Nike + iPod is great for running, not so great for most other stuff in the gym. So, Nike and Apple are teaming up with most of the major gym equipment makers—Life Fitness, Precor, Star Trac and Technogym—to make their cardio equipment Nike + iPod-friendly. You'll be able to track workouts on stair steppers, ellipticals, bikes and treadmills and upload them to NikePlus.com, like the standard Nike + iPod. Of course, this all requires to your gym to either buy new equipment or upgrade what they've got, so you might have to wait a while to get on board. [AppleInsider]

I think this confirms my theory of gagetry evolution. All gadgets will evolve to support iPod connectivity. If the device is unable to be connected to an iPod it will be replaced by a device that will.
How hard is it to make a quick iPhone software update to get make this thing compatible??? I don't get why this is so difficult...Apple needs to get their game face on and get Nike+ working with the iPhone.
@Xavoc:
... and ipods will continue to morph into that does-everything portable device we all want but don't yet know what it will be.... thing.
@nutbastard: Didn't Cartman have a Traper-Keeper that did that?
gym support will likely not be long in coming. Most major gyms switch out a good portion of their equipment every year due to wear and tear.
Gay.
@Falconfire: Uhhh. I've belonged to high-end gyms in multiple cities Milwaukee/Madison, WI/Chicago/NYC and the equipment turnaround is AT BEST 5 years.
@N@tedog: You're exactly right. It might show up on the coasts pretty quick, but here in the Memphis metro area, Cardio Theater & FitLinx is pretty rare.
You know, I was pondering creating such a device.
My device idea had workout charts that you could link to a web page that would let you see a animated demonstration of the workout. (i.e. when you get to that point in the routine and forget how to do a certain exercise, you can click on the demo and see it) The device would track heart rate, distance, calories burned and other measurements and store it back to a website so you could see your improvements. And of course, you could have a music to go along with your workout.
I guess I'll just wait for Nike and Apple to work out all the kinks and finally by an iPod/iHealth.
What really bugs me is not gym equipment, but why hasn't Nike and Apple come out with a Nike + system for Bicyclers? The Cycler and Running crowd are equally as huge and really all they need to do is create a new little receiver that can go on my bike.
@IUSEAMACSOSUEME: That was secretly a prototype for the iPod.
@Xavoc: Too bad you still cant listen to your radio on an iPod. Even stranger because the Audio quality on most iPods is barely adequate for FM radio.
@M.A.S.: Yes, that is exactly what I want. I actually thought it would have come out shortly after the running kit since Lance Armstrong has been affiliated since the Nike+ introduction.
@N@tedog: Maybe yours just suck, but I think at best maybe one section of our equipment is more than 3 years old, and thats the rowing machines.
@b33g33: Hrm, that's odd. I tend to believe my iPod has better sound quality than an FM radio. I just use my own headphones instead of the ones that came with it.
Stop developing stupid things for nike+ipod.
Any runner would buy a HRM attachment... in a heartbeat.
Are there no actual runners working at Nike on this project?
