Remember in Tim Burton's Batman when he asked Vicki Vale how much she weighed before zipping upward in that alley to escape the Joker's goons? If Batman had a T-PLS pneumatic "tactical line-throwing system" with a 7mm Kevlar line and titanium grappling hook, he could've brought Vicki, some of her friends, Robin AND a bag of Scooby snacks (did anyone else see that crossover cartoon?) along for the ride.
It is bulkier than most of Batman's gear at 19 pounds, but it'll shoot 120 feet (12 stories) straight up with up to 350 psi from its compressed air source. It's also super silent for stealth infiltrations. It's more Christian Bale's SWAT/ninja Batman than Michael Keaton's thinner, jaded Dark Knight—I could see it in the Tumbler's trunk. Side question: How far would someone fly if they got beaned in the chest with this thing? [Digital Force Tech via Crave]

i can think of nothing that i could use this for, but i want one. or two...
That is fantastic. Perfect for scaling my tall one-story home.
Also is "Batman's" correct in the title?
I saw something similar on the Discovery channel many moons ago, on one of their "Beyond 2000" shows. But it was a small hand held bag that just shot 100 feet of floating rope, for use rescuing people in a river or in water. I wanted one of those. This seems just big.
I've tried to build something like this, and it's always hindered by the weight of the rope - and that was sans grappling hook, just using a potato for R & D purposes. if this thing can do 100 feet straight up, it would be an effective close range knocker-downer too - the kinetic energy required to launch something like this is pretty amazing.
Of course, im not sure if that quick connect hose fitting on the gun above means it has to be plugged into a compressor, (which would make it tactically useless) or if it gets charged up via compressed air.
I would totally use this on a daily basis.
How? No idea.
But man, it'd be awesome.
I wonder how difficult it is to successfully hook something that's 100 feet above you. If you miss, you pretty much look like a big dumbass. A dumbass with a cool grappling gun that you don't know how to use.
@Munch420s: You look cool until the hook returns and knocks you out.
@nutbastard: Yes, it works on compressed air. I think when they had it on Mythbusters, they used a SCBA tank.
I don't think that counts as a valid crossover, seeing as you specifically referenced the Batman movie. Someone check with the judges.
I think Mythbusters scooped the Giz by a few months on this beastie.
I'd hate to be anywhere near one of these things if somebody were to shoot it into the air and miss whatever it was they were hoping the grapple would catch on...
i wouldnt need one but i sure as would buy one for the thrill of being able to grapple onto buildings ^_^
I don't need one of these... my dirty underwear will stick to any surface.
i always like how they promote these things with a cool kitch background.
Like magma.
A grappling hook and the sun with some photoshop circles really DO relate to the product.
It looks like it has a paintball double trigger....
this would fit great on my belt next to my leatherman
or you could larp Mortal Kombat's Scorpian.. "Get over here!! *smasho* Dave? Dave..?"
what boggles me is not how it shoots it so far, that seems easy, but is this also supposed to literally wind itself while pulling you up? or is it just to shoot and swing onto something?
I am going to sell my Little Giant ladder and pick one of these things up. Seems like it would be great for putting up Christmas lights.
I'm pretty sure this just fires a grappling hook.
But on mythbusters they did build a device which could fire a grappling hook, and a handheld winch with a small but super-powerful motor. Jamie attached it to his arm with some steel pipe, and used it to raise himself up to the rafters of a warehouse, but when he got to the top he realised he'd forgottem to create a way to release the rope, and he had to cut it and in the process, smashed his nose with the device when it flew back at his face and was bleeding a bit.
@subryu:
for that kind of winching, you need a pretty hefty motor and a capacitor that can push out a lot of juice very quickly. i think if i hooked something with this, i'd be so jazzed i wouldn't even mind having to climb the rope manually
"you mean you have to use your hands? that's like a baby's toy!"
@Spyrojoe: That Scooby/Batman crossover cartoon ruled though.
Batman's grappling gun also wasn't nearly FOUR FEET LONG.
1. replace hook with electromagnet
2. mount it to the hood of your car
3. enjoy leeching mileage off the sap in front of you
Does this baby have distance calulations? I dont want to shoot 4 stories, clear the building and hit a car.
Imagine the misfire on this baby. 350 PSI in your face and body. OUCH.
just imagine putting this on a houseboat....you'd never have to drop anchor or go harpooning the regular old way again!
and @nutbastard: that would workdamn good too! except when the 350 psi shot pushes the electromagnet through the car you're aiming at, hits the driver in the head and knocks him out cold or kills him. lol
@rimplestultskin:
i was thinking something flat faced and round for... minimum damage. problem is you couldn't effectively tag an old Saturn very well, what with the plastic body panels.
@rimplestultskin: The fishing implications of this are quite exciting. Maybe combining this with an underwater version of the crazy vomit-speaker posted earlier, to incapacitate the fish so they float to the surface?
Poles and hooks are so 20th century.
@theespacepope: yes "batman's" is right in the title, as it refers to a object in his possession lol. Hopefully soon one in my possession :D
@Balf: well the title is different today.
what about the more compact belt version?
Sure, this thing will launch a grappling hook and string a rope for you very easily. But you've still got to haul your Cheetos-laden arse up the wall by hand.
And if it's built on the same business model as the inkjet printer companies, they'll give away the launchers and charge a fortune for the rope-and-gas cartridges.
I dare you to carry one of these around in daylight without a bullet-proof vest on. Maybe if they could squeeze it inside an umbrella.
They need to team up with these guys:

I designed this system and I love your comments. It was shown on Mythbusters and the Military Channel. It was a fun design project for the government. Not an easy one to solve. This system is at the limit of safe recoil so to shoot any higher you will need to mount the system to a fixed object or use a lighter line. If you guys have any questions I would be happy to answer them…
