Sony's 11-inch, 3mm-thick XEL-1 OLED TV is OK, I guess. But sometimes I worry that it's just too thick. I mean, 3mm? Come on, Sony. Who do you think you're dealing with here? Luckily, it looks like Sony is working on a new 11-inch OLED, one that's 10 times thinner than its expensive predecessor.
With a 960x540 resolution, this panel has very similar specifications to the XEL-1, but it's just a mere 0.3mm thick. The as-yet-unnamed panel is clearly just proof that they're able to create such a skinny display, so don't look for it in Best Buy anytime soon—it'd probably set you back somewhere in the solid five figures—but it doesn't take a soothsayer to envision 50-inch OLED TVs hanging on your wall, making the photo frames hanging next to it look downright obese. Sounds good to me. Make it happen, Sony. [Impress via Engadget]

Can I fax myself screen shots from the young and restless?
Ah, Sony, I think you're spending your energy working on the wrong spec. We want BIGGER OLED screens NOT thinner screens!
Bah, still too thick. My TV measures -0.2 mm. That's right, negative 0.2 mm. Suck on THAT Sony!!
I'll probably cut myself hanging this on the wall!
@TJ: you must watch TV on a film of water!
At 0.3mm I wonder if it is flexible. How great would it be to unroll a 65 inch Oled tv on your wall!
Minority Report scrolling personal ads and Total Recall wallscreens will be here in the foreseeable future... now they just need to be flexible like thin plastic and then I can buy my MediaSheet which can wirelessly obtain push and pull data for my morning commute.
Hurry up already. :)
@Optimus-Prime: Digital flags ftw!!! Who do you think would be the first nation to adopt an animated national flag?
A little bit of pee came out when i saw the first pic... WANT!
Sounds like HD paper to me. We'll be manufacturing .3mm touchscreen paper in no time. Save the trees!
@xint: You too? I use Depends for all my Gizmodo viewing!
Sure, we want bigger screens, but an 11" 3mm OLED screen would be a great thing in a laptop too. I'm ignoring the fact that it costs $2000 of course...
Title reads ".3 mm" which is 3 tenths of 1 mm. Not 3 mm.
@weatherman: an even thinner MacBook Air... YES PLEASE
I'm just wondering why somebody would make something so thin. It must be like paper!!!! Imagine tripping and hurtling yourself through 5 figure gift wrap.
@Muttonchops:
Thats because its 3 tenths of a MM, not 3mm.. the " THICK " one is 3MM thick.
@P3nnst8r:
Or getting a paper cut!
Totally sick!! Origami folding pocket displays, here you come!!
I thought bic pencil lead was thin, but at .3mm, it's half teh sizemor the lead.
@myotheralt: *half the size of the
lead
@P3nnst8r:
Imagine your 3 year old taking out her pink safety scissors and cutting out the pretty pictures.
@LJN: Ever wonder how many trees it takes to make this crap?

@Noobs-R-Us:
Amen
Now to take 3, put them one behind the other to simulate 3D.
You still need a separate box for all the inputs and power supply. I think all manufacturers can make their displays a lot thinner (maybe not this thin) by taking out all the extras from them.

@JChristopher:
Halleluiah
Once it's thin/light enough to mount on the wall, I don't care how much thinner it is if I can't see it from the other side of the room.
@cygnusx8: yes but that box could maybe incorporate your media center and game console thus saving even more space :D
no touch screen?
@Noobs-R-Us: @JChristopher: @rexplex:
I second, the previous motions. I also move that the size:cost ratio come down a bit too.
@Noobs-R-Us: Tons of uses for thin screens like this, even at 11 inches or less. Thinner cameras, ipods, portable dvd players, laptops, portable game systems, hell maybe even an electronic scroll-out map for your car or hiking. Besides, I doubt that Sony is just concentrating all of its efforts on OLED technology. Cool stuff, and I'm glad I'm around to see it actually being made, and not just in theory form.
Whoooooohooo!
E-paper goodbye, Oled-paper here we come!
@Gann: I can see it now, the american flag appears by blood running down the sides, the white appears in a flash of blinding light, and the stars drop down making goofy cartoon sounds and beating each other up.
Before you know it we'll have something like Display Can™ (DiC for short). You just shake up your DiC, spray it on a wall or other surface and you have yourself a display. Just don't do it to often or you could go blind.
Hopefully this will lead to cheaper oled screen isn't the near future. 2ndly, Who needs a TV that thin? Unless you really vaslue every mm of space
This is reminding me of The Office with the 15" plasma screen that he pushes closer to the wall when he needs the extra space.
At this thickness, it looks like you'll be able to create your own backlighting. DIY localized LED backlighting FTW!
eventually these things will be so cheap and so easy to produce that they'll be in every school just like those old slide down whitescreens for projectors. However, the new OLED slide downs will also get stuck in the down position, and then suddenly snap and reel itself back into the up position unexpectedly.
Wow, you could probably use that thing as a knife it's so thin. Interesting, a knife you can watch TV on O_o
@Noobs-R-Us:
Darn right!
I want a 65" for less than $1000. Don't care if it's 3" thick. I'll be watching it from 12 ~ 14 Ft away!
Can't wait for the time I'll be able to say something like "Damn, those TVcuts hurt like hell!" or "where the heck I put that TV... oh, slipped under the sofa cushions".
I wonder what will happen when my dad gets angry at the TV...
Now kids! Remember to put your Wii-mote strap on or else daddy's gonna be angry!
But then again like, the wind from you swinging the Wiimote'll probably tear a hole in it.
11-inches? Whatever!
Let me know when these things hit 40inches_
Seee? This is why we love Sony!
