Boy Genius has details on "Manilla," the code name for HTC's TouchFLO replacement interface coming on some of their Windows Mobile 6.1 smartphones. There's the improved home screen (above), as well as the improved dialer screens, skinning of the browser and skinning of the comm manager. Our intern tells us that a bunch of these new skins were already seen in gradual updates in some of the newer devices that are out already, such as the Touch Cruise, but "Manilla" seems to be a TouchFLO 2.0 that brings all the updates together. Boy Genius has more. [Boy Genius Report]

If only it were easier to tell what time it is.
Is there someone out there that likes their clocks to be displayed in 90's style LED sections? Is that somehow more readable than say, Arial Font?
Why the fuck would you display the time like that? Is it the 1980's ?
I have this home screen on my xv6700 running PPCKitchen's wm6.1 rom... it actually looks way better on the actual phone. I think it's pretty cool...to each his own i guess.
@bpatten: Iactually like it. You can change it if you really want but I left it.
God, that time display is tacky.
@lpranal: I thought so, I'd like to have a home screen like that on my WiMo device. But simulating something inferior with superior means is never a good idea.
Too bad you can't put it into 24hr or millitary time mode. Considering there is no cross bar for dislpaying a 2 on the left most time digit. Oh well.
@bpatten: @awesomerobot: You can change the font and color and size of the clock, or have it show a traditional round face or just remove it. its alot of options and customizations that you dont find in any other smartphone.
Personally, I like it. I'm sure there will be other visual options on how to display the time, but this one looks kinda neat.
HTC Home Customizer can change the clock to just about anything you want. I do like the new Comm Manager. I dont like the white box on the call screen but i do like the big red end call button.
@awesomerobot:
Surely, you are not that uncool!

I have a Touch Cruise (love the phone BTW) and that's pretty much what my home screen looks like. It's customizable, including hiding it completely if you really hate it that much.
@awesomerobot: Made this homescreen for my Blackjack using the old school LED clock. I love it!

Soooooooo soooooo UGLY. Complete FAIL. iPhone UI FTW.
@DMcGrew:
I second that. But I also believe "to each his own". If people wanna keep using that sorry excuse for a UI, let them dude.
Yeah...if you can afford the iPhone, if you don't mind the lack of 3G, if you don't mind the package price of the service, if you don't mind the small storage capacity, if you don't mind the big up-front cost of the headset itself...yeah...it's great. ;-]
Most of the people that customize their HTC phones have the same clock. I don't mind it and it's actually pretty useful since it's so big. The thing to remember about the HTC custom ROM users is that we tend to be a little geekier than most so this kind of thing is fine for us. As for a comparison with an iPhone I have to say there really isn't much of one as the target is much different, I can just do so much more with my TyTn than with an iPhone. The iPhone does beat it hands down though in terms of design. I however use my phone for a mobile wifi hot spot, streaming video, streaming internet radio, watching my home tv, watching Mobitv for free, listening to XM radio for free ,using TomTom for gps, and using pocket scrobbler for streaming last.fm. It's a lot of fun and offers a ton of fucntionality so it largely comes down to what you want to do with your phone. The only thing I need now for me to do my entire job on the phone is a LivePerson client.
@KingBoo:
Well put.
Just because tha iPhone hardware and GUI are so stunningly elegant and beautifully designed I think it's easy to lose sight of it's underwhelming capabilities vis a vis HTC Smartphones.
I am optimistic that once iPhone becomes enterprise-ready it'll finally gain the vast acceptance it deserves.
@KingBoo: Curious how you pulled off the free XM. I have the Tilt and the native XM Radio app that came with mine requires a $9/month subscription. Do you have some kind of hack or an alternate app? LMK. Thx!
In case you are contemplating on getting an HTC TyTN II (aka AT&T Tilt), I am one of the many unfortunate users who experience the "Red LED of Death".

