N-Gage Boss on PSP Phone: "We're Not Scared." Uh, Really?

jaakko_kaidesoja-2.jpgWhen asked whether or not he viewed the upcoming PSP phone as a threat to the N-Gage, Nokia games head honcho Jaakko Kaidesoja responded thusly:

"I'm not scared about anybody. The real question is how do they [Sony Ericsson] do it? Can they create a link between the PSP games and a phone? Can they do the multiplayer and online stuff? We've been doing this for two years and it hasn't been easy."
Is that the real question, or is it whether or not Nokia can do anything right and finally get a gaming platform off the ground? [Pocket Gamer]

  • Do NOT get into this guy's van.

Not sure I'd buy anything from him either. Where's his other hand, gripping his n-gage?

  • I guess he has nothing to fear as he has nothing to lose. Nokia has no mobile gaming business that anyone could compete against.

  • wait..the N-Gage??? the Mr.Potato Head's EAR phone??? man...

  • N-GAGE = piece of trash ...

  • I LOVE my PSP and if I could use it for music and phone as well as gaming, internet and video. Wait a minute... I CAN.

It's the TRUE second coming. Long live PSP.

    side talkin'

  • @SchruteBuck:
    GIGGITY!

  • I was sure that PSP is was updatable and had games already able to be played online via WIFI. So to answer Nokia: very very easily. I actually need to buy a normal PSP first, and if only for Patapon.

  • Yep...SONY has NO experience with multiplayer or online 'stuff'.

/goes back to 16 player online SOCOM match on PSP

  • Jaakko Kaidesoja's head looks like a 55 gallon oil drum. It's so.... cylindrical.

  • Hey wasnt Metal Gear Solid Mobile running on a SONY phone and that was looking great.

    also
"We've been doing this for two years and it hasn't been easy."

    more like

"We've been doing this for two years and got NOWHERE."

    That's funny.

  • Here's to hoping for groundbreaking announcements on the 29 of February!

    /my ass...

  • Wow that is a big ass head, like comic book villain style big ass head. Even without the hairline it's still humongous gigantic big for a human head. Grossly out of proportion with his face head even. Is N-Gage run by aliens because I think this guy might be one in human skin suit.

  • @ IUSEAMACSOSUEME: "mister.. you want some help gettin that couch into your van?" .. "Would ja?" BAM "It puts the lotion on it's skin or else it gets the hose again"

You know, the problem with this guy might be that he ISN'T afraid. I wouldn't waste my precious time playing an N-Gage if he gave me one for free. N-Gage is that thing that was attached to the counter at EB Games that nobody ever looked at, right? The last thing I had from nokia was a cell phone as big as my foot. Come to think of it, my foot got a better signal.

  • I would question whether or not Sony chooses to use the UMD. That would make for one heck of a bulky phone.

  • I would loveee a psp phone, my razr is pretty outdated and i love my psp. I got patapon today and preordered god of war. I doubt the psp phone would use umd unless sony moved from marijuana to hard core crack cocaine.

  • Is his brain trying to escape?

  • @IUSEAMACSOSUEME: This guy looks legit.

  • any rep saying negative stuff about other companies will always end up sounding like a tool, and when you get a photo to go along with it, they look like a tool as well.

just bring us the hot phones, N-Gage is an interesting business model, please continue if it makes a profit.

@kahri: No, but it looks like his hair is.

Now that we're done poking fun at this guy, I wish him luck, a phone that could play good games benefits us all.

  • he's not scared because he isn't expecting anything better than failure to begin with.

  • hmmmm... like the number 1 gaming device shipper in the world isn't nokia already.. also the number one music device manufacturer.. and camera manufacturer as well naturally...

  • He's actually got some valid points but the success of Nokia's N-Gage will rely on how many handsets they can support. Opening up the platform to S60 3rd Ed phones will increase the global outreach of the Nokia gaming platform.

If Sony tries to get in, the better. Competition means consumers win!

