Hey, I've been toying around with the idea of a Gizmodo reader meet-up. An excuse to play with gadgets...while going on a ski trip, really.
I was thinking of putting together a meet-up, with some outdoor-ready gadgets, at some mountain in Tahoe. Instead of the normal reader meet-up where you sit in a bar and stare at each other's ugly mugs and drink beer and play with gadgets in the back of a dark room, this would be a chance to test out waterproof cameras and new cellphones in the field. The hard part is figuring out how many people would come. We've got a big readership, but the event would be local, and I'm not sure how many of you would be interested in skiing/snowboarding. Drop me an email if you're interested.

Given my back injury, skiing is out for me. So I'll be at the bar at the bottom of the hill, staring at ugly mugs and playing with gadgets in the dark. I know you'll all end up in a bar anyways.
When?
I'm interested, but no can go...unless by local "at some mountain in Tahoe", you mean one of the chincy hills around the Twin Cities.
The view from the top of Heavenly...a bitchin resort.
@Geisrud:
you mean trollhagen, buckhill, and afton alps ain't mountains?
lol
do something in CO (keystone, breck, vail, etc) and I'm in.
I may be interested, though not over spring break. If you promise a poweder day, I will work even harder to show up :)
Ah! Count me in if it's Tahoe. I'm of course biased because I live in Reno. But if no one has skiis or a snowboard, I'll bring my HD DVD player for you to use as a sled.
If it were somewhere closer to Queens, NY, I'd be all for it.
No go for Ta-hoe for me. I'm with tdex. I've got too many great choices here in CO to think about leaving the state.
im down. really ill take any excuse to go skiing.
That would be awesome! You should lookup/come to Tamarack Resort its a sweet place
Interested. I'm down in Santa Barbara, but I try to head up to Tahoe a couple times a season when I don't go to Mammoth. Keep us updated.
ahh...the lengths some people will go to to make their vacation a business expense.
HAH! already beat to it by the spurned tribes lovers over at tribalwar.com! [www.tribalwar.com] They just ended their tahoe trip. Since I live in CT and have the Maine pass, it would be sweet if you guys came to Sunday river or Sugarloaf!
You've got a massive readership here in the northeast (New england), Maybe moving the perspective location into this area (vermont, massachussets, upstate NY) would be easier for a lot of the Giz Staff (NY Based) and those of us trapped in the icebox of the continental 48
I know it's been suggested farther up *points*
I'm in Sacramento, but I'm kinda cheap. So no Northstar. Maybe a group rate?
Squaw Valley!
Tahoe sounds great. The slopes, gadgets, and gambling! This year?
I can't make it to Tahoe this year, but would definitely be up for heading to Mammoth.
I live in Los Angeles so I think it would be great to get some people together here in LA and all caravan up to Mammoth as a geeked out gadgetry group.
If anyone would like to get together on March 28th and caravan up to Mammoth in the evening after work I am up for a Los Angeles trip. Just respond here and if there is interest we can exchange e-mails later.
My snowboarding gadgets include:
-Headrest lcd's in my truck with Kenwood dvd player
-Modded Xbox with games loaded on harddrive
-Garmin Rhino 530 and 130 with remote mics
-Cingular 8525 phone with unlimited data plan for internet on the way
-Thinkpad T61
-Henry's Beer Tour card from Angels (not a gadget, but very important)
Well crap, I was just skiing at Tahoe this past weekend. The snow was nice, enjoy.
Icyhnay on Tahoe. Hit up Whistler Blackcomb and I'll ride spankys ladder with you. (if you get caught doing it, the run is named after it)
[www.whistlerblackcomb.com]
(top left corner of resort)
Seeing as the readership is spreadout, would a poll of locations be worthwhile or do you already know where everyone is from?
I'm in if its in April or May. Email sent. Happy to contribute my gadgets to the mix (new Ortovox S1, Radar gun, etc.). If we do it at Alpine I could probably borrow a Recco device from Ski Patrol to demonstrate how that system works. Could probably do a tour of the high and low tech gadgets that the mountain uses for ski patrol, first aid and weather monitoring.
Well I have a cabin in Tahoe for the winter. Maybe Adam wants to hold something like this in the northeast. Have fun ice skating.
