The next iteration of the Nike+ line of running-enhancing gear just hit the FCC, and it looks like Nike went ahead and ditched Apple for this go around. This one is the Nike SportBand, a little device that fits into a bracelet. It communicates with the Nike+ doodad in your shoe and stores its data. You then plug the SportBand into your computer via USB to track your runs, cutting the iPod out of the loop entirely. As a sedentary blogger, I could care less about this, but perhaps you "healthy" and "active" people can get some kicks out of it. [FCC]

It plays music?
WOW, Thats a dick move on Nike's Part
Well at least they cut out the "weak link"...........goodbye (apple).
weren't they supposed to come out with a new version that plays music that matches the beat of your step? or one that would slow down the tempo of the song? or is this another one of those things that i wished for that never came to be? like hamburgers-in-a-can.
oh wait...
Its not really "cutting apple out." This device delivers all of the cool things about nike+ to the people who like to run without music. It's a decent idea for those who don't want to drop a few hundred on an unnecessary nano.
I'm pissed that I have to pay a higher price for sneakers that have the "+" at the end.
There are some models that only have "+" model but no regular model.
I'll only wear it if the bracelet is pink
Nike is a bit behind the trend here - Polar, Timex and Garmin all have versions that are vastly better and do a hell of alot more.
The DRM used on iTunes made the iPod unnecessary, not this thing.
@Solidsky: You do realize there are a ton of companies that make pouches that go into your laces that hold it to? Or, if you wanted, you could just cut out a bit of the sole of your shoe and put it in also.
Just wanted to comment on the use of "sedentary" in the article. Nice.
I used one of the pouches for about a year before I bought the shoes. The pouches work great.
@Samifumi and @Out2gtcha: You have got to be kidding me... Mind posting when you actually have half a braincell?
Given the unwieldy shape of the new nano (have you seen it in an armband? awful.) this makes a lot of sense.
Can't you check current status on the iPod itself, rather than waiting until you got home and plugged this into a computer?
I have not gotten my new nano (3G) to work with the Nike kit yet. My 1G and my wife's 2G work fine. The Nike+ kit was the ONLY reason for buying a nano now, as the nicer weather keeps teasing us, I'm getting more antsy about this thing not working.
I'm sure all six people that cared about this product pairing are devastated by this news.
@Falconfire: Seconded. Banhammer!
@novacthall: I guess your fat ass doesn't see the hundreds of thousands worldwide that compete daily on itunes to get into better shape.
Adam isn't "healthy" or "active"? You'd never know from all that galavanting around CES, or hanging with porn stars...
@arch05: I'm one of them. It's good for biking too, when you link it to an odometer.
@arch05: Agreed, those are two terrible posts.
@The Lab:
@arch05:
not really banworthy, guys... if this was a zune post, the tables would be turned and there would be many more incomprehensible bashings but hardly anyone to disagree with 'em. Granted those posts are poorly written, they're not even close to flame/spam/trolling...
"As a sedentary blogger, I could care less about this..."
You could care less? Really? Cause it sounds like you couldn't care less.
@Samifumi: Hold on a sec, let me call the WAAAAAAAmublance.
I can't believe people are still crying about this. If you don't like it, go buy the CD. The idea is to stop stealing music. As a musician, I side with them on the fact they deserve to get paid. Sure, the record labels SUCK, but you shouldn't hold that against the artist, who often has no choice but to be with a label.
A bracelet? Something dangling off my wrist isn't high on my list of things I want while running, I don't even wear a watch when I go..
I wish someone would just make a good jogging timer and Nike+ equivalent for my Zune.
@richard8a: The artist has a choice when they sign the damn contract. No one is being strong-armed here, except the end user. I know a few people that make their living through music, none embrace DRM or any kind. That being said, I do only buy CDs, mainly for archival reasons.
@Solidsky:
Lacelids are your friend... [www.lacelid.com]
Oh, it does make the iPod unnecessary, but it seems to be cutting out the best parts of the system: music/PowerSong, the voice feedback...
If I wanted Nike+ without the features that came from the iPod, I'd rather get a cheap pedometer.
All of todays crankiness can be attributed to the Fool Moon. Chill out people, no need to get nasty.
so lets see. my bracelet can talk to my shoes; my music player can talk to my car; my computer can talk to your computer; my hidden Giz persona can talk to other hidden Giz personae; etc etc etc
but my president cant talk at all. not even in his native language. how sad.
I really enjoy my Nike+/iPod Nano combination. I love the way it tracks my time and mileage.
I guess it doesn't matter that a great deal of people who bought the Nike+ accessory probably had a nano to begin with :p
@Falconfire:
You might be waiting a while. Im only at 1/4 a brain so far.........
My point was that you dont have to spend any money on a pointless device; cutting out the "middle-man", in this case apple.
The nano isn't really a middle man device. The Nike+ accessory is generally the add-on, not the real product that you have to buy an iPod to get to. It's an accessory people.
@Out2gtcha: I'm sure many who have this system on occasion use their nanos simply to listen to music, not just go running with.
Forgone conclusion.
@Kaiser-Machead:
Hmmmm. I guess I should have put "for this particular set up" first before typing anything else.
I guess my conclusion that people knew I was aware that ipods were used for things other than in conjunction with the Nike+ was not a forgone one.
healthy+active people... on my Gizmodo?
@Falconfire: And that took more than a half of a braincell to post? How about providing your position instead of an empty insult?
@richard8a: Buying the CD doesn't break the annoyances of DRM. The DRM has started to infringe on my right to hook up an Iphone/Ipod to the two different Mac computers I own. The one iPod, one computer characteristic of an iPod/iPhone have limited the uses for these devices. What's the purpose of buying successive devices if they are just becoming more and more crippled?
"I could care less..."
How much less could you care?
@Kaiser-Machead: Actually, I bought the system because it worked with the Nano I already had.
@Samifumi: 1 ipod, 1 PC? Strange. I have two iPods running on three PCs. You do realize you can authorize up to 5 computer systems, right?
@szrimaging: he also seems to think iPods are only capable of playing DRM'd music purchased from the iTunes music store for some reason. iPods existed well before the store did. the *many* people that don't use the store and never will and happen to own an iPod can load music from as many computers as they want.
if you are going to be spewing inane rhetoric it at least helps to have even the most basic of facts reviewed. but then idiocy and rhetoric generally go hand in hand.
@Solidsky: The shoes with the + don't cost extra. Take a look those models are the same price as they were before Nike+ came out.
