This is a leaked official RIAA training video produced with the National District Attorneys Association telling U.S. prosecutors why they should bust music pirates: Because it'll lead them to "everything from handguns to large quantities of cocaine [and] marijuana," not to mention terrorists and murderers!
The whole video is over 60 minutes long—these are just two of the more outrageous minutes with Jim Dedman, from the NDAA, interviewing Deborah Robinson and Frank Walters from the RIAA about the benefits of going SWAT on music pirates. At one point, Walters says the piracy/drug connection can be so bad that you get asked "When you buy a CD, would you like it with or without—the with is enclosing a piece of crack or whatever the case may be."

They might be a tad disappointed if they go for my mother...
You know, Weird Al was just being sarcastic in his song, "Don't Download This Song." Looks like the RIAA took him seriously.
(By the way, if you haven't heard it, go download that song from his website or myspace page. It's hilarious, though not so much now in light of this...)
I killed for my N'sync tunes.
Damn. I'll have to hide my weapons of mass destruction.
Sigh. Back to Iraq with you, my pretties.
they suck .... lets see if they actually succeed besides those stupid companies like Rangers, BayTsp, MD, and etc that have failed or are failing...
And if the new proposed protocol comes thru, they'll find it hard 2 catch folks..
Show me someone who listens to music that doesn't hit the crack rock??
Way to go RIAA. Don't forget your towel!
I don't understand that last quote. When you buy a CD you get drugs? Huh?
goodlick to them...
A Government agency using lies and double talk to persuade law enforcement to persecute non-violent small time offenders? In my country? - I'm shocked!
@Way: Sweet, that's the solution to the woes of the music industry -- drugs in the jewel cases. That'll get more people to buy them!
Yeah, I keep crack rock in most of my CD cases. That is, when they aren't full of fake cash. If you have a big collection of pirated CDs, they are good for concealing illegal firearms or dead bodies. I even heard Al Queda is going to attack our quality of life by selling pirated CDs. Now what is a homicidal, drug dealing dude like myself going to do? Shiiiiiiit.
But I was selling Pot at school way before I started illegally downloading songs. However, this one kid that I tried to sell Pot to by calling him a chicken, called me a Turkey, then stormed off. That really changed my life!
McPirates... do you want crack with that?
Wow - I had no idea that pirating music was just as bad as dealing crack or being a terrorist. I guess I need to compare the levels of victimization created by each of these acts and it will become clear to me how much the same they all are!
Thanks, RIAA, for opening my eyes to the horrible, deadly threat of music piracy and smiting everyone that hates my freedom!
WOW.........I'm laughing my ass of but it's a scared laugh because that is a real video.....
The RIAA should earn a little extra cash authoring "The Dummies Guide to Destroying the Multi-billion Dollar Recording Industry."
I'll take mine with...
Yup, cause that's what's on all drug dealer's minds. "Let's just burn a few CDs while we cook up this rock. Hopefully the fiends didn't already pawn their stereos for the crack money."
So everyone who ever ripped music off the netz is a suspected terrorist? Shouldn't we all be dead then?
You'd have to smoke crack to want the music the RIAA members produce.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAA (X100)
This argument is actually sound for pirated cd's, but does not apply to music pirated online. The physical black market is much different and in many ways more dangerous than the digital one.
How do people really believe this especially when children and housewives have be the only people targeted by the extortion.
Actually, it was the reverse process for me. I was running guns into the Philippines and discovered the seedy underbelly of pirated music and anime and never looked back...
Seriously though, that's how they got DJ Drama and DJ Cannon. [en.wikipedia.org]
A fat guy with a haircut like that is definitely the authority on criminals selling nukular warheads concealed in pirated CDs.
Here you go, some crack and a copy of COD4 for PC.
Can someone help me work out how to get the 'with' he mentions... I've tried searching for torrents labeled 'with crack' but all I'm getting is dodgy german pr0n.
Anyone thinking that they might have actually confused program/serial "cracks" with actual crack?
I really wouldn't put it past the brilliant minds of the RIAA. It's like watching a bunch of monkey trying to hump a football.
"KNOW YOUR DOPE FIEND. YOUR LIFE MAY DEPEND ON IT! You will not be able to see his eyes because of Tea-Shades, But his knuckles will be white from inner tension and his pants will be crusted with semen from constantly jacking off when he can't find a rape victim. He will stagger and babble when questioned. He will not respect your badge. The Dope Fiend fears nothing. He will attack, for no reason, with every weapon at his command-including yours. BEWARE. Any officer apprehending a suspected marijuana addict should use all necessary force immediately. One stitch in time (on him) will usually save nine on you. Good luck. - The Chief" -- Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Best of all? It was a NDAA conference they crashed in the novel. Funny how things never change, huh?
