Vestax Guber CM-02 USB Turntable Really Something

Despite having crates and crates of vinyl, I am too lazy (and too strapped for space) to shell out for a USB turntable. Another reason is that most of them look like shite. But this one, the Vestax Guber CM-02, is gorgeous. Delishy-wishy. It totally poops on last week's non-usb, acrylic home-made versions (sorry Mike) and, oh, I've got a warm feeling this Friday morning and am going to think about that weekend I'll spend converting all my old 12" into files when I buy this. DJ Deals has it for $499, but our buds over the pond at Gizmodo Japan say it's on for $233. [Gizmodo Japan through Google Translate]

  • Weird. Is that pitch control a dial? 'Haven't seen a dial pitch control on a turntable since the early 90's...

Crazy Google translate on the link. :)

  • I bought a turntable about 3 years ago with pitch control (the strobe light thingy). Then my old receiver died and needed to replace it-- but nothing now has a phono input, so I bought a separate phono amp to pass it to my sound system. The amp also had a PC audio output for ripping. Pretty cool. Still works great.

  • Why do no new record players have dust covers? I'm glad my parents' old Fisher still works.

  • Very cool, I still buy vinyl when I can find it. Digital music is great but there is something about that crackling and distortion that only analog can produce, I love it.

"analog reel and a little distortion, scorchcin so hot you can say I'm smokin."

  • Its not a real Dj turntable unless it has direct drive and not belt drive. Can't really tell from the photo but it almost looks like it has a gear to drive the turntable. Wonder how it would hold up in the club mixing JZ's American Ganster?

  • Excellent translation or the source article.
    "Perhaps it boom," indeed.

  • I'm going to violate my cardinal law (assume nothing) and presume that the platter is actually glass and the screws are countersunk. Either that or this comes with a mat of some sort. There's no way they would make this thing with a plastic platter and round head screws poking out of its surface...would they?

Aside from that...I wonder how much the overhanging platter would throw off skratching. Pssssh, no one's buyin' this for skratching.

  • it has to be a pain to scratch on since the glass platter adds weight- too much resistance

  • A DJ turntable for scratching and a turntable for digitizing your record collection have pretty different requirements.

The current gold standard for digitizing vinyl is a high-end turntable-arm-cartridge->phono stage plugged into a Korg DSD recorder, with each LP first run through a vacuum record cleaner. I wonder if there are traders of the resulting files. Why bother digitizing your own vinyl collection if someone else has done a better job?
