converts text to graphics, so you wouldn't be able to copy/paste anything from the web. Even though I could still see a use for emails, etc., admitting to this shortcoming in Safari is probably worse than not mentioning that copy/paste isn't there... nat saying I agree with it, just saying why I think it is what it is (lord knows I'd love copy/paste).

But anyway, the real reason I came here is because it no longer says AT&T at the top... it's just the bars and the wifi or edge symbol... is that normal? or did something screw up in my update?

  • video messed on my end

  • @bandit:
How wrong you are. Don't expect the iPhone to remind you for being a dumbass and turning the volume down. While it would be nice for some improvements (the speakerphone), the phone itself is pretty nice. I like how simple it is to conference call and switch between calls.

However, what I think would be awesome for the phone is if they took a hint from WM6 on the HTC Touch. It has a really sweet feature on the home screen where you tap people's picture to dial. Also, to keep people like you from complaining, they should use automatic rington profiles (so it puts it on vibrate when you have something in the calendar).

About the ringtones, whats wrong with "ring ring"?

  • any one test if it break apps and unlock?!

  • @djay1717: same here

  • @BANDIT: You do know that they've had custo ringtones for 4 months now, right?

  • @BANDIT: and not only iTunes ones... you can make your own for free in Garageband

  • HEY LOOK, it only took me HOURS to figure out that I could use one account for all gawker sites. Well at least I am an idiot.

I will admit that the best part of this is the pseudo gps. That was one of the major things that kept me from buying an iPhone. Aside from 3g and the ability to use my own mp3s for ringtones.

  • Update successful, the new Map function is great and located me to about 100 feet.

Custom home screen works well (zoom in to adjust your view before you save a web page)

New REDIAL function on the phone keypad (just click call to get last number dialed back).

Unfortunately it broke iToner so I've lost all of my homebrewed custom ringtones.

  • No C&P, no MMS, no iChat = not an update I'm gonna do.

  • Video doesn't work for me either!

  • Can someone explain the Maps thing a little more to me?
Does it work as well as Navizon? I mean...once it locates you, can you use that location to get directions from the way you can with Navizon? Usually it has been accurate enough for me for this to be a great tool.

Thanks for the help...still trying to decide if I want to update...

  • the only thing i this update thats even worth caring for is the new google maps... so whos going to jailbreak this thing??

  • @theespacepope: You can use your own mp3s for ringtones since the last update.

  • @gadgetchic: @gadgetchic: @nocar: that redial thing is not new

  • Image of nojo nojo at 05:11 PM on 01/15/08 *

@RoCKSTaH53: Safari converts text to graphics

    Huh?

  • I upgraded my Jailbroken iPhone, but every time I plug it into my iPhone/Headset combo dock, it comes up with the message saying that the accessory was not designed for the iPhone and asks if I would like to put it into Airplane mode. Anybody else getting this?

  • Updated to 1.1.3 and it's all that was said it would be out on the rumor sites. I'm pleased with new feature, but need cut/paste, record video and other. Will be patient...

  • Just discovered that Safari's management of pages has been updated! No more having to clean up pages when all of them are used. It now either finds an existing page that matches the new page to be opened (particularly if using webclips feature) or, recycles the oldest page opened.

  • I need a good icon for Giz

  • @kaushalmodi: before this update, you could not listen to your musing on your iPhone by browsing the music on it via iTunes and play the music on your iPhone through your computer. That's what I was referring to. Of course you have always been able to play music on the iPhone while connected to iTunes, but that was actually playing on the phone and going to the earbuds or out of the mini-speaker in the bottom of the phone.

This now allows you to play your music through the computer speakers when connected to iTunes. You could not do this prior to 1.1.3.

  • @deeboo626:
Always wait for others to test out Apple software updates before you try it on *your* Apple stuff.

  • Anyone try the google maps on the touch yet? I'm wondering how good it is at locating you over random wifi.

  • @deeboo626: I also face that problem on one of my machines. Something's gone wrong with that. I have a desktop (XP) and a laptop (Vista). I can properly sync my music on my desktop. But after I started facing the problem like yours when upgrading the firmware on my desktop, I always use my laptop for that purpose. You too can upgrade your iPhone from some other machine. The only problem would be that if that other machine is not authorized by you, you will need to once again copy all music and data afresh from your authorized machine. I hope this helps.

  • @fadedb8ta: Yeah, Gmail showed the labels as folders too before this update. You just needed to set up an IMAP account by clicking on the 'Other' tab instead of the 'Gmail' tab.

  • @MacRule36: Try doing as I explained in my 5.46PM comment. May be it can help you.

  • @gutterisatool: uhm iphone has to go into airplane mode because the cellphone signal interferes with the speakers. they always did that.

  • @SockMonkey: Hey thanks! Wow, I didn't know that.

  • Yeah, but can it send picture messages to another phone?