@feckineejit: LOL,exactly.
Hmm....so does this mean I can get that comboed Barbra Streisand CD and Mac10 I have always wanted? Grateful Dead and a Desert Eagle?
@Darrone: You might be on to something there...
@Gann: I agree. They're not talking about individuals downloading pirated files, they're speaking strictly of the distribution of physical pirated CDs by career criminals. In general, I don't agree with anything the RIAA does, but I also don't see anything wrong with what's being said in this video. I would think, in most cases, any large scale production and distribution of pirated media can be traced back to a larger criminal enterprise. The prosecution of these people should be encouraged and the cooperation of the RIAA in this area is in no way a threat to the people who read Gizmodo (except for maybe Nutbastard - he seems a little sketchy).
I don't think this is so crazy... I haven't seen the whole video, but it doesn't look like they're saying that everyone who pirates CDs is also a drug dealer/addict/terrorist... what they're saying is "help us sniff out piracy because it will give you a window into investigating a group for something else you might not have had a window for before". Being that there are a LARGE number of people who pirate CDs or download music illegally, it doesn't surprise me that enforcing that law would help to get access to someone who otherwise covers their tracks pretty damn well in whatever area they are normally breaking the law.
Believe me... I think the RIAA is going about solving this problem all wrong... but we should be careful not villify them too much. Making radical claims against their radical claims doesn't help show the world that they're in the wrong. (Two wrongs don't make a right?)
What's terrible is all the old farts in charge will probably believe every ounce of nonsense they spew.
"Did you know Al Qaeda uses torrent sites to recruit potential members within the US? Did you know that every one of the college shooters in US history had illegal MP3s, which caused them to go on their shooting rampages? Did you know Ted Bundy once downloaded CCR's "Bad Moon Rising" using Napster? My friends...we have an epidemic on our hands that rivals the old zombie rampages of 1476." Judges and Lawmakers: "MY GOD!"
Wait, I thought it was buying oil that was helping the terrorists. Now it's CD's?? Geez, I musta missed the memo...
This is the proof our government will use to justify spying on everyday citizens via FISA. That a shared file = threat to national security. No courts, oversight, or proper recourse for the victims if things are not conducted properly.
The RIAA is floundering. They have no clue of how to survive in the 21st century. Haven't some of the big record labels already pulled of the RIAA?
it must be an April's fools day video.
@Saboth:
That was funny!
Does it look like they were being interviewed by the 700 club? i think George W. may be behind this. That is why everyone has a right to look at all your online activity; because somewhere right now CD rippers are planning the next attack on America which will make 911 look little by comparison.
seriously...do they actually BELIEVE what they're saying?
are they from some Bizarro world where piracy = gun violence crack addicts?
The height of paranoia... when the "enemy" is everyone around you.
Thanks, George, you've not just left a legacy, you've left a curse.
I'll take my CDs "with".
beware of anyone with a myspace page. that's what i've learned!
AHAHA!.. ok now for the SNL music to come in. .. Where's the MUSIC!? :S
I don't know how any remotely informed person can say this with a straight face.
Wow, where the FUCK do they get their information?
Has anyone they've sued been a drug dealer?
Too bad Consumerist isn't allowing the RIAA in this year's Worst Company in America competition... it's like they're trying to win.
RE: RIAA
/some other commenter a while back posted this link to a talk by Larry Lessig, the digital rights lawyer.
It's wonderful to think that there still are some intelligent people and ideas available in Amerika.
Worth a look... [www.ted.com]
I just downloaded NWA's "Fuck The Police" just to spite these assholes.
I make rocks, and I also sometimes download copywritten mp3s.
im pretty sure nobody sells pirated cds with crack included. big ol' WTF on this one.
@Nintenboy01: right there with you. Either that or a crack dealer. Or both. We must be both.
I love how you can tell on the black chick's face how she knows she is full of shit, the way she smirks while saying it and doesn't quite fully believe it herself. I should be a pro poker player or something.
gag
Well since I'm now in the same category as crack dealers and terrorists I have no real reason to not own a gun or start laundering fake money haha. Like come on seriously?
Come on RIAA, crack cocaine in a CD case is so last year. Everyone knows you buy crack in Kool Aid packets now.
After seeing this video, my daily download quota of albums will go up.
@Saboth: I actually think I saw McCain give this speech last night.
WTF I didn't get my free crack when i bought my pirated Chipmunks - Greatest Hits CD.
