April 15 won't just be tax day, it'll be the day you can pick up the DualShock 3 (rumbling PS3 controller) in the US. The controller's already been available in Japan for months now, which means that if you're really keen on getting vibration before your buddies, you could import it from Asia and hook it up now. If that's too much work, $54.99 will get you one in April. [Kotaku]

For $55 it better rumble more than my hands.
Japenese import FTW!
Funny, when I had the dualshock2 the rumble was a bit overpowered.
Wow these accessories are getting more and more expensive every day .2 of those and i can almost get a new PS2
Am I the only gamer who Doesn't like the rumble feature? Just like the "six axis", So many games just don't know how to use it right and it ends up just annoying me. I usually turn it off anyway. Now, USB instead of proprietary connection is great.
took a company like sony this long to finally come up with a product that already exist in their product line. slackers.
Yeah...I'm not sure I miss it really.
@robinandtami: The PS3 version of Rez allows you to support up to 3 tranz vibrators. Maybe you should go that route.
Excellent!
@Xavoc:
Huh?
@kahri:
Hey.... does this controller rumble AND do six axis control? I thought Sony said that couldn't be done. Wasn't that the explanation they gave for not having rumble in the first place?
@kurtr: Sony was in a patent dispute over the DualShock name or device, I forget which. I think they just settled the lawsuit a few months back so now they can release the DualShock again.
@Xavoc: The 360 version does as well...
Good on them for finally getting rumble instead of the sixaxis gimmick, but that's a mighty expensive controller.
@robinandtami: Search for Rez HD (SFW), and then google Rez and Game girl advance (NSFW perhaps)
@robinandtami: Rez HD is a game that uses vibration as part of the gameplay.
They didn't initially have rumble because of a lawsuit by Immersion (I think) who owns the patents to it. And they wouldn't be able to put sixaxis and rumble together because the rumble would make sixaxis think that the controller is being moved around.
I see USB port. I am sold.
PS3 controller is the reason I don't want a PS3. Games that attempt to use the six axis are generally reported to fail to pull it off properly.
It's equivalent to the original huge Xbox controller = Achilles heal
$30 or $40 maybe. $55... no. Hopefully a cheaper Logitech version will quickly follow.
@Denver_80203:
you can turn it off(sixaxis), the only game that I THINK uses it permanently is Lair which I havent played. That being said, I wish there was a mod to put the PS3 controller contents into the xbox360 controller. I love my PS3 but I love how the xbox360 controller feels.
When did controllers become as expensive as the games themselves? I miss the NES $20-30 for a game days.
WOW
I imported two of these suckers about six weeks ago, and didn't pay much more than this listed price after trading in my Sixaxis, and it makes all the difference in my system.
Game's like Uncharted take on a whole new flavor because the rumble is really distinct for each of the weapons in the game.
It also performs Six Axis as well.
Every one of my game's including Launch games all rumble now and it is soooo worth it.
@xtremesniper: I don't see rumble messing up the sixaxis because the Wiimote has both rumble and motion controls.
@aaj111 & kahri
You two do realize the current PS3 controller (SIXAXIS) uses a mini-USB connector as well, right?
When will it come to europe?
@fallenturtle: True, forgot about that.
@DashTheHand:
When the PS2 had a $35 controller.
@xtremesniper:
They were in a lawsuit with Immersion (who settled with Microsoft and Nintendo, and Sony chose to fight it out and thus is late to the party).
Thing about all of this is that a lot of people are pissed at Sony for all the "last gen" posturing they did publicly about rumble, failing to realize that this was during the settlement negotiations with Immersion... which was also going on while they were producing prototype DualShock 3's (if you need proof, the fact that Resistance and other launch titles have DS3 support). The reason for the posturing? Because if you're in negotiations, one of the things you don't do is say "Oh my god how we need what you have!" publicly and lose all ability to negotiate. Should they have settled when Microsoft and Nintendo did? Absolutely.
But all this bitching about price... c'mon. We're talking about $5 difference for a feature that people have bitched about not being available.
Realistically, if you'll recall, the DualShock 2 was $5 cheaper than a new release game... now you get a controller that's in the same controller:game price ratio... with wireless... with motion control... with more advanced rumble features...
Yeah, we're all getting royally screwed.
I was always fine with it's old port the mini-usb to usb. I've got loads of those cables so i'm happy with it. Can't wait till it comes to europe regions though :D
only thing rumbling is my wallet
zing
Unless this rumbles during the massive explosions in my Blu-ray movies, it would just be another crappy PS3 controller that sits on the shelf while I play 360.
Given that for 55 bucks you get a Bluetooth enabled controller with vibration, SIXAXIS, a rechargeable battery and a USB 2.0 wire to charge it with for 55 bucks, its cheaper than the competition.
360 wireless controller: $49.99 (no rechargeable battery, no cable)
360 play and charge kit: $19.99
@daftrok: Xbox is really good at hiding true costs by breaking it down to make people buy separate parts.
The PS3 controller is also much lighter in terms of weight. When I picked up my friend's 360 controller I thought rocks were strapped to it...
@aaj111: The PS3 controllers have always had a USB connection.
$55?? No thanks. I didn't miss the rumble feature that much...
What will this do to battery life? I'd take time untethered over rumble any day.
yeaa $55 for a rumbling controller what next a blu ray disc that talks for $100 !!NO Thanks!!Should of just kept the rumbling feature to yourself.
Sad part is that I need to pay for this upgrade just to get controllers that don't lose connection every few hours :(
@HiPnOtEk:
Proving my point.
Sony: We're not going to have rumble.
People: Boo, you fuckin' losers, rumble rules! Fuck you and your non-rumbling, motion-sensitive controller!
Sony: OK, here comes your rumble, it's going to cost you $5 dollars more than the one without rumble, and it'll still have all the features of the original SIXAXIS.
People: Boo, you fuckin' losers, rumble's not worth what I usually spend on a cheap lunch!
@berribrand:
I prefer having more weight to my controller, I love the 360 controllers, they are the best controller i've ever used, no questions asked.
