Yesterday we showed you Spider-Pig and Homer made of folders, and today here's a cool rendition of Day of the Tentacle's Purple Tentacle taking over a Linux desktop. This folderpiece—made by reader Damien Nozay—is the first entry in our ongoing desktop clutter art contest, sent just a couple hours after the announcement. Minutes later, reader Zachary Colen sent us this retro folder illustration of the 'Killjoy' medal from Halo 3:

Looks like a great start. Send your entries to tips@gizmodo.com over the next days and we will post a gallery of all participants next Friday. And by the way, if you need icons for your illustration—remember that you can make these with any type of icons, not just folders—head to the always good Iconfactory. [Spider-Pig]

CONTEST OVER. Purple Tentacle wins SO. VERY. HARD.
Obviously, since he TAKES ON THE WORLD.
OK I must try making one of these things.
Purple Tentacle is the shit.
@jrronimo: Going to agree here. Theres no outdoing the tentacle.
I'd like to see that mario image worked in, perhaps in a fully detailed mario world with flying attach ships and those spinners/giant bullets?
it's only a matter of time before someone scripts the ability to turn any graphic you can throw out into desktop icon art.
i'd be more impressed if it wasnt untitled folder 1 through 10000.
@plinkofrog: Better yet: ANIMATED desktop folder art!
@James: I know I won't be using any file folders with stuff I want in it, cuz after I'm done, I'm taking a screen shot and putting all of that crap right into the trash bin.
Isn't that the tentacle from a coputer game called Maniac Mansion? it is an old computer game like very early nineties or maybe late eighties is there anyone old enough to remenber this?
It's from "Day of the Tentacle" released in 1993.
@Petrogk:
It was also in Maniac Mansion.
Day of the Tentacle was "Maniac Mansion II". Purple Tentacle appears in both.
First pic reminds me of Plankton.
All TRUE folder art is done using gnome in Fedora. A++ purple tentacle.
wow, I'd love to try this, but I have a girlfriend. :)
@potohead1: Yes, many of us aren't 12, and have a very clear memory of this.
Glad someone here still remembers "Maniac Mansion", I played it first on Apple IIe then PC.
day of the tentacle for life!!!
he won
internet fame for 15 minutes!
i wish windows would allow me to color folders...
could make quite good use of my free time at work
YES! Purple Tentacle! Ahaha. I just installed ScummVM and DoTT on my DS for some portable puzzle solving action.
Also, how do you color folders like that in Linux? Is that a Gnome specific thing? I use XFCE.
Also, how do you color folders like that? Is that a Gnome thing, or can I do it in XFCE as well?
I'd pay money to someone do a Rick Astley desktop.
Great a nerd-off. Well, here's my proposed hierarchy:
Sam and Max beats Tom Servo and Crow Jell-O wrestling which beats an accurate Monster Manual illustration of Tiamat which beats the picture of Osama bin Jobs which beats a representation of Woz in a match of Segway polo which beats Wil Wheaton in a Speedo which beats Zap Branigan in his pimparific quarters which beats Luke vs. Vader in the carbon freezing chamber which beats Bill Gates' high school yearbook photo which beats a box of pepperoni Hot Pockets which beats Wayne Knight from Jurassic Park which beats Tentacle which beats Spiderpig
@Darrone: I think you're dreaming.
If someone has enough time to do a print screen type thing with folders on a desktop of mario they have way too much time on their hands.
That'd have to take atleast an hour.
I like the purple tentacle though its crazy how he put the shade under the green rings as dark purple folders and made it look soo good.
good job.
@tutelary: Sorry buddy didn't mean to make you angry.@pipper: Do you know ifthat game is around anywhere? to play it.
This goes to everyone if anyone could tell me about this game or where to find it.
Also if "Day of the Tentacle" ia maniac mansion2 could anyone tell me what console it came out on?
Incredibly cool! I loved the game(s)! And yes, I am that old :P I started at the university in Copenhagen in '93 :D
@potohead1:
Here is the good news for you, if you can get a hold of a copy of "day of tentacle" for PC, you will also get a playable Maniac Mansion.
You will control your character to Fred's(?) room, click on the computer, and Maniac Mansion will come up!!
Looks great
I tried something like this - was gonna make the helmet worn by the Master Chief, but I got bored after making half the visor.
Who has the patience to make something?
I was getting close to throwing my PC out of the window after 45mins and half a visor.
@pipper: Hey thank you for the info I really appreciated.
