Remember we laughed at the concept Reppo2 boombox backpack, and its ability to aurally assault those you walk past with your choice of tunes? Well, yes: something similar is now real, courtesy of these Fi-Hi novelty bags with built-in speakers and amp. What's there to say? Well, we don't know how powerful the audio system is, we don't know if they're weatherproof (though we'd hope so.) But we do know you can connect up your MP3 player, that they're in a wide range of different sizes and styles, some looking very much like the Reppo2, and that they're fascinatingly nasty. No word on pricing or availability, but expect to hear one soon. [Aving]

Osiris came out with something like this in 2002 [www.g4tv.com]
My friend has a spiderman backpack with speakers in it. Don't know when it's from, probably the 90's or early 2000's, while the idea is kinda cool, nice for riding bikes. Mind you I think he picked it up from value village for ten bucks or something.
Not to mention these things might actually look worse. I mean come on a tape deck theme? I mean I liked my boombox and walkman in the 80's and 90's and all, but as soon as I could record on cd, and then leave cd behind I was done with tapes. Sure it was almost iconic of the 80's and all, but it kinda sucked.
It's "its."
Kids around here have the volume so high on their headphones you can hear the music loud enough just by standing near them - they don't need external speakers.
I did once screw a set of battery powered computer speakers to my bike - was great on long runs in the country.
@sparx104: You did that too?
Nice! I loved riding with tunes.
These, however, look like crap and will no doubt sound same.
@kvasi: Get a better hobby.
If I saw one of these in the pouring rain - i'd be happier.
I can't wait to ride the bus and hate the asshole who owns this.
It's bad enough when punks have their cellphone out and listen to the 20 sec clip of the shitty track that's hot for this month.
Material is bulletproof ?
Between this and joker's on their cellphones, it'll be like living in a karaoke world.
Boombox backpack: you can be a douche anywhere, anytime! Not just at college when you point your speakers out the window so everyone can hear what you're listening to.
Shitheads.
iHome makes a nice waterproof speaker for biking that goes right in a waterbottle holder. If you ever use this backpack for anything other than biking I would have to call you an asshole, since you can use an existing pack and any number of speaker docks on the market today (since if you are using this in a hanging out setting you can just as easily take the speakers out of the bag). I'm waiting on my Vestalife Ladybug to come in the mail, it fits in my various bags with room to spare, takes 4 double a batteries with around 6-8 hours of life, and has great sound for the price.
This would go over really well up in the Bronx.
I could see my old high school having a shit fit over this_
"Okay! So we have a ban on boom-boxes and other loud audio projecting devices_ But the students need their back-packs to carry their stuff - like all the books and notebooks and paperworks and hand-outs and pencils and what-not that we demand they carry for no apparent reason other than teaching them the value of carrying a load of heavy shit_ But if we ban 1 type of book bag we must ban all book bags otherwise it might be discriminatory and Politically Incorrect_ But if we ban book bags then how are the kids going to carry all that crap we demand they carry around?"
And so the paradox begins...
i'm thinking that it should only be sold in pink, so when you heard a douche playing this in public, you would have instant visual confirmation
See Beamz,similar douchability, will interconnect for portable male bonding high five sessions!
