Ben Heck, maker of the most incredible video game hardware mods on the planet, has made another version of his one-handed controller for the Xbox 360. Looking a lot easier to hold, it requires the use of your leg to control the right analog stick (and idea that sounds weirder than it probably actually feels). But the oddest design choice? A PlayStation d-pad was actually stuck in the unit, meaning that in time, the controller could cause a paradox destroying the entire Universe. [benheck]

Great for playing DOA Xtreme 2!
Sony D-PAD ftw!
(3rd leg playing? I see what the other hand is doing...and I am now blind!)
As if I wasn't already half convinced that people fap whenever they kill me online, now I know for certain that they are able to.
The man is a genius!! Not sure it's entirely practical or comfortable without actually trying it but just thinking about it and implementing it is fantastic.
Heck's work is pretty damn remarkable.
That said, I don't get the point. As mentioned, unless your mastrubating and/or drinking a beer... why the need for a free hand while gaming?
I just did a little looking and he designed the original one for a soldier injured in Iraq. I'm assuming that this revision is likely for the same person, or someone similar.
I didn't even think about the possibility of it being a device to make gaming more accessible to people often looked over with more complex input devices...
As a guy who got a lot of pleasure out of watching his grandmother-in-law (mostly paralyzed from a stroke and wheelchair bound) kick the crap out of everyone else at Super Rub-a-Dub during Christmas with just one good hand...
Keep up the good work, Heckendorn.
I believe this was made for an injured service man who lost one of his arms in Iraq. I think it's a refined version of the one he made last year [gizmodo.com]
there are peope with only one hand....
he should make the right analog stick the base of a joystick, would make it much easier to use it that way than to try and aim in COD4 with your leg.
@Evil J:
What about those of us who play XB360 who want to both fap it AND drink beer simultaneously?? Where's the no-hands controller? Heck: You're halfway there!
@nutbastard:
If you're at that point... fuck the 360, you've got all the fun you need.
@CubFan81 and Evil J: He made the original for a guy who lost a hand in Iraq, IIRC. Kinda hard to play video games with a standard controller if you only have one hand.
the mod looks pretty damn good for a homebrew hack. I just dont think that it's practical. My wrist hurts just looking at it.
@Rhainor:
I dunno if my post had showed up when you wrote that, but yeah, I looked it up myself and read the same thing. To be honest, the mod being used for people with disabilities (or whatever the current PC phrase is for it) didn't cross my mind... because it's a part of the population usually overlooked by the industry.
All that said, I think it's cool that he did that, and is even making it better for other people who want to game but for physical reasons cannot.
@Evil J:
which is why i applaud nintendo's return to simplicity. intentional or not, the simplicity of their wiimote makes many, if not most, games playable with only one hand.
"If you're at that point... fuck the 360, you've got all the fun you need."
Wouldn't actually fucking the 360 require one MORE hand?? I dunno about you, but the tray slot does not look like an inviting orifice to me!
I dunno man I heard you'll tray anything once...
@iluvhatemail: I agree. Left stick in most games is forward, back, left, and right anyway. Leave the thumb - even if it's mainhand - to do the precise targeting... Remarkable product nonetheless!
That still doesn't make sense. You need to lay the underside buttons along the edge. Break apart a Guitar Hero Guitar and use that.
Better yet, take a joystick from a flight simulator and use that as the base. This frankenstein thing looks retarded. God, I'm lucky I have 2 hands.
Hmmm. I give it a one-handed thumbs down. The whole point of a one-handed gadget is to make it work... with ONE HAND. One hand + leg is messy.
I would have fused it with an honest to goodness joystick. Y'know, If I had any hardware skillz what-so-ever.
The use of the playstation d-pad is not going to make the entire universe disappear, it's a very good idea. The 360 controller with a playstation d-pad would be the best console controller ever.
Seriously, I fnd the 360 d-pad terribly annoying.
Would like to see video of this thing in action... also too bad he didn't use the rechargable battery.
