We're not sure whether this patent will actually be implemented or if it's one of those cover-our-asses sort of filings, but Apple's had a DVR-like patent in the works since at least 2006. The figures show a TiVo-ish program that records TV, but then makes the recorded files available to watch on their iPods. There's even a direct docking mechanism so you don't need a PC to transfer files to and fro. Could this be the next-gen AppleTV? Probably not, since Apple's going in the direction of downloading shows from their iTunes store, and letting people record shows easily to transfer to their iPods kind of eats into their other downloading pie. I especially like Fig.4. So descriptive! On second thought I'll keep my media center.
I will say 90% of all the postings on this website is about Apple.
No wonder they have 5% of the global Desktop Market and 0.45% of the world mobile phone market.
GIZMODO: "So much in love with shiny new APPLE toys, it's unnatural"
@The Full English Please!!:
Which is just too fuckin' hilarious, considering that 90% of YOUR comments are in those Apple posts...
If a new AppleTV comes out with DVR (has to support OTA Digital) I will dismantle my Vista Media Center server.
well ok more like 70%... but STILL!
@The Full English Please!!: I will say about 70-80% of the comments on this site sums up to little more than bitching about it.
Of course apple would want to own the patents on things that eat there iTunestore moneypie.
@Kaiser-Machead:
I like complaining.
I know, I know....but we all have to stick to what were good at right?
@The Full English Please!!:
Actually I think it is more like 3-4%
Funny how Apple can post profits that are about 25% of Microsoft's with only 3-4% of the Desktop Market.
This device doesn't make sense to me. If you download the content with you laptop, as I do, and you then move the content over to your iPhone or Video iPod, like I do, why would you watch the content on your laptop or connect your laptop to the TV, instead of watching it from your hand-held device? This only makes sense if you want to go over to a friends house and bring the content with you. Very niche.
I have noticed since the update from 1.0 to 2.0 my Apple TV has been locking up a lot. Hopefully before going to 3.0 they fix that.
I Have about 850 CD's that were painstakingly ripped to lossless; it's a pain in tha ass when it hangs while coming back from sleep
The iPhone has this "tv turner" options under the iPod settings. Yet I can't figure out how to recieve TV signals.
If the Apple TV had a DVR feature plus everything it can do now and with no monthly fees... I would put it on my short list of items to get. This from someone who doesn't own a single Apple product.
A DVR would be a great addition to Apple tv. It seems like they intend it to be a replacement for cable/satellite altogether though.
What I think would be awesome is if the iPhone were a remote control for your tv through Apple tv as well as a touchpad for your comp. Like that hack.
@ParJoe: That'd be sick, but I doubt that the ATV would allow command input beyond the IR port.
@Kaiser-Machead: I would hope they would keep the IR port, it's good for universal remotes, but having iPhone/iTouch control would be a nice addition!
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. If Apple comes out with a replacement for my Time Warner DVR, I'm all in.
@Lupison: Um, my iPhone only has TV Out setting in the iPod menu. So you can connect your iPhone to your TV. I'm not sure where you're seeing TV tuner settings.
I would just like something that doesn't cannabalize itself every six months like my Comcast DVR.
Yes, I know I should just get a new Tivo...
@Kaiser-Machead: Yeah, crap. No bluetooth on ATV.
What I'd really want is for the iPhone to be more like the PSP is to the PS3. Where you can access recorded content on your PS3 wirelessly through the PSP.
That coupled with a DVR would be sweet. For either system actually.
@ParJoe: The PS3 is getting a DVR component called PlayTV, maybe this year, and the rumor is that it will be DRM free.
A portable DVR ? .. it's a Archos ..they have done that for years
what a lame patent .. no wonder the US patent system is going down the pan
@tokyobob:
You read my mind. Archos works pretty well, too. But I like a better computer based solution. MacPro, EyeTV, 40" 1080p LCD TV, Surround sound system, 19" LCD monitor for at the desk/lazy chair, and iPhone for lunch break works for me.
@baltwade: Yeah, that's exactly what I'm talking about. I think it looks almost perfect. Is that definitely coming to the sates though?
As far as I know, many players have been doing since a long time. e.g. players from cowon, archos etc..then whats so new about this?
@nutbastard: Because those are the posting that are most fun to read.... all those arguments
@justinpe: Hey hey i like apple, i use a mac... i just hate the small things apple do after so much hard work in producing great products. Example: MMS, making any mp3 song as a ringtone and non-crippled blutooth that does file transfer. EVERY phone in the U.K thats £50 or more on "pay as you go" is able to do this.
