Kohijinsha SR8KPO6S is 7-Inch UMPC With Optical Drive

Kohjinsha-SR8KPO6S-01.jpgThe Kohijinsha SR8KPO6S fits a DVD burner into its tiny, 9.2 x 7 x 1.3 inch chassis. As if that were not enough to stick it in the Eee's face, the 7-inch (1024 x 600) display also boasts touchscreen functionality, an 800Mhz CPU, 60GB HDD, Wi-Fi g support and weighs in at 2.4lbs.

The battery will supposedly last somewhere north of three hours, but we wouldn't be so sure of the claim. The UMPC runs Vista, and also has tablet PC mode support. Still, a comparison to the Eee is probably a little unfair considering the Kohijinsha surely costs a fair bit more, even if we have no word on pricing as yet. [Ubergizmo]

  • And why would you want vista on an 800MHz processor?

  • @Ounce:

Because the voices told them to.

But seriously, XP would be better considering MS have given in and allowed it to continue to be sold on UMPCs.

  • Is a DVD burner really necessary on an ultra portable? Sure the drive is great for watching movies but 90 mins later it's going to crap out anyway...

  • on a brochure from KJS at the Spring Taipei Computer Show a few weeks ago, with a standard battery, it only run for 2.5h.

the price is NT$34,900 for the model without tv tuner and NT$37,900 for the one with tv tuner. both models use 80gb hdd though.

@Barfolemew: Unless you're in a location with a power outlet. You'd be surprised at the amount of laptops that just don't last watching a feature length film on DVD on a full charge, even if they're brand new.

    Yow.
Who is going to get the least amount of work done on this thing?
The specs are cool and all, and it's not a bad looker, but SHEESH it seems like loading drivers is gonna be that thing's main priority for about 2 minutes if not more unless it's in standby.
    Optical-Schmoptical.
I'm getting ready to order a USB enclosure for a nice little laptop DVD burner drive I've had laying around.
Anything remotely modern would be able to install an OS over USB from it, and it can stay stashed somewhere.
I'm really not digging the sub-Ghz CPU...No I'm sorry dawg, I gotta say no.

    Simon?

  • Or when you're traveling and need to burn those pictures/videos to make space...

  • THIS IS WHAT THE EEE SHOULD BE!

just nix the optical drive and Vista (Hell, I'd be ok with swapping out the HD for a small SSD), and I'd buy it for 400-500.

  • You can't compare this to the EEE... the EEE is ultraCHEAP umpc, as this is an ultraEXPENSIVE umpc, or at least that's what I'd like to guess :/

I read the name and immediately thought rice cooker.

  • @awesomerobot: Personally the DVD is one thing missing from the Eee. I agree about vista though.

  • I've got a similar model without the optical drive, and it's actually pretty good, running XP though.

Good enough to watch a movie while traveling or surfing the net while taking a dump ;p

  • First of all, the manufacturer is spelled Kohjinsha, not Kohijinsha

Second, the bottom promo in this link from their website has the price for this model:

    About $1600

  • Did you hear that, it just said to macbook air "IN YOUR FACE"

  • @awesomerobot:

"just nix the optical drive and Vista (Hell, I'd be ok with swapping out the HD for a small SSD), and I'd buy it for 400-500."

hahah yeah and maybe i'll win the lottery today and lose 10 pounds. of course this thing would sell like crazy if they did the things that you suggest (as i'm guessing all of us are basically thinking about the same things that sony would have to do to this to make it sell like hotcakes) but they wont because they're sony.

A beautiful thing like that with a touch screen? i'll up what you said by saying that they should take out any moving parts, make it relatively resistant to the various elements it would be exposed to and bring it down to a reason price (because you know that this thing is going to be about 1500 +) and you'd have a really popular machine.

I'm guessing that this machine is aimed more towards businesses or at least people who travel alot. Oh well...i guess i will just have to wait for a company to see the obvious, and produce an equally beautiful machine with all the right specs.

  • 800 MHz and Vista? That's not going to end well...

  • There is already a youtube video review.
    Here is the link

  • Lots of things can be had for $1600.

Few laptops can be had for $400 though -- especially that small.

    D.

    @glowplug: Cool, thanks!

Makes me want it a little bit more.

  • Just checked the websites on the video and both kabatek.com and conics.net have it for about $1350. Now if it had BlueRay instead of a DVD-RW...

  • @glowplug: the processor wouldn't be nearly powerful enough to play bluray....

    ---
also, the "older" model I got, was for about 500$, don't think I'd give out that much just for having the bonus optical drive...

  • Remove the DVD burner and add SDHC slots and boom you have ultra portable WIN.

  • It's Kohjinsha, not Koh-I-jinsha. No wonder I couldn't search for this.

  • And it has and Optical Drive!!!

  • @darex: Lots of things can be had for $1600.
Cin failed to mention that the link shows the price in SGD dollars. Coverted to USD, that's approximately US$1,180 (inclusive of 7% SG VAT).

Not too bad for a UMPC packing a built-in optical drive, 1GB Ram and a Windows O/S, arguably one of its most expensive components. But like others have already said, 800Mhz is not a good choice for Vista. Wait for the XP version.

  • it has an optical drive? wow its already better than the macbook air :P

  • @Barfolemew: Well jeah but im sure that you'd probably have an airport extreme kind of adapter on this thing so you could charge it on the plane or somewhere else where there is a laptop jack.
But jeah i think the tablet pc mode is super good because that way you could put it in tablet pc mode and watch a full screen movie and enjoy the full movie on a flat surface instead of having to hold the umpc up like if it was a full laptop.
