Today, Fujitsu introduced its MHZ2 BJ drives (heh, heh...BJ), the first 2.5" 7200rpm hard drives to reach the 320GB capacity. They'll be available at the end of June, for an as-yet unannounced price, and will support the SATA 3Gbps interface. So now when go trick out your laptop, you're gonna have a full-on headache trying to decide between maximum HDD spin speed, maximum capacity—at this point 500GB at 5400rpm— and of course the higher-priced SSD alternatives. Impressive. According to the spec sheet linked to the press release, the drive has the shorter 9.5mm height meaning it will fit in laptops requiring the smaller form factor. By jove, I think it's time for an upgrade!
Umm...that is where the BJ designation comes from, right?
Anyone have benchmark data for 2.5" drives (5400 vs 7200)? Battery usage and performance numbers would be great!
A 7200 RPM BJ. Ouch.
Throw this baby in your PS3 and you're set for life.
@Johnny Chimpo: The 7,200 is about 1,800 rpm faster than the 5,400 and will get worse battery life.
@SchruteBuck: True but the 7200 keeps lag tim minimal. Thats the reason I want it for my MBP. But Im still waiting for the 500 gb 7200 rpm drive. Then ill buy it up. My video work takes up way too much room.
@SchruteBuck: Umm...thanks, SchruteBuck, but Johnny Chimpo was asking for benchmarks. As such, perhaps it would be better said that 5,400 is about 1,800 rpm slower than the 7,200 and will get better battery life. Much more informative.
@schizogony: I have the 5400RPM version in mine. I wouldn't dare put this in to "add" more heat to the unit already. YMMV.
Just recently swapped out a 5400 RPM drive in a Thinkpad for a 7200 one, and it makes a noticable difference in speed. I have not noticed a drop in my battery life, but it would not surprise me if there was one. For me, given a choice between hard drive speed or battery life, I'll take the speed every time.
I did try one model of SSD with very little luck. It drew one watt less power (not worth it) and overall was only slightly faster than the 5400 RPM drive it replaced.
This will definitely be going into my Mac Mini music streamer!
WTF guys! There's a 10,000 RPM 500 GB drive available!
And its 2.8" or something like that before some dork points his a** out to me!
The last sentence of the official post is right where I currently stand. I have a 7200 rpm 160GB drive... do I get a 500GB at 5400rpm? 320GB/7200rpm? Or wait as long as I can and see how SSD progresses within the next several years?
I love to have one of these but the current laptop market 80% of the laptop only use 5400rpm drives with larger GB than the 7200rpm drives. I wonder if it is even profitable with such a small market share, and when the 7200rpm drive would be the standard for laptop drives.
