What's the first thing we did with our Casio Exilim EX-F1, the Hiro Nakamura camera/camcorder that makes time stand still? We recorded a mini Cuisinart laying havoc to some tomatoes. Why? If you have to ask, you probably shouldn't be here. The top vid is a view of the carnage at 300 frames per second. (As you'll see, I call my food processor "Hitchcock" because it's always keeping me in suspense.) Below, additional tomatoes get annihilated at 600fps and then 1200fps, with increasing detail, but decreasing resolution and light.
This is probably the happiest tradeoff of resolution to slow-mo devastation. The first video records at 512x384, while this one drops you down to a funky widescreen 432x192.
The 1200fps setting is pretty much a novelty more than anything else, since you need a ton of light, and it records at an all too wide 336x96. We had to crop it so that it made any kind of sense, but here's a screengrab of the original vid:
There's more to come with this fun little camera, but we wanted to give you a rather violent taste straight away. You're welcome. [Casio Exilim EX-F1 Full Review on Giz]
And for those of you who can't get that song out of your head, here's a link to the 99-cent MP3 on Amazon. [Hide and Seek by Imogen Heap]

um. . . what's up with the music?
seems a little fruity, i guess it's fitting with the tomato.
The second one is the best on many levels.
Man, that tomato makes so many spinning orbits of that thing before losing integrity entirely that I was watching for it to make one_more_ revolution, but alas, wahatyagonna do?
(make gravy/sauce I imagine)
Play all 3 at once for a polyphonic tomato massacre...
Thats probably the coolest thing I will see all day. Destruction and delicious all at once.
Tomato juice, anyone?
mmm... what'cha say..
The first video just shows how inefficient the blender is. All that wasted time while the tomato is airborne.
I was rooting for the tomato. That poor bastard didn't have a chance.
What this test shows, is that Giz needs a better food processor. The blades should cut the food, not tear it to shreds. Although, it made for very exciting video. But what is with the weird resolutions? Why not factors of standard resolutions?
what is the name of the song in the video?
at 600 fps, you could almost hear the tomato screaming.. "oh god, oh god god no (sobbing) MY LEEEEEEGGGGGGGGGG AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH"
thuk thuk thuk
...so at 0832 on April 18, 2008 I found my self captivated for several minutes as I watched...tomatoes in a food processor. Sigh.

@gatordent: Advent Children Style "Mmm What You Say"
Halfway through the second vid, I tore off me ears.
Damn, the music kept reminding me of the human giant sketch.
If you're wondering about the song, it originally came from here:

and I think SNL made it popular with this (sorry, no YouTube, couldn't find it on Hulu):

if you time it well, and play all the videos at once, the music gets wicked...you can play the songs at different levels...live track mixing, fun THEN you have the tomato visual on top of that...for just pure fun, this could be one of my favorite posts of the year...i have been sitting on this for like 20 min...yea work sucks
"We'll start with your chubby little fingers"
"Tell us everything"
The best is when the tomato is actually riding on top of the blade for a second.
@schmere:
That was uncalled for don't you think?
whoh.. with the music and all I feel rather bad for the tomato. what a tragic ending..
Well, I suppose that would be the case unless you believe in reincarnation, that tomato was reborn as zesty salsa!!!
I lost my best tomato friend to a blender incident when I was a kid.
THANKS for bringing the pain up again, Giz!
When I first saw this on the main page I thought: Wah? Casio made a blender? and Gizmodo posted a video of it? at different speeds?
whew! it's gonna be a long day.
@Nathan Drake: My bad, I meant Schmere<---n00b, but telling that to gatordent. Schmere<---ubern00b.
While the 1200fps is hard to watch, in many ways, I could see that version used the most in future campaigns: the efforts of the tomato to resist the slashing blades... the fruitless (fruited?) struggle... the relentless violence... the reduction of flesh to pulp... the spilling of juice. It's hard to imagine anyone who's watched that ever ordering Gazpacho again in a restaurant.
If that had been a bass instead of a tomato, forget about ordering a bass milkshake in a Dairy Queen ever again.
The Exilim EX-F1 isn't just a camera. It's an instrument of culinary revolution!!!
I have but one question about the Casio camera....
WILL IT BLEND?!??!
Looking for ideas? How about a BB to the chest:

