The one technical advantage Blu-ray held over HD DVD is that Blu-ray discs hold more stuff, 50GB on a dual-layer disc. But that's still not enough for Metal Gear Solid 4 in all its glory, according to creator Hideo Kojima:
Kojima: For us, we're not still not satisfied with the quality we can do. You know, there's not capacity space.Just how does one cut and compress pure badassness? And the race to develop a new super-duper HD format begins...now. [Hatimaki via (and translated by) Kotaku]Interviewer: Wait, wait a sec. Saying there's not enough capacity, are you talking about Blu-ray?
Kojima: That's correct. There's not enough space at all. [Laughs] ...There's not enough space. We always talked about where to cut and what to compress.

Seems that the whole wasteful design concept that the Japanese engineers went on about regarding the Macbook Air doesn't seem to filter down to their game developers.
wow. Now Im really hyped about this game. Its going to be amazing.
@imTheKing: Agreed and this is just a little more than a yr after PS3 launch.
Good lord. If they don't have the space on a Blu-Ray, my guess is that it means yet another MG title over-bloated with cinematic cutscenes that make up most of the "gameplay." That's why I haven't enjoyed a MG title since the original.
So what they are saying is, "if you will build it, we will fill it." And then some.
Me thinks they need to learn about video compression.
This is why the Metal Gear series is the greatest ever. They are pushing everything as far as it can possible be pushed. I remember when MGS2 came out. That was the most incredible thing that I had ever seen on the PS2. Now this might actually be enough to force me out to buy a PS3. I would definitively need an HDTV first, though, but other than that, there's nothing to really stop me. I just hope they don't let it die with this one; it should definitely continue for as long as the storylines can take it.
There has to be some compression issue going on here. Or rather a lack of compression...
@Milstar: Yea this is totally going to be awesome. This is easily my most anticipated game from my all time favorite series of games. Now to get a PS3...come on May!
@weatherman: Bingo.
They could use the newly developed Hitachi 100 GB Blu ray drive that is compatible with dual layer BD players like the PS3.
@BMErdin:
Compression = Quality loss
@imTheKing: It's not going to be amazing; it's going to be hours upon hours of high-def FMV. How else are they going to fill a Blu-Ray, in an age where most games fit on one DVD?
seriously, just too many cutscenes.
Behold the power of perfection.
Snaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaake!
This gives me a bad feeling. IF all the textures are uncompressed, IF all the audio is uncompressed, and IF the gameplay hits 40+ hours I can understand filling the disc. I figure it's mostly uncompressed video, and that leaves little room for, oh, I dunno, A GAME!
Of course, Kojima could photograph wang-shaped cookies, title it "Metal Gear 4 Plus Alpha Sneak Peek", and sell it to MG fanboys for a handsome profit.
@pete_at_brandeis: Do you really believe this? Did you play it on the Xbox? (Part of the series, you know.)
you don't need an AO pass on BLACK FRAMES!
50Gb no room....straight up bullshit...he is just trying to hype his game.
My dad always said "the goods expand to fill the space availible" - I think he was talking about my mom packing the car for a trip...
@daftrok: Depending on the type of compression. I would imagine these guys are holding on to uncompressed for dear life.
Re: Video compression... what type of stsems do they expect the game to run on if it's exceeding 50 GB's who the fuck are they making for?
It's not really that cool, that they're exceeding current format standards, it just means they're slowing development by not finding an adequate solution.
what about multiple discs? its not like it hasn't been done before
@Canoehead:
Just stop typing.
when this game is released...i will buy a PS3...i dont care what size...the first one i see. I will buy it just to play this game...then probably will mainly use it for the blueray...maybe some nba live
Just a statement to get people talking about a game.
@daftrok: lossy compression = quality loss (though the perceptible quality may be zilch if the bitrate is high enough)
@weatherman:
Thank you. I couldn't stand the fact that I would play for 2 minutes only to watch a 10 minute cut-scene and another 2 minutes to watch another big-ass cutscene. This is what they call "gameplay"? It's pretty pathetic if you ask me. If I wanted a movie, I'd buy a F'n movie.
Sounds fishy. BD is pretty big, and should hold pretty much anything they throw at it. However, we can't know just yet. Maybe Kojema is about to pull a truly "industry first" and release the first +200 hour action adventure game. That'd be fricken amazing and would peak my interest, whatever my origional thoughts on the MGS series were. Personally, I've often thought the series contained too much drama, but that may be a Japan/American cultural thing. And the cutscenes mentioned earlier were annoying to me too. But the games were always entertaining.
Yeah but... I thought MGS cutscenes were real-time, thus not requiring masses of space for HD FMVs?
I can only assume they are doing it like Uncharted - rendering the cutscenes in-engine, but having them in video form in order to improve load times...
Which is LAME.
@Canoehead:
he may have been talking about packing, and he may have been talking about your mom, but when he said that i do not think he was refering to a road trip...
Good grief, some people are never happy.
When I read this I couldn't believe it either, but apparently this interview is really old, and that Kojima was referring to the 25gb single layer BD, and not the 50gb dual layer BD. I think it was said in a Famitsu issue last year. So I don't think that storage for MGS4 isn't a problem anymore. But then again I don't have any sources so..........take it how you want it.
