We happen to use an 802.11n AirPort Extreme as our router, so we put today's new firmware upgrade to the test to see if TIme Machine really does do networked backup to an AirPort Disk. In case you're wondering, AirPort Express never supported AirDisk, so it won't do Time Machine over the network—our testing confirmed this. With the Extreme, it requires only a base-station firmware update and a plugged-in external HDD. When we logged into AirPort Extreme using the Finder and clicked on the folder representing our AirDisk, Time Machine was able to spot it, no problem. [Time Machine on Giz]

what ever happened to youtube uploaded videos... you know videos that dont take forever to load
Gizmodo needs some organization with their equipment.
The porn music in this video is very fitting, since this is what Apple fanboys must get off on.
Am I the only one who thinks that Time Machine's hype is blown out of proportion? It's nice that you can access anything in the backup repository through Finder, but incremental backup is nothing new. Ever hear about Areca? It does very much the same things as far as the important incremental backup feature goes.
so can i use my "Boob-shaped" Airport Extreme, or is it only for the Newer "square" base station
The title of this article was pretty cool, until I realized it was only Apple software! Damn you H G Wells!
I can't get this to work! I've tried every step. Do you need to connect the USD HD to the laptop to do the first backup and then connect over the airport?
@strang: No one ever said it was anything new. Many an office drone knows about backup systems and such, but this one is one of the nicest backup tools for a personal system that I've seen.
I wonder why you didn't film the hours and hours and fucking hours it takes to back up wirelessly. I mean yeah, it works, but I could back up my data faster by writing it down.
@humorlessbot: "waaaahaaahah.... it takes too long to automatically send gigabytes of data wirelessly to a hard drive on the other side of my apartment.... waaaaahhhh.... and it took me three clicks of my mouse to do it.... waaaaaaaahhhhh...."
@strang: "Ever hear about Areca?"
Of course not. Neither have most average users. Most average users never think about back up until the system is hosed. That is why time machine is significant. It is integrated and effortless.
@bobdobbs: See? You feel me. And would you believe I had to ask the nubile harem girls to momentarily stop sliding grapes into my mouth so I could sit up and write this.
@humorbot: I hear ya, bro. But I don't feel ya.
Who cares!
did the updates and dont see my HDD on time machine wtf?!
Nevermind...it works now..both macbooks can back up now on the same HDD
I bought a Time Capsule at 2:00PM.
They release this update at 6:00PM...
WTF.
I'm so glad this update came out. I bought the Airport Extreme and have two macs, now I have to get a working USB drive and I can finally make use of time machine.
could you attach an external HD with your iTunes folder inside to the Extreme and use that as the source for an Apple TV?
on the flip side from first post: thank you for not using youtube to post video clips. they wont show at work.
So I've been using time machine with my external HD for a while now. When I connect it to my airport it tries to create a new backup folder and says there isnt enough room (there isnt b/c of the old time machine data).
How do I get time machine to start using the old data from when I used to connect the HD by USB?
I really don't want to have to delete all my old backup data to fix this.
I tried several times last night to get this working but it is slower than balls and nothing happens. Time Machine sees my hard drive but it just says "preparing..." when I try to back up, and when I try to Enter Time Machine, it just gets stuck trying to connect to the server. Not sure what I am doing wrong. I hooked the MyBook back to my MacPro via Friewire after about an hour of nothing happening. Any ideas?

Unfortunately at this time there is no way to do that. Also there is no way to transport your time machine backup. That means if you get a larger backup driver or need to change drives for some reason you have to create a new backup.
is it just me, or is this totaly unnessesary? I have run timemachine on two macs with out an router. once i connect the disk on one of my macines and connect the "disc" o a DVD for that mather. it works just like if it was localy connected. So whats up with this function or the "share driver" updates?
Onece i connect my USBdrive over the network, timemachie recognise the disk (that originaly was set up localy) and starts backing up.
@diabolusunknown: Better than your midget porn.
just did it with my new macbook pro, no problem at all, just remember to update your system first, i had to update my imac in order for it to see idisk and the time machine. I didn't have to create another backup, i can use my exsisting backup without any problem
update your software, so that it can detect the idisk. I had to update my imac and my new macbook pro first, once it's installed, it recognizes my old time machine backup no problem, no need to create new backup.
@humorbot:
Actually, that was a pretty funny comment. That said, there seem to be a few workarounds.
1) Plug your computer into one of your ethernet ports. Not suprisingly, wired networking > wireless.
2) Start the backup via wireless connection. Stop the backup. Unplug external HD and plug in via USB or FW (you want FW800). Time Machine appears smart enough to continue your backup in a manner that is useable by the AEBS.
This only makes sense for the first backup (or if you have a lot of data for one particular incremental backup), as it removes the whole convenience factor of wireless.
@godawgs7:
The issue seems to be that backups to an "AirDisk" are now using a .sparseimage vs. the original backup db used by TimeMachine. When you start backing up via AirDisk, TimeMachine is going to create a new .sparseimage - even if you have months of backups.
Those backups aren't useless - they will still be accessible if you connect the drive locally - but they will be taking up space on your drive (and TimeMachine won't auto-delete those backups as it generates new ones in the .sparseimage...).
This feature is not officially supported by Apple at this time, so YMMV. That's what they told me. And where does it say their update fixes this? Not on their website. So, try it, you might get lucky. If not, oh well.
@JacquesAss:
Thx for your #2 tip on using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Base Station, then switching to a wired connection. Worked perfectly.
Started the TimeMachine b/up wirelessly, allowed it to run for a couple minutes, then stopped it, unplugged the USB drive from the AEBS, plugged it into the computer directly via FW400, opened TimeMachine and it recognized the Disk. Ran TimeMachine via the wired connection, after it finished I ejected it, plugged it back into the AEBS, initiated the AirDisk in the finder, then opened TimeMachine and presto!!
Awesome tip. Note: this works for first-time TimeMachine wireless backups only. Saved me over 40 hours of wireless waiting!!
