Asus has confirmed the Eee PC 900, which features a larger 8.9-inch screen with 1024x600 resolution, 1GB RAM and up to 12GB storage. Other than this, and a larger touchpad, it looks almost the same as the original. [DailyTech]

They tried so hard with the apple-esque reflection, but the font = epic fail.
Cool! Now we wait for it to become stateside.
LOL. You couldn't reference Engadget directly so you referenced DailyTech who got their information from Engadget.
looks pretty sweet. will the 7" model be reduced to $199 now?
Price?
@blommer:
I've seen them reference Engadget numerous times..
who cares where the story came from..news is news.
Is the 900 in its name to denote the processor speed?
@workingonyourinvoice:
I think a number of Asian PC makers suffer from ESF: English as a Second Font syndrome.
it's awesome that by looking at the keyboard you can see it's not attached properly. there's clearly more space on the left than on the right haha.
marketing at its best.
cheap = good, but can I run TF2??
Hope this isn't more than $400...$500 might be pushing it for me.
@DogInYellowCoat:
nope, just that the shading on the bevel on the right side blends with the background - the keyboard IS centered...
much better than a regular eee for sure - that old resolution was the killer for i think 90% of the people who've expressed any sort of opinion of the eee.
I'm in for one... I'm reloading an old 11.5 inch Compaq Armada right now. I'd love the SSD and faster processor.
Good luck with that one.
man that is nice. I can't way to get one of these.
They never gave a US price, though, and Europe always seems to pay a premium for electronics (as well as an insane delay in release when it comes to video games).
"Asus Eee PC 900 12G" is a fuckin mouthful. 10 syllables, really? Gotta give apple props for their minimalist naming conventions. 2-3 Syllables max.
MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac Mini, iPod, iPhone, iPod Touch, Mac Pro, iMac... none of this
Asus Super Eee PC 9 Thousand X 12G
Sony's the worst though.
PFR-V1

STR-DG920
MDR-AS100W
NWZ-A720, NWZ-A820 and NWZ-A820K
Like they just throw 2 or three darts at a standard dart board while someone else mashes their forehead into a keyboard...
@Reilaos, Man of Destiny:
yeah but if you delay release, it feels better when you finally get to blow your wad (of cash, on electronics, of course!)
"OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG" -Homer J.S.
@nutbastard:
yeah, the one I hate most is me-mo-ry-stick-pro-duo
had do clap that one out a few times before I typed it
shit, it should be du-o not duo
im completely ruined from having one of these now, though, been rocking ubuntu at 1920 X 1280 on the hand me down inspiron, everything below that just looks janky now.
"I see your monitor is incapable of displaying 2 full webpages side by side. You should create another virtual desktop and - what? What is this "XP" and why can you not have multiple virtual desktops? Hmmm. ok well, try this: open the terminal and type sudo apt-get install -- NO TERMINAL? whhhhhhat? hoooooo-whhhhhat?!"
@discounteggroll:
on my shit list:
"core 2 duo"
"toureg"
"marlboro" (mar'el'bow'row)
Is that resolution confirmed?
If so, and it isn't expensive, I might have to sell my current EeePC 4G. The resolution is the only thing holding it back.
@workingonyourinvoice: I honestly have no idea what you are talking about...
This is what the EEE was meant to bEEE.
Gotta give props to the marketing division for not pretending like their space bar doesn't careen cheaply into the air at an angle like that LOL!
@nutbastard: My proposed replacement names:
Duplex 64
Rockfucker
Baccosticks.
@mwalker05: I can live with that.
@Kaiser-Machead: haha! Good one. Any replacement names for the asus eee pc 900 12g?
(Is it Ay-sus? or Ah-sus?)
@ripfire4: I suggest "XS LidNipples"
@workingonyourinvoice: You know, I didn't even notice that until you mentioned it. Haha!
for those rejecting the eee b/c of resolution/screen size issues:
you might want to just get an external monitor. they're dirt cheap now (I recently bought 3 HP's at staples for $40 ea.), and it's a great setup. Nice big monitor at your primary place of work, and an ultraportable when you're on the go. I had that setup going while I was toying around with the 1st gen eee I got. The external VGA supports up to 1600x1280 btw
@ripfire4: Fruitfucker. [www.pennyarcademerch.com]
@Kaiser-Machead:
nice.
@ripfire4: I think there was a post somewhere where an Asus rep said it was pronounced Ah-soos (rhymes with masseuse).
looks like the new screen fits in the outline of the original where the speakers are
wonder where the speakers went?
i'll bet there is a 8.9 mod within 2 weeks of the new model's release for the rest of us
Shozbot. I want the full 10 inches!
@whootowl:
even if it makes you walk funny tomorrow?
most like it'll use the Intel Celery processor ... no chance using the newer more expensive Atom processor. Also, this may phase out the older 1st gen EEE. so perhaps, it will take a slight premium to the 8G but will eventually replace it, hopefully dropping to the $499 price level.
I don't get it... at this size and this price, isn't this just a normal laptop now? What else am i missing that would set this apart?
@greasypigstudios:
9" (or rather 8.9") is about 3 inches smaller than anything else in the price range. this thing is not much bigger than a DVD case.
Now we're talking. At that resolution this is like my workhorse laptop from 2002, only a third of the size and weight, with three times the battery life. Right up my alley, really. I can see me throwing it in when I'd have second thoughts about my "portable desktop" 15-incher.
as someone who owns a 7.5 lb 16-point-something inch laptop, i can tell you that a 3 lb 8.9" is very, very small.
@nutbastard: Good point on the naming thing, but also remember that Sony make thousands of products with a constant stream of low-key updates, while Apple instead have 'tens' of products. That said though, they really do make too many products.
Screw all these small laptops. Make it huge. Why the hell do I want to look at a tiny little screen. I don't care if you are on the go. Screw that.
I still propose a laptop with a 20" screen and a motherboard with as many options as possible. (X16 graphics cards, upgradeable processors . . . )
@greasypigstudios: If you noticed the earlier article, it mentioned that the actual size of the device didn't change; only the screen.
@Inepsa: Don't forget the extra long extension cord.
@Inepsa: your logic is as ridiculous as a laptop with a 20" screen.
@whootowl
And when they whip it out will it play the blues?
It's exactly the Eee PC I've been waiting for. At last some decent screen real estate.
Its about damn time Asus. Too bad I already have a laptop.
Well, now I just have to wait for Apple to make an Eee-killer for about $200 more.
otVThe oHP U MPC coming out puts this to sta hame. I forgot the model # but that's what I'm waiting for.s i:>
@pizzatime: probably not. This laptop is for more basic use. If you want to game on a laptop, you need to shell out some decent $$ for some good specs.
This is the first one to look nice actually, id want if it were cheaper, which im sure competition will drive these down soon.
@blommer: you've got that backwards. giz references engadget all the time. its engadget who refuses to link to giz, like the lame little pussies they are...
So where can I preorder one?
DONT BUY ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!! unless they price it below 375 usd. The whole point is a cheap rig that is portable. We can find lots of 600 dollar rigs. DONT BUY IT if they over price it.
The rule of thumb is if it is gonna be 399 euro it will be 399 DOLLARS idiots. Bloody well look at the past price gouging if you live in the EU its always 1 dollar = 1 POUND/1EURO
250 dollar for ipod = 250 quid
have a look at these house prices and you will see what I mean [tinyurl.com] just follow the links or this site to check another source [tinyurl.com] the thing is obvious supply and demand
