As the Second Coming of the JesusPhone looms over the horizon, the rumor pace starts to accelerate, with people digging in the dirt to try to get any clues about what's awaiting in this incarnation of Apple's cellphone. StuffTV is now reporting that—just like Jason wanted—Nike+ will definitely come to the iPhone in a big way, while code detectives have found strings that hint at support of Bluetooth stereo headphones, GPS support, and other iPhone seeeeeecrets:
First, StuffTV went to Nike's HQ in Oregon and got "official" word on Nike+ iPhone from the winged footwear maker. The fully exploit the graphic capabilities of the iPhone, Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity to provide Nike+ applications to go, including the Nike+ Coach feature. No surprises here, as previous strings found in the code of the iPhone 1.2.0 beta firmware talked about Nike+. According to Greek iPhone site "IPhone Hellas," however, those strings are gone from the latest version. They, on the other side, found the following:
• There is as string that says "HeadphonesBT"—as opposed to the current "HeadsetBT"— as well as "RoleA2DP" which could indicate Bluetooth stereo headphones support in this release.
• There's a string called "RoleGPS" which may indicate GPS support.
• New "RoleRemote" string may indicate... using the iPhone as a remote for a computer or the AppleTV via Wi-Fi? Who knows.
• There's a mention to Printer in the Library directory.
• There's also a string that says
'BRICKED_AND_SIM_LOCKED_STRING BrickedDevice Ignoring request to unlock because we're blocked or bricked '
Which seems to indicate that Apple is readying their software to battle the usual suspects after so many different unlock successes. [StuffTV, iPhone Hellas via New Launches]

This is sooooo badass.
Oh please let the GPS be true, if I could get a Bluetooth fob from TomTom it would be such a complete package. The other stuff is cool but I don't use it all that much, maybe I'll get bluetooth headphones when it becomes available.
I Hear law suits from over half a million iPhone users.....
or
just wait for a couples of days for the Hack to appear on giz
I CANNOT WAIT to brick my new 3G iPhone.
Guys, there not purposely bricking the iPhone, there just making pointless updates that just HAPPEN to brick your iPhone. The two are completely unrelated...
Need some MMS bitches.
So you mean the JesusPhone will start to include features that most other free phones have? Sweet. Go Apple. :rolleyes:
"What's next for the iPhone" has become the tech version of soccer/futbol.
The folks that don't "get it" really don't get it; its popularity drives them to madness; but for those that do, it's the best game in the world.
I like the Nike concept, and I'm interested to where they'll go with it. I can see if they doing this right making the gym and running alot easier, at least as far goes keeping track of what you've done.
Bluetooth... I've been wanting bluetooth headphones for a while now, it'd be great to finnaly see that supported.
I'd also like to see, a bluetooth car starter, bluetooth door unlocker, and a bluetooth put water in the cats water bowl thingy.
What happened to a camera in the front for video conferencing?
The red word bubbles with white text aren't funny anymore, gizmodo.
Nice article, anyway.
@stinkyboy: Bye bye troll. Call me when your phone can do Nike+ or most anything, my Mac (that you just happen to call a phone).....kthxbai
@Darrone:
I agree. When you purchase an iPhone you are essentially agreeing to become an AT&T customer using the iPhone on their network.
Any modifications are not supported by Apple. If you think they are bricking your iPhone on purpose, your mistaken. You're bricking the iPhone by modifying the original source.
@92BuickLeSabre: I concur
It will also bake a potato in 2 minutes; get your whites whiter; help you win friends and influence people; go from 0 to 60 in 3.2 seconds; remove nasty pet and cigarette odor; and help eradicate 99.99% of water-borne organisms.
BRING ME THE 3G!!!!!!!!!!
i haven´t bought one yet waiting for this sweet moment...
hope it is this summer, then a friend of mine can bring one down to me in brasil =D
oh yeah!!
wa wa we wa
There is but only 1 dealbreaker for me. Voice Dialing. It is something that I absolutely need from a phone or a flying car.
needs OBEX before I'll buy.
@OMG! Ponies!: Best Comment Today!
I really hope there is a GPS chip built in, rather than some goofy nike accessory. Its either that, or I am going for the NuviFone.
[www.mobilemag.com] (pic)
@OMG! Ponies!: See how far our standards have fallen while you've been away? Even low-end recycled Ponies material is being accurately hailed as top of the pops.
A2DP is all i care about get it in the 2.0 firmware and ill be happy that and OBEX, i mean jesus its a 400$ phone without things my 50$ old nokia has.
@Stacky Botrus: i love that phone also =S
if iphone doesn´t come out with a gps chip i will buy this one instead...
the only downside is no programs for nuvifone =D
Now is the time when we start speculating on the thousands of features JesusPhoneII will have, right? It just excites me to talk about products that are not yet announced and all of the features that may or may not be included. Reminds me of the long fireplace chats with my siblings about the possible Christmas presents -- Ferrari, McMansion, Gold Mine -- and then waking up Christmas day to find a pair of shorts from Value Village.
I can't believe the iPhone didn't have A2DP before this.. but water under the bridge.. it's a good thing it's coming. I'm hoping that this means Apple will bring out some nice first-party BT headphones. All the ones that are out there are pretty crappy. The one I like the best at the moment is actually the BT3030 which lets you use your own earphones. If Apple can come up with something innovate and elegant (as they usually do) I'll buy 'em.
As for the GPS, that'd be nice. Really nice, actually. The Nike+ integration would be interesting, but I imagine it would appeal to few - of the percentage of iPhone users who run regularly I imagine it's even a smaller percentage who want to run with their phone. I'm guessing it's not hardware integrated, just a snippet of code to make it compatible with the existing device.