This is pretty much what I was envisioning when I posted this: [gizmodo.com]

Sorry!
@karmaghost: Yep, you win the prize! (Which is, sadly, nothing, but great pop-culture sleuthing anyhow.)
WTF is the point of having 1200fps if you can't see shit?
ALSO - Wilson What's the song in the background?
Like I wasn't hungry enough already, thanks Giz, now I want chips and salsa!!
@uberfu: You slow it down to 30FPS and make a slow motion video. That will be smooth.
lol that songs one of those songs that when u play it twice in different times and like, overlay them it sounds good
Two things
1) I think I saw bigfoot in the 1200fps video
2) I really want some salsa now
Crap. If I have to start watching the OC to get the jokes around here I'm done for.
for one shocking moment, i thought you had filmed blending the exilim with the tomato!!!
i was like :O
If this video had been leaked to the Killer Tomoto Corps and were informed that the citizens of our fine community had a well-stocked ordnance of Cuisinarts, we may have staved off that infamous attack.
How 'bout you set the Casio to take video while IT'S getting blended. Now THAT would be cool!
You can probably reduce noise if you add more light to the 1200fps.
Wow. It's like a battle scene from braveheart... in slow motion... except with tomatoes... and a food processor..
Bonus points for using Imogen Heap!
@Hiphopopotamus:
AWESOME IDEA DUDE!....
It's polyphonic tomato massacre indeed!
So I am a 16 year old cheerleader and I want to film myself and my closest friends beating the shit out of someone so I can post it on youtube. Now the big questions, do I use 300 fps or 600 fps. I obviously don't want to use the 1200 since it won't provide enough resolution to clearly identify me or my compadres. Damn, I hope both my step-parents will buy this for me for Christmas, it will be sooooo bitchen!!!
Okay, it's pretty clear now...
the three precursors of a bad outcome are:
1. bedwetting
2. fascination with fire
3. cruelty to animals....
And what to do find in the backpacks of those above children who make it to young adulthood?
1. A copy of "Catcher in the Rye"
2. An mp3 of "Mmm, what'cha say"
you'll definitely improve the 1200fps videos (and the 600fps ones too) by adding more light. Some work lamps with high-wattage bulbs would work best.
Um yeah could have done without the imogen heap. Completely annoying music.
Here's the song and a video of it:

But anyways, nice camera...just poor video and high FPS.
Casio's have never been "great" imo, just a general consumer camera.
My favorites are Nikon and Canon, man Canon has some nice consumer cameras with a fast shutter speed!
first half of the video is pretty boring.
Goddamnit, we need one of these cameras, a Blendtec Total Blender, and random objects to throw in said blender. WILL IT BLEND AT 1200FPS?
My God. It BLENDS!
This is why I love Gizmodo.
@Bos'un's Mate: awesome link. This will probably occupy the entire evening for me and my kids.
@beyondthetech: that had to have a scorpion type feature where it throws a spear at the tomatoe and screams get over here and gets diced up nicely for a baraka kind of feel with the end of the guy yellinq finish him as the blender suddenly unveils its finishing move and starts attacking violently to end it with a fatality. =]
Yes if you havent noticed i've been playing Mortal Kombat Trilogy. Yep after 9pm gives me a good night sleep. Especially after watching Bleach =] lolx.
yep i've been bored. idc tho lolx.
If you liked the song, check out Laurie Anderson.... A bit of inspiration, maybe?
+ Watch video
@mizunoer: Imogen Heap. She rocks.
Needs more water pouring... or at least a normal speed video for comparison.
The feature is neat, but I couldn't tell how slow the video is going...
so very lame.
should have stuck couple of onions in there and shoot the people freaking out.
