Blackberry outages send certain kinds of people into blind, feverish panics, like their arms were cut off, immolated and shoved down a garbage disposal. So that's why RIM is updating their database in the wee hours of the morning over the weekend—tonight from 2-6AM EST, or more precisely, 6-10AM GMT. Expect no email, internets or roaming during that dark, scary period. [CG]

Excellent picture choice :)
"God...how will I get by without email or internet on my blackberry from 2-6 AM?! It'll be like...before blackberries were invented!""
Seriously, haven't they heard of the wonders of load balancing and concurrent update?
Seriously, haven't they heard of the wonders of load balancing and concurrent updates? Makes one wonder...
@Poltras: Guess not not
Whoa, why is there a star next to my post? I'm a married man, what are you trying to insinuate Giz?
@Poltras: Thats what happens every other time when you dont notice...
tonight from 2-6AM EST,
Boy, this new daylight savings time regime really IS confusing; I can't believe we're back on standard time already!
@Poltras: Who needs load balancing when you can just cut the power and turn the whole network off.
@Poltras:
There is no clustering, load balancing, or any of the 'standard' resiliancy options available with RIM.
It's basically a tarted-up paging system, which still has multiple single points of failure, based on it's archaic heritage.
When RIM (the service) dies/goes off-line you're completely screwed - you have no option to get to Email via another route.
When your local RIM server connected to your Exchange box dies, you're completely screwed - there is no clustering, hot standby auto-failover, alternative routing etc.
And this technology is a good idea because???
But what about OS 4.5? They seem to want to keep A2DP from Pearl users for all eternity.
@MINI Driver:
"And this technology is a good idea because???"
'Cause Blackberries have QWERTY ;-)
this gonna F-up my pancake recipe in the morning...crud
At 1:59 a.m. I am going to e mail my crackberry guys and say "Oh baby, I cant sleep and I have been dying to tell you that there is something I need from you, and I need it NOW and its....." hit send, and take my phone off the hook.
Fun and games with pre-planned outtages. >:)
Whats the source of this outage? This is the only site I see mention of this including RIM/BlackBerry.com sites.
@Curves:
you are so evil.... in a good way!!!!!
@Curves:
Dammit I hate not having anything relative to say about the post topic, leaving me to comment on comments. I do however have a black belt in digression, so this is not really a problem.
The kid in my loves the frosted side, but the pervert in me likes to read comments like that.....
Hopefully Nut won't beat me for cheating, even if it's only in my head.
@Dearhaw:
Yeah, and so did typewriters - remember them?
I expect the CrashBerry QWERTY will go the same way....
Physical buttons are SO last millennium.
Anybody who pulls their blackberry out when leaving the bars tonight is asking to be mugged...more so than usual.
Um, no internets or roaming? I think that's up to the carrier, not RIM's servers...I know my EDGE traffic doesn't pass through Toronto.
I can't find anything "official" from RIM confirming this. Where's the original press release? Seems hinky.
@mtopper:
That's why she bears a star, man.
(waiting in the sky...)
I'm already having a panic attack. To think that if I were actually awake at these hours I'd have to use Outlook to get my mail! Fetch my smelling salts, someone!
I got word a couple hours ago from an IT person at my job that the outage has been canceled, per Homeland Security's request, due to natural disasters in the midwest. I guess Homeland Security doesn't know how to function without their crackberries, either, and is slightly drunk with power.
