TGDaily is reporting that selected Best Buys—like one in Dublin, Calfornia—are so eager to clear out their HD DVD stock they're a step away from building a huge bonfire: All HD DVDs are just $9.99, with TV series on HD DVD walking away at a steep 70 percent discount. But your YMMV.
Some stores have apparently pulled HD DVDs entirely to make room for Blu-ray, not even bothering to hawk the scraps. TGDaily's sources tell 'em that whatever's not sold by the end of this month will be sent back to publishers, though some stores have already started tossing them back. Still, if you haven't trashed your player already, might as well stop by your local store to see if you can't scrounge up some cheap HD goods. Let us know what the scene's like at your local shop. DIBS ON THAT "RUMOR HAS IT"
At these prices, maybe HD DVD still has a chance?
(Just kidding.)
I've been looking for HD DVD TV sets!
I didn't even realize there were TVs with built in HD DVD drives?
could you not just hook up a blue ray to your hd dvd tv set?
It sounds like "HD DVD TV sets" means sets of TV episodes on HD DVD, not TV sets with HD-DVD Players built in.
What is an HD DVD TV set? I'm assuming they're talking about HD DVD players, but that's just an odd way of saying it. I mean, it sounds like they think certain TVs were built for HD DVD only.
No, I think they mean TV series on HD DVD.
@iNate2000: LOL, that's totally it. /facepalm
@rbf2000: Me too, can they be used without an HD DVD?
/sarcasm
wtf is a HD DVD TV?
I think Giz needs to rewrite their post, because I thought "HD DVD TV Set" meant that a tv had an integrated HD DVD player, but looking at the image it is only the Box Sets of TV Shows ...
I even went so far as to call my local Best Buy to see if they had HD DVD TV Sets on sale...no.
AFAIK, after the 30% off sale that ends this month, Best Buy was going to return all HD DVD software to the manufacturers for full credit.
Is the HD DVD TV LCD?
No promo like this in the BestBuy in Union, New Jersey . . . yet. However since I work there I will be transmitting this info to my managers, maybe they'll hop on this idea.
P.S. They mean TV series sets/ TV shows and collections; not the actual TVs.
Jeesus Christ, people! Can i get a big.....DURRRRRRRRRRR??
I only clicked through to this entry b/c it said 70% off TV sets! Way to be misleading.
@Dook_In_The_Urinal: Durrrrr! The header is a bit misleading I must say.
wow. that was amusing. thanks to all who commented about the HD DVD TV sets. IM IN FOR THREE!!
this is a great sale. but it would mean shopping at best buy. pass.
$10 isn't all that cheap to me. Most movies make no difference in HD so why bother. Especially with older moves. You would think I someone wanted a movie like 5 years a go they would have in in DVD already and now you want to get them to by another HD copy? Why do you need "30 Year Old Virgin" in HD is beyond me unless it is the same price as the DVD.
Same problem Blu-ray will have.
Also, since HD-DVD is dead why not just sell the lot for their cost to make them disappear?
"But your YMMV."
Wouldn't that be "But your your milage may vary?"
Didnt someone build a set with a player (not sure if it was hdor standard def) built in?
@fastm3driver: The 30 Year Old Virgin is not as good, I agree.
so what does a tv series on hddvd come to after 70% off? I also agree that these priced aren't low enough, considering that I buy most of my DVDs at around the same price point by waiting for sales.
The other day my wife and me going to best buy to look for a car radio. We walk by the rows and rows of HD TV. The TV stars on the show looks worst than me. HD TV converts all the sitcom shows to horror TV shows. I think I will hold off buying a HD TV until fountain of youth is found.
Might have to swing by on the way home, see if Trek Season 1 is on sale.
For a friend, of course.
Yeah they are TV shows box sets not TV sets...even that will be awesome.
@cardboardbelt: I swear it felt like that movie lasted 10 years before anything happened.
I found the "TV Sets" bit confusing at first until I read the article and figured out what they were talking about.
@many: When in doubt, check the source article.
I admit, I thought "TV Sets 70 Percent Off" meant a discount on the hardware. That's the only reason I read the rest of this post. =(
Wish this was going on here. Spokane, WA still just 30% off... Still more than what they are on amazon...
But look at all those 10 dollar Bourne Ultimatium combo sets...
You dumb bastards just kill me...TOO fuNNy for prime time...TV eps...duh
Circuit City has had a sale on HD DVDs for weeks now. Some for $5.99. Still not worth it.
Best Buys in the Dallas are all out of HD DVDs. Completely and totally out. Oh, and by the way... BB employees were not too bright today. Two separate stores told me they had movies available and both had nothing. Great...
Best Buy in Mountain view has NO HD-DVD's in stock at all. They're all gone, and not on sale.
Best Buy's in the Boston area do not have any, they packed them all into boxes in the back room, and have said "we're told ship them back to the supplier"
Same story at all 3 locations I went to today
Hmm i actually went into the dublin store today and their was no such sale..They said they cleared the hddvd stock already with a confused look on their face. "Wait you're looking for hd-dvds?"
Messages went out to some stores this morning saying pull all, do not sell any of them from here on out. They're supposed to be packed up to ship back. My store had a table of them, and it had to be pulled.
As soon as I saw this I went to Best Buy and they told me they already sent all the HD DVD back to the manufacturer all the shelves where they were are now empty. This is in Tampa, FL So I went to Circuit City, again empty shelves where they were, I asked about it and they said come back Sunday morning for the fire sale of them all so I'm thinking maybe best buy will be doing the same thing.
I went to Walmart also but they are still full price there but said they would match circuit city's price.
I've been waiting for retailers to mark those down for months, though now that it's finally happening, I just don't care.
Screw you retailers. You had your chance.
Now I'll just have something to look for at garage sales and flea markets for the rest of my life.
@fastm3driver:
"Especially with older movies..."
oddly enough - a lot of the older movies have BETTER hd transfers than newer movies (check out some reviews on blade runner and the "ancient" 2001: a space odyssey) - and, as crazy as it seems, there are plenty of people who dont own every single sd-dvd that has ever been released
for people who have hd-dvd players that havent purchased the entire catalog of sd-dvd movies, why not get those movies youre interested in on hd-dvd format for cheaper than the sd-dvd versions? (and keep in mind, you can still use your hd-dvd player as one of the better upscalers for sd-dvds)
@fastm3driver: "Especially with older movies...". Right, and let me guess, you have a "source" that says the Vu is coming out in a month, Blu-ray Disc drives will be $149 and...Oh, fuck it. TFSU!
@cardboardbelt: If you think "the 30 year old virgin" was bad, don't bother watching "the 15 year old virgin" as the plot was rather uneventful.
Well I went to serveral Best Buy's in the Tampa Bay (Florida) area and ALL had already sent back their HD DVD's to the warehouse.
Now Circuit City this past sunday did a 50% off sale, that matched with price matching from a local walmart that still sells HD DVD's I was able to pick up about 100 HD-DVD movies most of them being less then $15 each some as low as $5.
