An update that went out last week for Vista to patch security holes in Windows Defender (ironically) is apparently knocking out some USB devices like mice and keyboards, so that they stop working entirely. Microsoft actually admits the issue: "We are aware of concerns that a recent Microsoft update may be causing problems with USB devices. We are investigating the matter, and at this time, do not have any information to share." So you might wanna skip that one. Speaking of, the Reg also says Vista SP1's supposed auto roll-out "remains missing in action" and has an MS spokesman seemingly confirm the delay. We installed manually a while ago. Anyone got the automatic update? [The Reg]

ohh noes!
Gasp Microsoft actually admits the issue! What do you suggest they do, lie about it?
Giz is becoming tiresome in its bashing of MS and praise of Apple.
Ah, so that explains why my Vista SP1 download (through Windows Update) last night stopped at 7%.
*cough*wtftrylinux*cough*
Ah, so that explains why my Vista SP1 Update through Windows Update stopped at 7% and never went forward.
Wrong... you guys need to fact check your Microsoft stuff more often, as it turns out to be wrong allot... Anyway, the rollout has begun. In case you weren't aware, the rollout would be staggered and not hit everyone at the same time. It has actually started showing up on some people's machines.. Just because you don;t see it doesn't mean others don't.
Still happy with XP, thank you very much.
Did anyone else see Auto-Rollout and think Optimus Prime? Just thought I'd toss that out there...carry on...
The quality of software from Microsoft is comforting. Everyday I woke up, I step of my bed and I already surpass their quality standard.
How am I supposed to fix this problem if my mouse and keyboard are disabled? Oops.
" . . . We are investigating the matter, and at this time, do not have any information to share. . . . We will however post a really cool music video about this at some point in the future."
@bandit:
You can use an Ubuntu Live CD to boot up, which will give you access to the NTFS partition, which won't help you fix windows, but it will help you decide windows is total bullshit and subsequently install linux : )
Meets expectations.
Perhaps if Quality Control had a video like Sales.....
Killed my Logitech laser keyboard and mouse.
@itchytooth: You Klingon bastard! You killed my input device.
@Cullen D: Sorry you were offended Cullen......sounds like you are the only one who loves VISTA more than the rest of us!
My MX600 mouse (that I got with the MX3200 keyboard in a combo) will not work. The keyboard works fine and the mouse is being detected, but the cursor will not be moved!
@Aleung: Just curious, do you have any specific examples do back up your claim? Or are you just bitching in hopes that some day the "Almighty Steve Jobs" will one day give you the privilege of sucking his software-dick?
@nutbastard: Agreed, everyone should load up a live disk of Ubuntu just once to try it out, it's live so it doesn't hurt to try.
@OMG! Ponies!: Also agreed, Vista is too much bloat for me at this time.
I got the automatic update, but i still have been sticking with XP since I tried Vista....3 months ago.
No matter, besides my keyboard and mouse Vista hasn't recognized a USB device on my machine since day 1. It also tries to install SP1 but fails at 3%.
Of course, I wasn't retarded and I built a separate machine to run Vista on so that when I have problems I can switch to a networked XP machine. Just common sense, really.
Huh, I've been having trouble with my mouse on a Vista laptop. I usually use the touch pad so it didn't bother me too much until i went to play a game. This was just a week ago?
My work machine, the only one I have Vista on, automatically updated yesterday. No problems with mouse or keyboard, though it's a Dell package so it was probably in their testing suite.
Just sounds like business as usual in the MS camp. My personal machines are staying on XP or Linux until there's any real reason to switch.
...and Microsoft is planning to stop selling XP by June... smooth, very smooth.
So this is what killed my HP Media Computer wireless keyboard. I thought it was poor reception. Gah!
Home machine running Vista worked fine last time I powered it up, dunno if it snagged the update or not, think I'll go turn off Auto updates however...
@Papsky: Hehe. Simple, yet hilarious.
@bandit: Throw your computer "out of the window."
I got the update and all sorts of things went haywire. All of it could have been just a coincidence, but both major problems happened the very next time I used the computer after the update. First, the computer stopped recognizing my wife's blackberry when she would plug it in to synch and recharge. It wouldn't recharge nor would it open the desktop software. It drove me crazy trying to figure out the problem - until I switched the usb cord, which amazingly got it going again. The cord, however, was only a few months old and has never left the room. Also, Outlook stopped recognizing her profile and repeatedly kept asking her for her password (every 10 seconds to a minute). Again, it took me forever to figure out the problem - which I never did. After about the 5th time of deleting and re-doing the profile, it just started working again. Like I said, the problems could be unrelated but the timing sure is suspicious.
On the occasion of this "glorious" Vista news.....happy to announce I got myself a brand new MacBook Pro today....this thing is a real beauty and worth every dollar for the beautiful computing experience I get through OS X (been a OS X for a few years now).
Sadly however still have to deal with Vista crap for work purposes....
I've had SP1 for over two months, and haven't had this problem.
Typical M$, they don't do right till they make an Epic Fail
Yes this is the reason to only update if you have a reason to. MS will tell you to update without any good reason, it's automatic so decide for yourself if there's a reason, if it doesn't make sense, don't do it. Amazing how people trust MS and just "upgrade" thinking it's better and nothing bad could ever happen.
Upgrading any software can do as much harm as good. If your system is fine, think twice about it.
I've been updating my computer past few days hopin the auto-update will show up but it hasn't....the reason i didn't do the manual is exactly these little problems
I switched over to Vista for the aesthetics and if the SP1 is not too heavy on the looks and all "security" and "un-performance boost" then i can just wait
been ruinngin my pc on the new sp1 for a while now... i used a dinovo and a mx revoultion and neither give me any problems at all. My pc put the SP in the recommended updates in windows update.
I'm dual booting Ubuntu and XP, and I still find myself choosing to boot XP most of the time ... SP3 ftw! That said, Ubuntu is great, I just couldn't be bothered to get all my software working on it :P
yeah my keyboard is boned. can't roll back. can't fix... tried all supposed fixes on the googles. microsoft has dropped support for KEYBOARDS!!!
this is now officially... far worse than ME ever was.
@bandit:@itchytooth: @openfly:
No one has PS2 devices lying around anymore?!?
Maybe drop the $10 - $15 for a cheap standby keyboard/mouse set?
But otherwise, yes, M$ dropped the QA testing ball on this :/
@openfly: Happy i had a hacked version and got caught.
My xp isn't as great as vista is but give it a week and it should be up and running faster than vista was. If not then im going to remove the 2gb's of ram and stay with 512 for an hour then reinsall the 2gb and enjoy the 2.5GB goodness. =]
Ballzini enjoy bitches lolx.
Vista was hot i never had issues with it i guess i had good luck with it =]
Happy im not one of you guys who are suffering.
