Sony Computer Entertainment UK Boss Ray Maguire just let this bit slip about a future firmware update, which Sony usually doesn't comment on.
Our momentum will continue with the introduction of in-game communication in the summer, firmware update 2.4 and the strongest line-up of games through our third party partners and our own studios. I'd personally like to thank our trade and business partners for helping us on the start of the PS3 journey.
So, there's going to be improved in-game chat (maybe expanded to every game via an in-game Xross Media Bar?) that's even better than the chat we've already used now? Sign us up. [MCVUK via Kotaku]

Can anybody tell me what games are currently supported with voice chat other than Warhawk? I'm just curious, not being an asshole or anything.
And news on possibility of when the next firmware update will drop?
Isn't this tech a little late. Get with it, Sony.
Seriously. Universal in game chat is a MUCH needed feature.
@P3nnst8r: @SinAmos:
Call of Duty 4 is another game that comes to mind. As with other vendors the chat feature is a game specific bonus. Possibly having this expanded to 'every' game is the difference.
You know what I need? Jerk-off kids yelling at me in EVERY game I own.
@P3nnst8r: I know CoD4 has voice chat. Not an exclusive or anything, but still applicable.
Call of Duty 4 - Chat Supported
Tekken 5 DR - Chat Supported
Warhawk - Chat Supported
Team Fortress 2 - Chat Supported
Unreal III - Chat Supported
Resistence Fall of Man - Chat Supported
Dude, the list goes on....basically any first person shooter with online play has it...
@aldenf82: There is nothing stopping game developers from having a mute feature.
@aldenf82:
or playing some loud boisterous music in the background the whole time!!!!
I would love to have Skype on PS3, that way you could be on the phone with a bluetooth headset while playing games.
@P3nnst8r:
Burnout Paradise has voice chat as well.
Maybe this means that Sony will start to require developers to use the feature? Since there are quite a few games using it already, but not all of them. 'Cause the way the qute reads, it sounds like firmware 2.4 and voice chat are seperate things.
@metalhaze: Thank u! I didn't know Resistance has it, and i own that game, lol.
Now they need to put my PS Eye to better use, when is this and this coming out?
@P3nnst8r: Well the first link that you posted is not a game. It's a tech demo for face recognition that they are probably going to use as PART OF a game.
The second video is also internal tech demos and ARE NOT specific games that are being developed. BUT THEY COULD BE! I am sure some aspects of the second video will find their way into a new PSEye game.
But for right now, those are just videos to show off the power of the PSEye and they are not necessarily games that are going to be coming out to the public.
@metalhaze: Bullocks.
@daftrok: Not sure if you heard this or not but they have Skype for the PSP. And yes it is very official! Not some hack or something. I think you can get it right now in Japan. Not sure if it's made it's way to the US yet.
@metalhaze: Here is the link announcing Skype for PSP:

@metalhaze: I hate that i can't use my old PSP for that. Sigh.
@P3nnst8r: MotorStorm comes to mind also
The fact that this is even an issue shows how immature PlayStation Network really is.
i had no idea the PS3 didn't do this. on the other hand, listening to boys who still sound like little girls calling each other faggots and ni*cough*ers in CoD4 gets old really, really fast.
my buddy made some little shit cry over xbox live the other day - i wasn't there but apparently it was priceless.
You mean every online game doesn't have voice chaton the PS3? WEAK! That's even worse than the fact that you have to leave the game and go back to the dashboard to send a game invite.
I'm gonna have to chime in on the "Who wants to hear all those kids screaming at each other?" side here...
Wow! In Game Chat! That's almost as cool as Xbox Live's 3+ year old Chat function which lets you chat with a friend regardless of if your gaming, or watching a movie, or anything! The PS3 is really an amazing machine, I'm so jealous....oh wait, no I'm not.
Get an XBOX 360?....jeez.
I'm a new 'next generation' console owner, I went with the PS3, mainly because of the built in blue ray player, built in wireless, built in bluetooth, and built in power supply (no power brick), all for $369 at target ($399 + free $40 target gift card). I bought Warhawks for $40 that came with a free bluetooth headset! I use it for maybe 10 minutes before I decided to turn it off...too many kids yakin. Hopefully the chat sytem will mature to Xbox levels soon, and i'd also like to use skype from the ps3.
There is a teamchat in the CoD4 but its anoing and you cant turn it of only if you turn on your headset why cant they manage to make it turn it off over the PS3 or to chose anoing talkers and turn them by the nick off?
And the quality of the sound is sooo bad
I think y'all are missing the point. PS3 games have had the ability to have in-game-chat since day one. It has been the game developers decision if and how to set it up.
This sounds like something different. If what I assume is correct; this is communication out side of a the games server. I.E. directly from PS3 user to PS3 user, So you can do cross game texting and chatting. That would mean that the only "whiny little kids" you hear are the ones who you let on your friends list and agree to chat with.
ok thats 2.4, we are at 2.1 right now? does that mean we will have 2 updates before summer and one during...this sounds like maybe one will be the Home open Beta...one the Home full release and then the in game XMB...I am stoked.
The problem we have is we can't turn the chat off without turning all audio off (can this be done now?). We usually turn the audio off on COD4, so we don't have to listen to the aformentioned juveniles, who love to display their 4 letter vocabularies. What is needed is to be able to disable chat only, or better yet disable chat on an individual basis (as mentioned above).
ok, btw a downloadable patch for COD4 will be coming out with an ingame mute feature to stop all the annoying kids. and the quote said an "introduction to in game communication." not in game chat. in game chat already exists. so hopefully this will be similar to the 360 menu features like text messeging, and private chat. hopefully both consoles will come out with a party chat feature.
@Seiven:
I think there has been internal FW updates one which was leaked only a week or so ago I believe. I wouldn't be surprised if it goes directly to V2.4
