Sometimes simple is best: the ABC3D pop-up book is just wonderfully captivating, and does exactly what it says on its transforming cover. You may think more "coffee table, guest amusement" than "give to kids" but it's only $19.95, so why not let the little tykes appreciate its good design too? By Marion Bataille, due out October 14th. ***SPOILER ALERT***

Today's Gizmodo is also brought to you by the number three.
-and a grant from the Chubb Group.
@Hiphopopotamus: I like how they left Q and R in there.
TBS editied them out.
This would be quickly destroyed by any actual kids. Adults wouldn't find it to be a page-turner, due to the predictable plot.
Cool, but I think I'll wait until it comes out for the Kindle.
Ok America. If we are the Russian. How we to use book? In motherland some of the letters not same as UNITED STATES letter.
GoatMonkey:
In soviet russia, book uses you!
actually, this would not be very good for kids. the letters all need to be in the same style to teach kids to differentiate them (so not good for the younger kids who dont yet know the letters). too many pop up thingies will entice the slightly older kids to "explore" (translate: rip and tear).
as a coffee table book, adults would indeed find the plot less than suspensful.
I love this and wish I had had it when my daughter was learning the alphabet. Contrary to what Manditory said though, it wouldnt have been destroyed as she had a great respect for books, especially pop up books, since half the fun was trying to figure out HOW they popped up.
I was disappointed by "Z," in that the style was previously used on "N."
I can imagine John Lithgow screaming as he takes a hammer to this thing.
@strider_mt2k: re: TBS
That's too funny. Well played!
@gotsmart: PBS even :P
This reminds me of the awesome pop-up books by Robert Sabuda. Specifically the Wizard of Oz one.
They do some really amazing stuff with pop ups, and my kids love the books, and take good care of them.
Still not as cool as my Star Wars Pop-up Guide to the Galaxy.
@Hiphopopotamus: Thanks...i didn't even have to watch the video apparently...you know what! Screw You! I'm sick of you spoiling all the fun!!! BOOOOOOO!!!!!
Super-cool, but note that the book does not ship until OCTOBER.... can be pre-ordered, though
Hey, thanks!! Very cool, I got to see it without spending $19.95. The design and idea is nice, but color and patterned papers would appeal to me a lot more. I probably would have spent $19.95 if it wasn't so blah. But that's just ever-more-stimulus-seeking me.
@Curves: I wanted to figure it out as a child too. Unfortunately, this usually meant poking prodding and pulling until the poor little guys came unglued or folded or whatever.
They forgot to open that extra page up on the right to show the letter "W", which would be formed by mirroring the "V" through the gutter. Small oversight.
@Geisrud: That was the big plot twist!
Finkle IS Einhorn!
Give that book to a child and it will be ruined in less than 60 seconds. And I am giving them a 50 second lead.
wow... U
I really like this actually. I kind of want it... To bad I'm a student and can't remember what money looks like : (
20bucks! Sold.
I had to go back because i didnt see the W but the i saw that it used the reflection to make a W which was pretty clever.
It is more for adults than children unless its children that already know their alphabet because i think they'll get confused because some of the pages had the letter that goes after more visible than the letter that goes before.
I'd most definetly buy it though more of a coffee table book or maybe a book in your personal library.
I love a good reference book such as this. Comes in quite handy in many situations.
@Curves: I have boys....
@Curves: I managed to encourage them to read and enjoy it, but not to get them to show any respect for the books themselves... or any of their other things, for that matter....
Amazon.ca doesn't have it listed for preorder yet... :(
This does not seem kid-friendly for those learning the alphabet.
@thekaleb:
This isn't a teaching aide. Just because it's a popup book doesn't mean it's for kids. I've seen some incredible popup books that would last mere seconds at the adept destructive hands of a child.
@mtopper:
Kids can also appreciate Art Books. It's also a part of education, don't you believe?
This said, it is not because it's a popup book that it is only intended for kids.
@boogstar: I just ordered one from them, try again ;)
@NicleT: Thanks! I was searching for "abc3d" but it's listed as "abc-3d" for some reason. CAD$16.02 for pre-order too!
