LG's previously leaked Glimmer phone does something interesting that we haven't seen much of before—combine a touchscreen with a slide-out keypad underneath. The 2.8-inch touchscreen lets you control the 2-megapixel camera, Bluetooth, and AGPS (assisted GPS), but if you've got ham hands and feel like touch-dialing is a bit of a chore, you can slide out the keypad and call from there. It's an interesting compromise, and definitely an worthwhile phone if you're an Alltel subscriber. No price or availability dates yet. [Electronista]

Can't lie. That looks rather decent. Is it seriously called the fucking Glimmer? Mercy.
2nd LG phone I have seen that comes close but misses the mark. Why not a slide out qwerty keyboard. Same issue with the Voyager. Why flip when you can slide and use the big ol' screen?
Truth in advertising... not your regular LG phone... definitely not your regular LG phone girl.
/eyes wide hand over mouth shrieking quietly
as an alltel customer in a non-AT&T market (no iphone), it's nice to have an option for a decent phone. i have a year left on my RAZR, but it's nice to see alltel getting some decent phone action.
...and where is the link back to the GIZMODO home page??? the large text at the top won't take me back.
what gives?
The HTC Touch Dual has explored this form factor already.
Technically the HTC TyTN and related phones are touchscreen with slider, just a big keyboard slider.
The HTC Touch Dual has this format down a little back. There were two versions I think - one with a normal keypad and one with the Pearl-like 20 key pad.
Technically, any HTC TyTN-esque slider is a touchscreen with a slider, just a big sliding keyboard.
@D.LYTE: you're doing it wrong.
@Ypoknons: except that the HTC phones are ugly, and this one is actually really really nice.
Yes I am also a Alltel customer and it is nice to have a good phone to choose from now besides the RAZR, and in June when my contract is up I will deferentially get this phone, I just hope its out by then.
@babaki:
but the menu UI looks eh....couldn't they have jazzed up the icons a bit?
I make holders for the arm/wrist for all cell phones. You can make calls without taking the phone out of the holder. holdaphone.com
@babaki: If you want to talk fashion, i'd say its pretty regular LG. The KF700 has slightly nicer chocolate keypad, but of course, choice on US CDMA networks is limited.
I'll take a QWERTY where the keypad is.
If you can tether and it supports evdo data it would be nice, also needs a qwerty slider over that regular keypad which would be useless if it has a heat sensitive touch keypad
Figures...I got my LG Shine (TU720) less than a month and a half ago, now they come out with this.
Le sigh.
@Geisrud: That's what I say. QWERTY + Touchscreen = Happy Panda
This phone will be out the 13th of March.
That chick looks like a friggin alien! EEEEEEEEEEK!
TUDR
(Too ugly didn't read)
I just got the chocolate v2 and I like it, but I would get this touchscreen slider. IT's cool looking.
Ok....so what happened to using good looking Korean girls to sell these things?
I am not buying either phone unless there is some prospect of receiving sex when owning one of these, dont you know how to advertise, jeez. LG has a long way to go compared to Apple. I have not seen anything that matches my iphone, blackberry…your phones suck. LG…whatev
Alltel does not have towers in large metro areas, the north east, or california, but, it does have the largest native footprint of any carrier, and either way, when you join alltel, verizon, or sprint you will have the same coverage pretty much, but alltel will get better suburbs (they all share towers under roaming partnership). As far as network, the great thing about alltel is that it is EVDO in more places and since it doesnt have much customers its network doesnt reach capacity as much as verizons, if anythin sprint beats the EVDO, but, sprint has crappy service once you exit downtown metropolis. In the past 6 years alltel grew nearly exponentionally, and it is the cheapest from all companies once you compare features/plans. Also, please do not compare att and t mobile with these companies... GSM and their EDGE is a JOKE compared to even 1X, and to EVDO its like dial up against cable. And with REV-A coming to alltel in no time, even better... By the way you can watch youtube in this phone, and the GUI is very iphone like... plus its made out of metal in the outside!!!! The UI is customizable in colors and font, but the best thing is that it is so easy to use, from all the touch phones i've tested this comes the closest to the iphones easyness of use (the HTC touch is crappy at this) and best of all you can stream youtube and not have crappy Windows mobile!!!
ALLTEL ROCKS!!!!! This is one of the coolest phones ever.... I didn't even have to change my plan. I can use it without having an outragous cellphone bill. I basically text anyway. now i can watch utube or whatever on it.... Thanks alltel you did it. I am a very happy customer. :)
