Miu HDPC Does Linux and Windows in All-in-One Package

Yes, you will have seen slimmer UMPCs, but probably not one quite so feature-packed as the new Miu Hybrid Dual PC. The Dual bit comes from its dual-boot options of XP plus WinCE 5.0 or linux Qplus. It earns its Hybrid label by being a cellphone, navigation device, PMP, electronic dictionary, internet phone, voice recorder, games machine, mobile IPTV device and digital camera. We reckon that list of functions at least partly excuses its 0.96-inch depth. More details after the gallery.

The HDPC has a 800 x 480 pixel four-inch LCD, two 1W speakers, QWERTY keyboard, touchpad and game controllers. It even fits in a 30GB or 60GB HDD (with the option of a 4GB SSD) alongside a slew of ports including USB2.0 and PS2 mouse/keyboard connector. Add in 802.11b/g, maximum 4GB RAM, Bluetooth 2.0, webcam and a five megapixel camera and you're getting a pretty full-featured PC, though of course we're not sure how it handles in-use.

You'd think the battery life would suffer running all that, plus its Via processor (500MHz or 1GHz), but the reported life is 7 hours at "high power" or an impressive 90 hours at low power settings. This multi-use gadget really does fall down on size, measuring 6.4 x 2.6 x 0.96 inches and weighing pounds, so it's a pocket-stretcher. But it's not a wallet-stretcher: it's available from July for between $400 and $500 in Korea, no idea though if it'll make it across the Pacific. [Aving]

  • Like a SideKick designed by The Terminator.

I predict that the frustration level with that keyboard will spill over to hurt innocent bystanders.

I'm also fairly certain that if you took a tube of super glue and attached all the devices that one product replaces to each other the aesthetic effect would be very similar.

  • It's a little chunky, though that can be forgiven because of it's features but my God is it hideous...

There's no read link which is a little odd.

Oh, and one last thing, Engadget were reporting it'll have 4GB of RAM - 4GB? That must mean it's gonna have XP x64 then...

  • Looks like it may be a worthy competitor to the HTC Shift -- except for that wonky-looking keyboard....

  • now... imagine how awesome this gadget would have been... if only they had ivested an additional 500 dollars to get any random design student design that thing :-)

  • i've yet to see something too good to be true for its announced/predicted price to come out at with the announced/predicted price.

  • @mumin: good design costs a little more than that.

  • @flyboy: i know, but if you look at this device, it's obvious that no designer was involved. ever.

  • Electronic dictionary.
A common prize on 1989 episodes of Double Dare is still considered a viable marketing tool? (Though, I defy you to find any 25-year old who would refuse a free week at Space Camp.)

  • I like the idea of this device... Not the execution though. I'd take a hit on performance if it was a bit more svelte.

  • Thats a pretty big phone but its kind of worth it.
Especially since the new trend of cell phone carriers using wifi services to make calls.
I wouldn't buy it though because of the fact that i dont want a brick in my pocket or on my waist.
If it weighs pounds i'd hate to see it drop on the floor though i dont see me buying this phone but im sure some korean tech lover or tech geek would love to buy one of these.

  • @strider_mt2k: agreed about the keyboard, those raised sides are going to make it difficult for people with beefy hands (me) and someone typing with thumbs.

  • There is no way a full-featured UMPC with 60gb of storage, a 5 megapixel camera, webcam, 1ghz processor and up to NINETY hours of battery life is showing up for $500.

I wouldn't care if it looked like a cinderblock, if it really fulfilled all those promises. I'd be lining up with cash in hand.

I can not see this happening, though. It's either going to cost a lot more than that, or it won't work for shit.

  • casting my vote for the latter.

sidenote, they could have left off the flip screen thing for a phone interface, made the speakers and joystick part of the TOUCHSCREEN, use that for virtual pad, or just make it so you dial from the now flat easily typable slide out keyboard. Oh, and it would have probably shaved some thickness too.

  • @permissionmag:
Exactly. Not to mention the 800 x 480 screen and Windows XP and CE license.
You can't even get a good WinCE device (e.g. HTC Tilt) for $400-500 so I can't see this happening either.

  • Just imagine it on the desk of a Star Trek briefing room - fits right in doesent it?

You could always tell people its a Star Trek phone. Ofcourse some people might punch you in the nose for that.

  • I've been a longtime (sideline) fan of Giz, and I was never interested in leaving any comments....... until now.

I think I've found my perfect portable gadget for me, if every spec including $$$ is true.

I've already emailed my brother in Korea to keep an eye out for this phone and buy for me and ship it to the States.

I have Verizon, but for this phone, I am willing to break the contract and switch to any provider that the phone will support.

So, from now 'til July, I'll be praying to every-known-god to men to let me have this phone as advertised!!!

Everyone, please join hands and let us pray...
