It looks like the PS3 is finally getting some hot mod love from console modding's reigning wizard, Ben Heck. We don't really have all the details since he hasn't announced the project yet, but the display looks like it's the one he used for the Xbox 360 Elite laptop, for a true 720p picture. He's obviously been leveling up his already formidable powers though, 'cause this is one of his most polished projects yet. There's another shot from the side after the jump. Update: Turns out, we stumbled onto a special project for Engadget to auction off for charity! If you'd like to own this bad boy, more details are here, or at Ben's site. [Ben Heck, Thanks Wallop]

That's AWESOME.
Where do I sign up to have Ben make me stuff?!
Gorgeous laptop. Unfortunate he did not mod the controller, though. I won't hold it against him, though. Not even Sony did much of that between the different Playstations.
i'd pay good money for that. He does really good work. I don't think id have the patients for that.
I wonder if he sells any of his mods.
This guy is a monster. That things looks aaaawesome.
Any chance he can mod the OLED screen on this thing?
Sony should pay him to design this thing for mass production. That's a Playstation Portable.
The man is a genious. That thing is so very sexy. I'd put my fingerprints all over it, then meticulously wipe them all off and do it again.
I enjoyed the 360 laptop video through the link as well.
Wow, this guy truly is the master, I doubt some PS3 engineers at sony could easily pull that off...
@Metaljaw: I know I don't have the patients...I wish I had patients, then I'd have money for charging them astronomical fees. I'm sorry, I truly am, I don't want to be grammar nazi, but you're looking for a totally different word.
Either way, Ben Hack is always incredible.
Wish he could add the webcam on the lcd bezel, that would be make it a ridicluous. Throw in linux and it everything you want in a gameing laptop.
Amazing! Another Ben Heck project FTW!
I'm incredibly surprised that nobody has offered this man a six figure job in a high profile company yet.
great work, but seriously, it looks kind of ugly. slap a coat of black glossy paint and then we're talkin.
NOW thats SEXY!!
Hey ben, nice job, but how about a rat version. Maybe flat black with some pinstipes?
@Monty:
No, but you can get him to put the PS3 guts into a 360 controller... he needs to mass market those babies! Hey Giz, find out how much he charges to do the controller swap!
I'd like to take his work seriously, but--my gawd!--a little screen cleaner, please, before you present your work to the world? Maybe show some pride in workmanship? I've seen fewer fingerprints in a room full of jam-handed toddlers.
Not only is this useful as a PS3 for maybe on the go or to show off, but with the PS3's Linux capabilities this is actual useful as a laptop aswell, Damn good man, damn good.
There goes Bens site.
@bosskev: jam handed toddlers now thats creative writing!
@GOKOR: lol, hey grammer nazi, its Heck, with an "e"
damn irony.
And like the real PS3, the thing attracts fingerprints like moths to a flame.
looks great. like it! Linux included?
but i doubt it'll be as truly reliable as a normal PS3. you know, because of all the vents.
@Akmed
My thoughts exactly! This is actually a possibility as far as production could go through Sony in that it would work as a powerful laptop. What a concept, a true convergence between console and computer (+portability).
Laptop!? Great work but thats about as far from a laptop as my desktop is.
@Monty: If it ain't broke...
@BigViper:
From the "Giving Credit Where Credit Is Due" department:
It's actually a phrase borrowed from "The Gilmore Girls", as delivered by a flustered Luke. "I don't even like kids. They always have jam on their hands. Even when there isn't any jam in the house, they get jam on their hands. I can't deal with jam hands."
She looks a little thick when compared...

:'(i wish he would sell these. id buy one
It's hard to believe he got that fatass in that case.
Be forewarned: Ben Heck's site kust triggered a trojan warning from Avast when I went to look at his page, and I got a notification in IE that the page was trying to load a Microsoft Remote Data Services Active X control.
That's a lot of dust on that controller.
What? No Playstation Eye? No Mouse? I'm not discrediting this guy, but if he can put a power supply into a laptop case with a 360, and also somehow make a keyboard work with it, he should be able to put a trackpad and camera/microphone into it.
Also, what's with the controller? Is he storing it in his air conditioner vents?
pretty cool...but my question is how long does the battery last?
@RaepGoblin: Imagine if the game controller WAS the mouse! That would be sweet.
@Arsenal6: No way would you want to bother playing with this thing off of a plug for a long period of time
needless to say that this is purely a keep-plugged-in device.
Engadget will be auctioning it off for charity soon:

@greg3d: Oh, is that so. Wheeeee.
True 720p picture. WTF? Last time I checked the PS3 can push out 1080 just fine!
I have to say i disagree with most of you concerning the looks.
Although it is obviously VERY well made, I can't say it looks attractive.
But hey, "let gouts et les couleurs..."
yeah frickin sweet, and they are auctioning it off at engadget
[www.engadget.com]
where are you people getting "amazing" from?
it's huge and looks fan made.
almost like a bad photoshop come alive
@roker:
Of course it's huge. You've seen a PS3 before haven't you? He did an amazing job just to get it that small AND add a screen and keyboard.
@EBone: I don't know how well that would sell as a "Portable" its a brick.
This would be cool to take on trips. And I mean while you are in the hotel room. Since most hotels have 25" or less SDTVs in them.
kudos - who is paying for his time to go do this? it's very good work - funded by Sony?
needs input for full size TV.
Otherwise beautiful work.
I wish he could find a suitable battery setup. If only for a 2 hour train ride.
maybe a half hour one
I think he did a great job on this. Technically it's not a laptop though. I wouldn't put that thing on my lap. Table-top: sure. Also, the design is OK, nothing reminiscent of the PS3 hardware, except for the black. But he is a true talent, as I don't think anyone could do much better.
Pimp My PS3!
@theespacepope: Actually, I prefer to stay at the Radisson, and they have 27 in HDTV's now... that's what I hook my Xbox into. Not like any of the channels are actually HD, but hey, it's a start.