  • lets hope mobile gaming works out better for this guy than his six months supply of rogaine. :0 (

  • Guys the one advantage the N-Gage would have is that it would allow you to play online via 3G as well as Wifi. Whereas the PSP uses Wifi only.

At the same time, playing online via 3G would probably suck a lot of bytes off your data plan.

So that probably doesn't make it an advantage :s

(slowly starts to leave the room)

  • @Hamood:
all you can eat data is $19.99 a month, 3g would most likely be fine for gaming, and Sony HAS experience with online gaming in general so moving from wifi to WWAN would be an easy transition. Nokia was talking about Sony making a PSP phone. which would be nice but i would prefer just a psp 2000 at this point.

  • Come on! You can get flat rate 3G data for 10 euros now in Europe. Phrases like "data plan" or "expensive mobile Internet" are a thing of the past!

  • N-Gage?? what the hell is n-gage?? i can remember a long time ago a funny mobile phone in combination with games that was so bad and to expensive a just baaad. Those this still exist in the USA??

  • I think that since Nokia have 40% of the global phone market they're probably doing something right.

  • "Can they do the multiplayer and online stuff? We've been doing this for two years and it hasn't been easy.""

    Dear Jaakko,
It's very difficult to do multiplayer when you don't even have two people who own your phones...

    Sincerely,
    Thrifty Techie

  • Not scared in the same way that an insect isn't scared of a kid about to step on it. It's too small and insignificant to even register the larger, dangerous being's existence.

  • @Sleeper_Service: maybe so, but it damn sure isn't due to the gaming services...

  • Very true. I have the Ngage demo on the N95 though and it looks pretty good, mind.

Of course this means eff all if they don't get good developers on board.

  • i love how almost everyone had something to actually say, rather than just make fun of the guy based on looks
    /sarcasm
i doubt too many of you are potential underwear models yourselves.

While even i would agree that the guy does look a bit unsuual, hes also is in charge of an important and relatively well known product at a major company. i wouldnt mind trading in a little bit of my "good looks" for success.

off of appearance however and back onto topic, i have not been so happy with my psp. the games arnt so great, if i want to play multiplayer i have to find someone with a psp and with that game (who wants to play!) If i want to do anything neat with it in terms of software i'll potentially brick my psp and be left with a 250 dollar paperweight. the psp is one of the top selling game systems in the world...but the last recount (to my memory) said that the psp was behind all other major gaming systems.

the reason i am pointing out the psp's flaws is because even sony has been known to make a mistake or two. this phone could wind up sucking pretty badly. If they arnt careful and remember past mistakes, they could wind up making some bad move that nokia or even they themselves made at some point.

i bought the psp on one of the first day it came out. big mistake. If the psp phone winds up unbelievably good because sony does some new innovative thing...then i'll get one. until then, i think i will sit back, watch the early adaptors pick one up, and see how things work out for them.

  • Palm's CEO Ed Colligan on the iPhone before launch:

"We've learned and struggled for a few years here figuring out how to make a decent phone,'' he said. "PC guys are not going to just figure this out. They're not going to just walk in.''

Jaakko Kaidesoja on the PSP phone before launch:

"The real question is how do they [Sony Ericsson] do it? Can they create a link between the PSP games and a phone? Can they do the multiplayer and online stuff? We've been doing this for two years and it hasn't been easy."

  • @Solidsky:
    @matto:
I wish people would stop dissing the friggen old N-Gage get over it it's already like from 2002 it's sad. Did you even own one? Hold one do anything? No you didn't you listened to friggen press releases that stated oh blah blah it doesn't matter how good the games are (which they were) it's shaped like a taco therefore we don't like it! WTF I mean come on. How often do we give up looks to have good technology like everyday! I mean sure it was nothing in gaming comapred to the PSP and DS but the phone had A LOT more value than everyone granted it. Now I wish you people would get it INTO your heads that this isn't a friggen phone it's a software. Also in my opinion I find it funny that most of you would instult a phone for it's looks when I bet you haven't looked in the mirror and been satified with what you see since you were born, believe me no one was...

