Simplify Media Mobile For iPhone Lets You Stream iTunes Libraries Over Wi-Fi

Simplify Media's just released a new version of their Mobile suite for iPhone that lets you stream iTunes libraries from your friends across the internet. It works in much the same way the desktop version does. Load up Simplify Media on a desktop with a library that you want to share, then log into your Simplify Media Mobile on your iPhone (with Wi-Fi) and you can stream all of your and your friends' music back over the air.

If you really want to stream on the go, without Wi-Fi, you could probably rig up a Wi-Fi internet connection sharing thing with a Windows Mobile phone as well.

We tested it over Wi-Fi and it streamed back all of Adam Pash's songs without a problem (eventually). It crashed and hung the first couple times. [Simplify Media]

  • So, you have to (jail)break your iPhone to use this? That's crap!

  • This seems like something that would be very slow. Dont think its worth it

  • Looks sooo slow

  • Karooshi porn? Whaaaaa? This is really B.A.
I hope we see this in the App Store.

  • Jason, Adam, sorry about that hang. The app is a little temperamental right after install while it builds its database and caches your file lists. After that, you should be good to go - and this is something we'll have fixed for the firmware 1.2/2.0 version.

  • sweetness.

reminds me of iPhone remote except with iPhone remote you can stream music AND videos from your iTunes library. Also, it allows you to take snap shots with your isight camera and control your desktop remotely among other things.

Took awhile to configure iPhone remote so that it would work outside my LAN, but once I did, it was one of the coolest things ever. Haven't been able to get it working since upgrading to leopard though. This seems like it would be a little easier to set up.

Why doesn't it support the cellular data network like EDGE or upcoming 3G?

  • I'll be all over this once it's doesn't require jailbreaking.

  • @Galley: "I'll be all over this once it's doesn't require jailbreaking."

There is no way you'll be able to get functionality like this through the App Store. Apple will never distribute an application like this.

  • He (the guy talking in the video) sounds overwhelmingly happy and relaxed for some reason......

    freaks me out...

  • @phoomp: The only thing I see this app does that couldn't be implemented as a web page, is the background playing of music. No need for jailbreak or App Store for this. And the only thing it does that would make Apple not put it in the App Store is let you share your music with other people. But with the iPhone SDK you can't make apps run in the background.

  • i wish this would allow you to the iphone as a remote for iTunes i.e. Signal, so i wouldnt have to spend 30 friggin dollars.

  • @yoshi: "Why doesn't it support the cellular data network like EDGE or upcoming 3G?"

What do you think 'streamed music' would be like over Edge? I've got a clue for you and it rhymes with 'crap.'

  • @bitfactory: Wait, so it would rhyme with 'crap'? So would it be like...rap? Or maybe Goldfrapp? Why would everything over 3G sound like rap?

Ohh, you meant it would actually be crap. Not rhyme with it. Good work.

  • re: EDGE, we spent a while working on an EDGE version. It sounded great through the iPhone's speaker (not so great with headphones). The unfortunate part was that it was quite sensitive to signal strength. We are looking forward to 3G and learning what Apple will allow developers to do.

  • @paul: "We are looking forward to 3G and learning what Apple will allow developers to do."

Not too concerned about a 3G version but if Apple will let you sell this on the official app store once iPhone's 2.0 firmware goes public, I would pay $20-$30 for a service like this. Perhaps even up to $50 USD. Seriously, that's a kick ass app. Turns your iPhone into a network media server like the SqueezeBox, but portable!

  • WINAMP REMOTE...been doing this

    www.winamp.com

  • also...because of the remote winamp it makes me getting a 8gb or 16gb irrelevant because both ways I will have all my music