@SchruteBuck:
i lol'd
Hey at least it's 3G.
I know this because it says so in 3 friggin places.
Screw the iPhone.
I like the pics. and i like how the pictures get a small preview and they get zoomed in a bit more than the rest of them.
Too bad my phone doesnt have touchflo i dont want to put it on there and mess up the whole phone. =/
I like the grayed-out, "unlit" LCD segments. That's kind of brilliant.
@lpranal: Do you actually have that exact home screen on your 6700 or just the standard HTC homescreen that comes with the PPCKitchen's wm6.1 rom? If so how.... I am very interested.
Kingboo, as one who sounds like you woefully underestimate the inherent power of a phone that runs Mac OS X, let me refute some of the things your phone can do as opposed to my phone: "The iPhone does beat it hands down though in terms of design." -This is true. I'm surprised you can so readily acknowledge it. "I however use my phone for a mobile wifi hot spot" - iPhone owners can already do this. All it requires is a jailbroken iPhone and knowledge. "streaming video, streaming internet radio, watching my home tv" - can already do this too. Without hacking. "watching Mobitv for free, listening to XM radio for free ,using TomTom for gps," -I have no idea what the hell Mobitv is, but I'm up to date on iPhone apps and the like and have never heard of this so as much as I know, we can't do this. Nor the XM Radio thing, nor the TomTom thing. But honestly, once June comes around and applications flood this device, do you still think that inability will hold? "and using pocket scrobbler for streaming last.fm"- I've been doing this for the last couple months. Though I'm actually surprised you do as well because then that means you actually listen to music from that phone....Surpising. "It's a lot of fun and offers a ton of fucntionality so it largely comes down to what you want to do with your phone." - I completely agree with this statement. I just happen to be a little more knowledgeable about WHAT an iPhone is really capable of.
@KingBoo: Thought I quoted you dude...Comment to you above.
Since I see a big END CALL button, I can only assume all or some of these screenshots are not for WM Smartphone (aka WM Standard, the one with no touchscreen).
@TheSonOfKrypton: Dude, I don't think you really defended your thesis. "Woefully underestimate the inherent power of the iphone"
When you go on to say:
"I have no idea what the hell Mobitv is, but I'm up to date on iPhone apps and the like and have never heard of this so as much as I know, we can't do this. Nor the XM Radio thing, nor the TomTom thing."
Makes it sound more like you LIKE your iphone better than the tilt, not that its power has been so woefully underestimated.
I have a tilt and I like it. But this whole interface thing is kinda lame. WM has been skinnable since the beginning [www.littlethemes.com] is a great place for free sknis which are much prettier than this. (warning: they have a commercial for that MLM social network site on your way to little themes should you click that link)
Not a UI change I know, but still... why bother skinning your Explorer when you run it in full screen mode? You are running in full screen right?
And since I just got back from browsing the screenshot gallery I saw no discernible difference in the phone appearance and the comm manager looks worse not better.
Even though I already have this earlier UI ready to install I think I am going to take a pass.
I love how Mac/iPhone fanboys can't abide dissenting opinions. If I said "Macs suck and you are a tool." I can reasonably expect to get flamed, and rightly so.
But when people say things like "I have a WM phone and I really love it, I have played around with iPhones and just don't really like them, the "elegant" IU treats me like I am mentally handicapped and I don't appreciate that." The fanboys actually seem to become more enraged by comments like that tham if the person had launched an arbitrary ad hominem attack...
It seems that Apple has already managed to develop and deploy some form of stealth "thought policing" of its customers... And more interesting still, it promotes an evangelistic predisposition to taking it upon themselves to attack any dissent...
I have had a T-Mobile MDA for more than two years, yeah its not very fast, and not uber stable. But through hacked roms and wise management of resources I have made it serve nearly all of my needs to a T. But alas I am upgrading to a Tilt shortly (can't wait to hack the rom and unlock it to work w/ my T-Mob service). NEVER PAY SOMEONE TO UNLOCK AN HTC handset, just hit up XDAdevelopers!
Wow Aqua !
@Jasontrainer: I see how you misunderstood my statement Jason. As much as I believe what I believe, I try to be as unbiased and fair as I can be. That's why I clearly stated that, as far as I know, iPhones can do that stuff. But, you'd be a fool to believe that it's because "it lacks the power". No. As I went on to say, it's simply because applications like that have been far to big for the "Jailbreak community" to undertake, and that that inability will be quickly nullified once June comes around and everyone and they mama becomes besieged by the amount of applications out for one phone.
To truly believe that the iPhone can't run applications like that is to hold yourself up to the highest standards of ignorance. This thing is a Mac that just happens to make phone calls. Make no mistake about it.
Sorry, meant to say "That's why I clearly stated that, as far as I know, iPhones CAN'T do that stuff."
ugh, is that WKTask? Me
HTC Task ftw
@TheSonOfKrypton: I find it quite sad that the only way for you to do anything on your iphone, it must be hacked. I can do ANYTHING and 100x more than you can do on your pretty iphone, with my HTC. I don't have to "Jailbreak" anything and the people who design my phone and OS actually support us in making our own software and being creative. I can't say the same for our great friends over at Apple who lock up anything they have so that it lacks tons of features and then toss a ridiculous price on it so the only people who buy it are snotty rich people who think they are better than the rest of us.
When that SDK comes out don't fool yourself to believe Apple is going to allow you to do anything with your phone or design any applications. You will still need to "Jailbreak" it to run many applications with features Apple doesn't want you to have. They try to strictly control everything you do on anything they make.
@TheSonOfKrypton: Can your jailbroken iPhone take Video? Can you upgrade the storage space with a new memory card whenever you wish? How 'bout GPS, does your iPhone have that? Handwriting recognition? 3G? A2DP stereo Bluetooth?
The sad fact is that the iPhone is nothing more than tech jewelry. Pretty to look at but does next to nothing when compared to other phones.
oh yeah... pointui seems to still take the crown for WM UIs.
More paint on this ever gilded turd.
