Golden Shellback Hands-on: Phones Can Make Calls While Underwater

I just got to play with a phone that had been waterproofed using the Golden Shellback technology, and it was pretty amazing, not to mention legit. In the video above, Golden Shellback inventor Sid Martin took a Golden Shellbacked BB Pearl, started a call, dropped it in a glass of ice water, and it all worked without a hitch.

Dexter Game Coming to iPhone (Murder Sim?)

Is GTA 4 a murder simulator? Probably not, but any game based on Showtime's Dexter damn well better be. According to a tweet by TV squad, a Dexter game is on its way to the iPhone and will be detailed later tonight at the Dexter Comic-con panel. Will we be able to use the iPhone's accelerometer to bludgeon victims? Or cut up body parts by drawing them (with multiple fingertips) on the screen? Only time will tell—because Dexter himself surely won't. [TVSquad]

Inside the Owlship from the Watchmen

FROM IO9.COM: Sure, you've seen the sweet footage of the outside of Nite Owl's garage-made submersible ship in previews for Watchmen. But today, io9 takes you inside the Owlship. More »

Windows XP Users Actually Love Vista... If They Think It's Something Else

Microsoft has a secret new operating system they're showing to XP-using Vista haters, reports Cnet's Ina Fried. Codenamed "Mojave," over 90 percent of the focus groups in San Francisco loved it, with at least one moved to effuse, "Oh wow," while using it. When can you get hold of this wondrous new operating system? Right now. Mojave is actually just plain ol' Windows Vista. More »

iPhone 2.1 Firmware Currently In Beta, More GPS Features On The Way

Gear Live has word that Apple is beta testing iPhone's 2.1 firmware and will add more GPS functionality to the phone. Specifically, the core location functions will be able to track what direction you're moving, and how fast (for turn-by-turn navigation, maybe?). Also worth noting is that iPhone SDK 2.1 is also seeding to beta testers, but cannot be used with the app store. [Gear Live]

Bill Gates vs. Steve Jobs: The Lightsaber Duel

What could be greater than a lightsaber duel between Bill Gates and Steve Jobs? A lightsaber duel where YOU get to control one. We don't want to spoil the little touches of the game, so hit the jump and see for yourself. We've already said too much. More »

ASUS Continues Flood of Eee-Branded Gear With External HD, Optical Drive and 3G Card

Still not content with keeping the Eee name only on their successful (but ballooning) line of netbooks, this unofficial but legit-looking crew of peripherals joins the Eee Box, Eee TV, Eee Monitor and Eee Enema (spot the outlier!) in further desecrating the brand. Included is an external hard disk with a fold-out USB connector, an optical drive and a 3G data connection card—which put together make up for most netbooks' feature shortcomings. No release details but we'll keep an Eee Eye out, if we can make sense of the whole mess. [Eee PC News via Laptop]

9/11 Killed Bryan Singer's Battlestar Galactica

Emergencies

Drunk British Woman Wonders When the Internet Started, Calls 911 to Ask

The Avon and Somerset Police department have published some awesome YouTube videos featuring audio from drunk and stupid people calling 999 (911 in the US) with inquiries that don't quite qualify as emergencies. In the above clip, a completely shitfaced woman really, really wants to know just when the internet started. What's amazing is how polite the 999 operator was. Awesome stuff. After the jump, a bonus video from The IT Crowd on Britain's awesome emergency response number. More »

Next Version of Installer.app For iPhone 2.0 Software Looks Like It's Getting Close

These screens were released today by the developers of Installer.app showing Installer 4, the next version that will work with jailbroken iPhones running firmware 2.0. By the slick looks of it, it looks like they're getting close. When it's done, it will be multi-threaded (meaning everything doesn't come to a halt while your sources are being updated) and support package dependencies as well. As you know, we can't wait.

Pinewood Derby iPhone: And You Thought the 3G Was Fast

If you were a Boy Scout at one time, you probably had a flashback after reading the words "Pinewood Derby." For the uninitiated, the derby is a time honored tradition where Cub Scouts race small cars they construct from a block of wood, plastic wheels and some nails. As you can see, this particular car is expertly crafted into an iPhone lookalike. More »

Lunatics Base-Jumping Off Giant Wind Turbines Have More Guts Than We Do

The idea of diving out of an airplane with essentially just a thin envelope of fabric protecting me from splattering my organs all over concrete like postmodern art makes me want to pee myself. Yet somehow jumping off a giant, bird-blending propeller blade, almost thirty stories up, makes me want to poop myself too. And that's exactly what these insane base jumpers do, on video no less. New Star Wars Series 3 Mimobot Flash Drives Are Now Up For Pre-Order

Mimobot, fine purveyors of geeky collectible flash drives, have introduced the next batch of Star Wars flash drives. There's an egg-headed C-3PO, Wicket, Imperial Guard and my favorite, Emperor Palpatine, who's channeling Dark Side force zaps at all times, keeping your data safe. Like the last batch they can play Star Wars sounds when you mount and unmount, if you want to go there. [mimobots via Underwire]

THEMIS Satellites Discover Northern Lights Are Powered By Magnetic Fields Snapping Like Rubber Bands

Five NASA satellites from the THEMIS mission were recently able to closely witness the chain of events that occurs to create the northern lights for the first time. Complex stuff going on here, but it involves the Earth's massive electromagnetic fields being stretched to their limits by magnetic bombardment from the sun, and then snapping back into place like giant rubber bands, all of which the five THEMIS birds were able to witness at precisely the right moment. Awesome. More »

Mouse Uses "Alien Technology" to Relieve Stress and RSI

Whenever a gadget is focused on ergonomics, buckle up for some seriously weird looking design. A prime example of this phenomenon can be seen in this "Alien Mouse" concept from designer Mizanur Rehman. The idea was to create a mouse that would strictly adhere to the principles of ergonomics and provide maximum comfort by molding itself to the user's hand with a body constructed of soft gel and cellulose. It even features a pulsating central core that reverberates throughout the frame to help relieve stress.