Hmmm...did someone say CO?
B
@TheCapt: I know where I am. That's all I can do.
you flying us out?
Count me in man. I haven't gone yet on account of burning up all my paid time off on that shitty Celica last year, and the flu this year. But now that it's march, aha! yes! I can skip work a couple days again!
@eisnein:
hilarious
BYOB! (unless you're cute, young and female - then i'll personally see to it that i get you drunk enough to slur while you ignore me)
@Tek Elements: Recco is a joke...and the joke is on us. I likely paid an extra $20 for that on my sidewinder jacket and no U.S. resorts use the thing.
While we're on the topic: Wouldn't Snowboarding and Paintball be just the fuckin' tits of all combinations of modern sports?
I'm in for Tahoe. Don't know what gadget I would test, but any excuse to board...
@Brian Lam: Aye. CO.
The season's getting kind of long in the tooth. Throw a date out there, Brian, maybe we'll be boarding in slush by the time it comes together. I've got a pass to Kirkwood but I think Heavenly would work out best for most; just stick to the Nevada side.
As for gadgets - i'll bring the ubermachinenpotatolaunchauzer. I bet we could hit the lake from the tip of Heavenly.
@nutbastard:
Note to self:
Do NOT get pulled over while transporting the ubermachinenpotatolaunchauzer over state lines.
I'll go if its at Squaw Valley.
@nutbastard: Yes.
exactly, any excuse to board. throw out a date, and hopefully we won't have to ride in board shorts
I'd probably be down.
Damn I was just at Heavenly for my spring break.
@blueharv: Why they Nevada side? There are no parks over there.
on a side note: Squaw valley has the most advanced lift system in the western hemisphere. So that would fit with the tech theme.
BLam - I was just out there in Tahoe this past weekend; skied Heavenly and Homewood.
Heavenly: amazing views of Lake Tahoe and NV, big (but can be crowed), $78 for a weekend lift ticket
Homewood: views are even nicer of Lake Tahoe!, smaller than Heavenly (but not nearly as crowed), $53 for a weekend lift ticket.
If I had a choice, I would be back at Homewood in a heartbeat. My $0.02.
Set some dates...
@nutbastard: You are a genius.
I'd go as long as I could get a seat in a carpool from SF (don't own a car. Which is a good thing in SF).
If there's any chance of you picking up the airfare tab for me to fly from Sydney to Tahoe, then I'm there with bells on.
Otherwise have fun and I won't hold my breath till you guys are down-under.
Hmm... I don't have any cool gadgets for snow, but I have a snowboard. My BlackBerry is mostly usable and my Zune drive hasn't died on me, while riding, yet. I agree with flprojekt. Just set a date and a metting point and see who shows. If nothing else, you'll get to play in Tahoe.
too far away from NY for me....and already went out west once this year to go skiing
:(
@anti-hello-kitty:
yeah i could probably pick you up on the way man, i'd be coming from San Jose.
Count me in.
Hmm... possibly... It is a bit of a drive, but a break would be good. You have some dates in mind?
Hey yeah that sounds wicked. I'm moving to san diego next month from australia with my missus, so i'll be looking for something to do while i wait for my work permit to be cleared. And i'll be able to network for jobs! (human network, you nerds).
I'll set up the GIZ crew with lift tickets and a sweet house to stay in if you want. You just gotta hold it in McCall Idaho Tamarack resort
I teach @ Tamarack so if anyone needs help on the slope I'm your man with a plan.
I'd love to go, if you did it in Washington
I'd go if you did it in Snowbird, UT April 11 or so :)
Agreed with some folks up there ^^^
Make it Killington, and I'll be there with bells on. Better do it fast though, the snow isn't gonna last much longer with the weather we've been having here.
see you in tahoe next year, where we'll be doing 360s and hurting ourselves just like old times.
Is Tahoe in the UK ?
....ehm. Scheisse.
...ehm. Bugger.
I live up here so I'll be there, Squaw is for gapers, have it at Alpine.
@godwhacker: haha the alps is where its at, forget tahoe!
you got that thieves? keep your eyes posted for pasty white geeks skiing down the hill while c
