@Johnny Chimpo: Not going to happen for at least 4 years or so. When the iPhone came out Apple also announced a 5 year exclusive deal with AT&T. I seriously AT&T will let them out of that deal, especially since AT&T has been quickly expanding their 3G coverage across the US since the iPhone came out.

@IphtashuFitz: I highly doubt that ATT would let Apple use creating a new version of the iPhone as a loophole to their exclusivity clause; however, I also doubt that ATT would stifle innovation for 5 years to keep that exclusivity. By then the iPhone will be either obsolete or a commodity.

Most likely if Apple releases and update to the iPhone, it will be under the duration of the 5 year clause.

Forget 3G. There isn't enough 3G coverage in the US to justify the tech. My city doesn't have 3G and ATT does not plan on bringing me 3G, but I do have Edge, and, you know what, so does everywhere else.

No 3G is a non-starter for me on the iPhone. I can even get over the lack of buttons, but crippled with EDGE? I can't do it.

Actually, OLED is used on the outer screen of most cellphones, included the Razr.

Yes they do! The Powerbooks had an S-Video out that no one uses. Apple gambles on technology like nobody's business. They had Firewire 2 ports on laptops when the whole industry was running USB 2 to everything. Heck there wasn't even any Express Card drivers or devices when the first MacBookPro came out with an Express Card slot.

OLEDs seem to cost 4-5 times what an equivalent LCD would cost. Not that much I suppose.. the component cost of the iphone's LCD is listed at around $25, so an extra $100 or so for OLED.

In other parts of the world, 3G is the norm and the iPhone needs to have 3G in order to properly cater for the sophisticated cellphone markets in Europe and Asia

I have an Iphone and I could CARE LESS about 3G - I had a palm treo with 3G and the browser was so clunky I never used it... and when I did try out streaming video, it drained my battery in 20 minutes... no thanks..

Also, The apple iPhone accounts for 70% of ALL mobile web browsing... 3G is a non issue. I wouldn't be a bit surprised at all if apple leapfrogs 3g and implements something really cool like WiMAX (3G = 1.5 mbps, Wimax = 45 mbps)

The iphone needs to support WiFi A/B/G/N, have real GPS functionality (A CHIP PLEASE) with local google search - as well as 3G, and an auto-fuckus camera.

Well we already know if the next gen iphone hits the sprint pipelines sprint users and iphone users on sprint are going to be loving those wimax speeds and even the evdo speeds. Sprint is super fast and probably going to be one of the fastest companies now all they need to do is fix their customer service and upgrade their voice network

@SneakerFiend: Uh... Sorry buddy, the next iPhone (or the one after that, and the one after that) will probably not be on Sprint. Not ONLY because of the 5 year exclusive deal with AT&T, but Sprint (along with verizon) is CDMA technology. iPhone, along with the rest of the world, is GSM technology. That said, I highly doubt they will change out the entire connection of the iphone just to jump over to "Sprint Speed."

And yes, they need to upgrade thier voice network, my brother in law has sprint and he can't make a voice call worth shit, anywhere or anyplace.

The reason PowerBooks had S-Video is b/c it was very useful for presentation at the time, but it's pretty much dead, so they stopped using it a long time ago. FireWire has many advantages over USB 2, most of all a steady data stream that USB doesn't do, it's just the way it was designed (by Apple, et al) (check wiki) which is very important for high datarate video feeds from video cameras. Not a gamble, but a request from the industry. Express Card is hardly a gamble either. You probably still use a token ring network. If no one manufactures it, then no one will buy it. You should be thanking companies like Apple.

I would like to see an LED backlit LCD, ie- the new iPods (non-Touch) and the MacBookPro. If Apple doesn't include something that seems obvious or cool, then there is normally a good reason for it. Everyone wishes everything had a few more things to make it perfect. I think of improvements for a lot of things everyday. But 99% of them will never come to light. (I want Blu-Ray in my MacPro, for movies, not just data... still waiting...)