@hudsong: I disagree hudsong, the comment bubbles are hilarious. Keep it up gizmodo.
P.S. Not impressed by the iphones delayed release of features, i have the HTC mogul that had all this and more from the get-go.
@92BuickLeSabre: yer too kind
How about some copy/paste copy/paste copy/paste copy/paste up in here.
There can't be a second coming of the Jesus phone until the first one is crucified.
If any of these three features comes to the iPhone, I'm going to have a really hard time not buying a new one. However, if I can get A2DP Bluetooth and Nike+ on my current iPhone, I can live without the GPS. At least, that's what I'm saying now.
gonna get me a JC phone
@OMG! Ponies!:
That would only be for the 16G model I'm afraid. The 8G will take over 5 mins for the potato thing and 0-60 will dramatically drop to a slow 11.5 secs. However, all is not lost! I hear that the 8G model will include a personal message from Jobs himself saying "good Morning" to you when the cell gets turned on.
Time to get all Yojimbo up in here.
Cut-and-paste: A vital necessity. Leaving it out sucks. Boo Cupertino on that one.
GPS: You're getting 3G (presumably if rumors are true), 32GB of space (again a rumor), WiFi, and a touchscreen interface. If you want to add GPS as well, don't be surprised when your iPhone costs $800.
Apple should add basic functionality. It should not add the kitchen sink if it will cause the handset to be outrageously priced.
The iPhone is in part designed to cut into Blackberry's and Treo's business. When T-Mobile is charging $250 for the Curve, adding features that will push the price even higher than the current $500 price tag hampers that goal.
@TheSonOfKrypton:
Mine already can. You lose.
@92BuickLeSabre:
Well, yes. But it's like signing Ian Rush rather than Fernando Torres now.
@yoshi: I was being sarcastic BTW, they are very much indeed purposely bricking your iPhone.
You have a right to use a device on any network. They are not allowed to prevent you from doing so. They just have a loophole in the fact that any bricking that occurs from updates NOT INTENDED to brick up a phone are allowed. Take a vote, im pretty sure its obvious that apple is attempting to brick iphones. More likely make it juuuuust difficult to unlock to avoid widespread non-AT&T adoption.
bluetooth gps..way to catch up with every ppc phone
@yoshi: I'm glad someone else understands the "caveat emptor" ("buyer beware") part of becoming an iPhone owner.
Re: the "Printer" text:
Don't forget how OS X handles printing. You don't just print to printers, you can print to file, print to PDF, etc. So, it might not necessarily be used to print to a network printer (although, I'm sure that's a fairly decent possibility), but I could see "printing" to a PDF that is immediately put in an email so you can email it to yourself or others for desktop printing later.
@Sleeper_Service: Oh? And what kind of phone is it exactly that you own that can interface with Nike+???
you know, there is absolutely no reason the current iphone can't do A2DP. They just need to re-write the bluetooth software stack. lazy bitches. or should i say greedy bitches?
@Darrone:
Honestly, I don't believe Apple's intentions are to "brick" your iPhone. They have to maintain a code/file version within their build releases. How do they know what changes you've made to open your device?
@hudsong:
"The red word bubbles with white text aren't funny anymore, gizmodo.
Nice article, anyway."
Yeah i like the ones on your profitable, internationally popular tech blog much better. If anyone knows how to run a blog, it's obviously you, not these clowns.
/sarcasm
@igneous:
Yeah, let us know when those phones start to catch up with Apples UI.
im going to have a hard time rationalizing buying anew $600 phone after a $600 phone the previous year that is in full working condition
damn you apple and your ipod hypnotizing effect.
@MrBlahBlah: itemized annual new phone expense $600 - find a write off_
What is Apple doing?!?! I mean these features are nothing new?! I'd bet the farm that Apple will not sell any units and will be out of business within 3 years. The iPhone, what a colossal failure.
any word on tethering?
@zsleek7:
tethering is against the rules - you have to hit the ball.
the iphone already has an accelerometer in it. wouldn't that totally eliminate the whole nike part of the nike+? you wouldn't have to buy the stupid shoe insert or the receiver.
@TheSonOfKrypton:
It doesn't have to since I use Sports Tracker from Nokia which works by using GPS to measure exactly how far you ran, your speed versus distance, etc. All without having to cough up for a third party peripheral.
Incidentally, one question mark is generally considered to be perfectly adequate.
Summary: You lose.
@Sleeper_Service: Yawn.....You didn't happen to read "dothedrewtoo"'s comment, did you? The iPhone has an inbuilt accelerometer. What does that mean in relation to this Nike+ shit? It means this: Come June, a developer could EASILY release a program (free or not) that applies an integral function to the accelerometer's output, calculating my instantaneous velocity which could easily be used to measure how far I've run and the distance I've run. No power hungry GPS service coming into play, no third party shit necessary.
Summary: GG. Come back next time.
kthxbai
i'll poop my pants if we get 3g, a2dp, gps and a 5mp camera.
@hudsong: this coming from a guy who has never been funny, let alone written an article.
@ILikeMacsWhatAboutIT: lolcatz.
@nutbastard: zing.
JESUS - The Video Bonus Secret Died !!!
So What's The Scoop?
@TheSonOfKrypton:
The N95 has a built in accelerometer too. Plus Nike is actually a third party company. Also it's nice to actually have the option to use GPS which you, uh, don't.
Games, set and match to me.