Last I checked nokia had over 40% market share and the N-Series was doing amazingly well. Oh guess what the N-Gage software is avaialable on what oh yeah the N-Series! Seriously the installbase is there and the early adopters are already there and the reviews are already there! This has the potential to be something great and I KNOW that loads of you that shunt it off now will claim that you were there from the begging supporting it or some crap! Bull ish! Please if you don't like it don't buy it but if you have a N-Gage compatible device you have absolutely nothing to lose the games demo's are free and you can even rent them should you think it a waste to buy. Also guess what the games are available as software therefore no boxes no shipping fee's no regions just gaming!

If you read up you would know Nokia have NOT made a mistake going into this. They have everything planned, marketing, value for money and big gaming companies EA ect. Not to mention the much hyped Project Rock which will be innovative!

@GFX-187: NOWHERE hahaha! My god sure if you say so...

@geekinky: The only reason you could possible have a cellphone as big as your foot is because you brought a cellphone that actually has something worth it. Duh they make small phones to. I'm happily using my Nokia 6500 Classic now with it's 1gb onboard memory and sleek looks, oh look at that it fits in my pocket oh it fits almost everywhere because it's SMALL!

@Serb: Bad? WTF you mean bad, I agree the games were expensive but bad... They definately weren't bad. All you need to do is go look on Gamespot and you'll see quite a few got good reviews.

@ThriftyTechie: Two people that own your phones... If your making a stab at the only N-Gage great going you used a joke that had stopped being funny ages ago, actually it's incorrect if you look at sales figures the old N-Gage didn't do terrible at all, it infact did very well for a PHONE. If you were making a joke of there current phones, don't be a idiot, currently the phones that support the N-Gage software is the N95 all versions, N93, N73, N96 (N95 Successor with 16gb onboard memory and HCSD exapandabilty {sure to sell excellently}) ect. ect. ect. If you think about it that's aleady a install base EASILY over 30 million. It's not hard for them to get the application all they need do is go to the website.

@Moonshadow101: WTF are you talking about. If Sony Erricson only bring out a PSP Phone as in it's a hardware and not a software, no matter HOW MUCH it sells it won't be a scratch on the N-Gage's surface. Big bug my ass! Tell you what N-Gage is gonna drop kick the child that tries to stomp it to heaven or hell (it deserves it killing a helpless bug)

Thanks for your time I enjoyed ranting, really I did!

  • lol all that just to counter "ngage sucks" ? lol ngage sucks

  • Yup I know I went a little overboard. But hey I'm passionate about it haha :P

  • @DJTripleRRR:
Ok, so I wasn't funny, so let's be serious. I live in the NYC metro area. Out of all my friends, co-workers, etc. I know of only one person who owns a Nokia phone. And that one was one of the freebie, low-end models. I know zero people using N-Gage.

And before you make fun of me for making fun of me for knowing only 3 people, I observe hundreds of people/wk on the subway during my commute and I haven't seen any fancy Nokia phones... Blackberries, Motorolas, Samsungs, SonyEricson, Palms, LGs, Sidekicks, and iPhones abound. No Nokias. I swear that Nokia market share in NYC is less than 5%.

  • @DJTripleRRR:
Give you props for being a Nokia fanboy, though. Impressive and unique.

  • @ThriftyTechie: Haha I forgive you. Yeah I don't know I live in my own small world so I guess I just thought Nokia ruled everywhere else to haha. Here In South Africa we generally have a very big mobile phone business. Like on average I'd say that everyone gets a new phone every two years... But usually 1 a year. They're seen as publicity icons here. OMG it's so scary when you see a child of like 10 with a phone like the N95 or the E90 just because it's cool or something. Personally I get phones for the functions.

And thankyou. Yup I'm a Nokia fanboy. Have NO idea why but yeah it just feels like they make phones for me. I had the original N-Gage and when I finally got rid of it what happens the N-Series gets announced lol. Had the N91 it died lol. And now I have the 6500 Classic (not much on functions but I chose it otherwise I would have never got a new phone) but I'm saving up for the N96 when it comes out :)