@youngjjohnson: NBA live is good, but really choppy in some parts (like after replays), kinda takes away from the streamlinedness of gameplay.
mmmm... Crysis needs just one dvd...
Guess they'll have to cut out the subplot where Snake time travels and becomes his own father, then raises his greatgrandson to become Gaseous Snake. Too bad, because the cut scenes for that plot alone would probably be worthy of a few Oscars for scriptwriting and acting.

The MG gameplay template in under 20 words:
Play for 5 minutes, watch 10 minutes of video. Play for 2 minutes, watch 10 minutes of video. Repeat.
I enjoyed the actual gameplay of the MG series, but taken as a whole, the games make me want to throw my controller through a wall. Every cut scene left me wondering "how long before I get to play again?"
@youngjjohnson:
@P3nnst8r:
I've found those responsible for the NBA games. I repeat, I've found them.
@nutbastard:
Nutbastard, normally your comments are childish and irrelevant, but now you're insulting people's Moms?
Grow up!
MGS4 will be 6-7 hours long, mark my words. The games are always really short with about 10+ hours of cut scenes mixed in. I have no idea why people actually like Metal Gear Solid. Not only are the cut scenes annoying and oh so long, but the story is unbelievably terrible. I had a slight hope this game would be different when I heard it was adopting some modern game design philosophy, but that was all shattered when I heard "Call me momma... Big Momma". I just need to say that one line to any Metal Gear fan to destroy their entire argument for why MGS4 will be good. It's like playing a game of rock paper shotgun. I can't lose.
I'd be perfectly fine with multiple discs. I'm guess the statements gives the appearance of "OMG, best game evar!", but if it's the least bit disappointing, the can say "Well, we had to cut stuff out...". Make multiple discs if you're that concerned. Jerks.
Wait? Is this guy going to use FMV? What the hell? Whatever happened to using in-game engine cinematics? You mean to say *GASP* the PS3 can't handle it? Can't handle the graphics? Can't handle the 4:1 lossless texture compression? Are we looking at Dragon's Lair type gameplay? Will someone please toss this guy a 12" platter?
If he gets rid of the source code, maybe he'll end up with a 6GB game disc.
"The one technical advantage Blu-ray held over HD DVD"
you guys are SO bitter. don't look back in anger.
Heh, when it comes out I'm betting it will be just like all the other ps3 games; with the same (and sometimes less) graphical quality than x360, while "utilizing" all that b-ray space. Perhaps they need to learn about compression? I'm not trying to be a fanboy, but this is what I've seen up till now... Just sayin s'all
Oh what...a....surprise...More Sony BS hype. Yawn. I'm sure it will be a let down just like the PS3 and PSP. Sony used to awesome, now Sony sucks. I haven't bought a Sony product in 2 years and not planning on it again.
@nutbastard: Thats the funniest post I've seen in a while! My thoughts exactly!
Back to the discussion though, I can only really think of two games or studios that would fill up a Blu Ray disc. Konami with MGS4 and Squaresoft with Final Fantasy. And they will be filled with High Def FMV and cut scenes like they ALWAYS have been. Disc capacity has nothing to do with game play length or graphics.
@graham1010:
Dude you need more coffee - RTFC before jumping to conclusions! No ones mom was dissed!
"My dad always said "the goods expand to fill the space availible" - I think he was talking about my mom packing the car for a trip..."
c'mon!
"My dad always said "the goods expand to fill the space availible""
that's just fuckin' begging for it!
Hmm, I though creating a game and making it fit on the format that is given to all developers was part of the challenge. They're stupid to complain now that there is not enough space on BluRay to make their game better quality, every developer can say that, but magic is to make it fit and still be good compared to other games.
Kojima, stop coming with excuses and just release this damn thing, if its crap it's because you made it crap, not because you didn't have enough space on the disc.
maybe they want to trick non-technical people to think, oh it doesnt fit on a blu-ray, it must be a game that lasts forever when in reality 50% is uncompressed static noise for the radios in the game
never got into these games, this new one the AI looks terrible dont know if they have fixed it also the characters joint movements are kinda robotic
Why is it when Microsoft puts out newer software with ever larger footprints the community screams about bloat, but when Sony puts out a humongous game tipping the scales in excess of a Blu-ray platter there is nary a cry from anyone? Double standard much?
Any excitement I had left for this game is toast. This is going to be MGS2 all over again, ridiculous amounts of FMV and very little actual gameplay. I'm sure what's there will be top-notch, but I'd like to play a game, not watch a convoluted anime soap opera.
Pure PR BS!
@Bender: ...just hit that little plus sign next to my comment and you'll get 100% weatherman 24/7! ;)
Please, not another format war.
Wasn't there some work done on a triple-layered Blu-ray disk ?
Solution: Installation. It worked for DMC4 and would save space on the disc for commonly used resources. Imagine, compressing 5GB into 1GB then when installed, you'll do wonders. Of course, you can just add an extra DVD to install this stuff instead of a Blu-Ray Disc just for additional resources.
OH OH PICK MY IDEA!!!
load it all onto a hard drive and play from there!!!
meh...it was worth a try...
@Citizen Kang: You're going compare an OS to a game? Seriously?
From what I have read, they were duplicating the texture files on different parts of the disc since they were having problems with disc read speed. If they really knew what they were doing, then 50GB would be more than enough.
