Taiwanese manufacturer Netronix is promising a new spin on an old idea: putting a touchscreen on an the EB-100, an E-Ink-based e-book reader. We've actually seen the basic design before, in the gen-3 Cybook by Bookeen. But there was never promise of touchscreen, nor anything said about 802.11g Wi-Fi, which Netronix is also offering. The rest of the specs are pretty straightforward: 6" screen, SD card slot, support for PDF, RTF, TXT, HTML, MP3, AAC, and some image files. But as much as I enjoy the Kindle, a touchscreen interface may really be what's needed to bring mass appeal to the e-book concept. You hear me, Jeff Bezos? [Product Page via Tecnogadgets]

Flipping through an ebook, iPodTouch style.... I'd buy it.
I'd much rather have the Kindle's interface. I wouldn't want to have to move my hands off the device to tap around, let alone get fingerprints all over the screen of something I'm trying to read. The fact that I can control the entire kindle interface with my right thumb is fantastic and it's extremely fast too. I'm also a big fan of the tactile feedback you get from actually pressing a button. This is the same reason that I don't like touch screen phones, I like to be able to dial while driving without looking and I don't like to have to hold the device in one hand and tap the screen with the other. In any case, I was never really a big reader but I always aspired to be and the Kindle is actually making it happen.
Nice. Sounds better than the kindle.
Not really a new spin on an old idea actually. It's kind of like an Irex Iliad only with a smaller screen (6 instead of 8 inches). Same wifi touchscreen and file support it sounds like. The nice thing about the Iliad is that with the touchscreen/wacom pen, you can write notes in the margins of your books and pdfs.
I like this idea. Sounds like it would actually work. I'd go for one of those if the price is right.
I'll take one please
The idea isn't exactly new ... a device like this has been around for almost two years now. See the iRex iLiad: [www.irextechnologies.com]
It's a little bit expensive, though, 649€, with the price being left unchanged for other a year now (and apparently, there seem to be quite a lot of software issues, at least according to some users in several ebook forums ...)
really though... I'll take an Iliad over this any time.
Personally, i would love to see the pen idea come to life on an ebook reader. There is something to holding and editing a paper with a pen and writing notes. I hate paper, but it is hard to navigate sometimes and take notes on the kindle.
You really want me to buy an eBook? Give me an all-I-can-read plan for $XX.XX a month. If you companies would just let me read as much as I want for one price, I'd probably have one already.
Oh well. Guess it'll never happen.
I hope it comes with a hankie to wipe greasy fingerprint smears off. Touch screen on an ebook doesn't sound like a good idea to me unless it's stylus onry.
@migsims: Me too. This could be a good competitor to lower prices though.
I don't see the point of touchscreen. If will make it more expensive, use more energy and probably won't work that well with an e-ink display.
For me an ebook reader should be basically like the Sony one, but with wifi and cheaper. That's all I want.
If they ever make these things look like PADDs from Star Trek, I won't be able to resist.
