When we last checked in on super shady Mac cloner Psystar's gridskipping ways, they'd supposedly somehow managed to land a $6 million pad—a little fishy, given their brief history. A ZDNet reader on the ground got up close, reporting that there's definite activity at the location, though no hard confirmation it's Psystar that's the busy bee. More importantly, Psystar claims they're "up and running" and have started shipping orders placed the week of April 7, with orders from last week going out on April 21 from their new shop.
Tracking numbers are supposed to go out when your order ships, so if anyone ordered two weeks ago, you should have gotten yours already. And anyone ballsy enough to jump in after the slime started to hit the fan should theoretically get 'em on Monday. If you've ordered one, let us know how it goes. A huge thanks to all of you pushing this thing forward, please keep the tips coming. [ZDNet, Thanks JB!]

$6 million evil lair? What bank put up the loan for this oh so shady upstart?
I'll believe it when I see it.
If they actually had the balls to deliver with OS X preinstalled, there's gonna be a shit storm of epic proportions. Which might give the Giz guys another chance to use their Godfather Steve photo.
Let's see what Apple loop-hole they're trying to exploit...
@DucatiGuy: Speaking of which, I've heard claims that you can satisfy OS X's EULA by putting an apple sticker on the hardware. Anyone know if that's true? Could Psystar be using that loop-hole?
@itchytooth: I don't know for certain but that sounds like a possible misinterpretation of an EULA that says OS-X can only be used on Apple branded hardware.
If that's the case, I doubt putting an Apple sticker on something fulfils the legal requirements of 'branding' - Apple probably reserve the right to be the only people to brand products using their name/logo/etc.
Is it me, or is this purely aimed at people who don't know better? The specs page lists it as coming with a Geforce 8600 then says you can upgrade to a Geforce 8600 which strikes me as trying to confuse people, or just plain odd to have a typo on a product page.
I'd be amazed if this lasted, especially with stealing the "SuperDrive" name. Steve is bound to squash them like a bug as soon as they appear on his radar.
I became doubly suspicious when I called Psystar's customer support # and LonelyGirl15 answered.
@itchytooth: Doubt it, they say in their EULA that it must be an Apple branded computer.....putting a sticker on something doesn't legally make it company branded...
I think they will just exploit the fact Apple can't touch them if they don't sell, preinstall, or give you help on installing OSX. And I wish them the best of luck. I acctully think its a good idea, not everyone wants to round up the parts which work nice with OSX, and then build the machine. Plus $400 isn't a bad deal....
@Step666: On this site it was quoted as "Apple labeled." Still a pretty forlorn hope to hang a 6 million+ enterprise. You have to pity that foo bank.
I hate to put a damper on the justified skepticism about this outfit, but they could be leasing the space.
hey, there's still a chance that they actually exist, and these machines aren't total crap. In which case.....I could be interested
Anyone have the balls to actually buy one of these monstrosities? Yes, I used a big word.
Yeah, I don't think slapping an apple sticker covers it. Otherwise I think you'd probably have more than one clonester getting in on the action. As far as the 6 million $ evil lair, maybe they're co-occupying it with Dr. Evil?
@TheManator: You think that's a big word, you should try antidisestablishmentarianism. Now that's a big word.
ah, its good to live in Florida!
@DucatiGuy: From what I understand, they're not exploiting any loophole. They've been going around saying that they feel that the "only use on Apple hardware" clause of the EULA is nullified by anti-trust laws, and that they're prepared to fight it in court if Apple comes knocking.
if it's legit i'd buy one, looks like a decent machine me, osx or no.
Once all lot of orders are completed, I'm all in.

(instead of all)@<
@HeartBurnKid: you'd be nuts to believe these guys would do anything in court but duck and run. the Pedrazas seem to be (from the laundry list of abandoned business licenses a bit of looking in the previous post turned up) pretty average, uninspired guys looking to make a quick buck. even if Apple lost the legal action, they'd give Psystar such large legal bills that the Pedrazas would spend the next twenty years trying to pay them off, one four hundred dollar linux box at a time. what kind of business plan is that?
May I Ask Why Mr. Haroon Malik is not writing today? its the weekend. :(
@11hawkinst: Erk?
Where are all the other copycats?
Wow, without any concrete evidence to the prove they are not legitimate, we have an article calling them 'super shady' and 'slime' merchants.
And a room full of apple fan boys eager to cheer it on.
Funny.
I'm all for these guys (if they're legit) for bringing more people into the Apple fold. If more people become enlightened on how well OS X works then so be it. Apple has always been regarded as a premium technology maker anyway so what's the big deal if someone wants to reach out to the more economy-minded consumer that wants the Mac-experience? I'd say OK that deal and charge a commission for every OS they package with the machines. Why not???
@jackfrost132: I thought he meant "balls."
Sounds to good to be true, the processor alone cost about $150, a decent power supply for a core2duo capable motherboard will run you about another $150, I don't think they can get a motherboard, a 250GB hadrive, 2GB ram, a DVD RW & all the other components for under $100, Not on planet earth. If this turns to be true nevermind if it can run leoapard i want one just to run windows, that should not be hard.
Dunno why you assume that they own the building they're occupying. Ever hear of a lease? I live in a $2M house, but I sure as hell don't own it.
Giz has been talking smack about this company since early on. I hope these guys turn out to be legit.
You people all amaze me with your continued lack of intelligence. Where is there ONE example of this machine running in the lab, God forbid (gasp) in the wild.
So, somebody says something and it just must be true. Well gee-whiz, Sparky. I have Cold Fusion ready & waiting.
Oh, wait a minute...
Fucktards.
Have you seen the movie matchstick men? You know the one about the CON ARTIST
Hehe. I'm running Leopard 10.5.1 on my Compaq Presario desktop. Bone stcok, except for I added a little bit of ram. It works great.
@Gofastmazda: exactly! and shame on all those people that implied the same things about CherryOS. a true pinnacle of engineering genius and certainly not an attention-grabbing scam.
Gizmodo are supposed to journalists right? Well why don't you do what any other half decent media outlet would do and actually get off your arses and risk some money and order one?
Instead of trying to just crowdsource your stories...seriously sometimes I wonder why I bother with the likes of the giz and the engadget sites - regurgitated circular aggregations of the same old shite... do something!
@rh2600: Actually, I'm pretty sure Gizmodo is a blog.
I come here specifically for regurgitated circular aggregations of the same old shite. That's what they're peddling, and that's what I want.
If you think a "half decent media outlet" should throw a few hundred dollars into what looks suspiciously like a black hole, I suggest you go register halfdecentmediaoutlet.com and throw your own money away.
I just checked out their site, it seems like business as usual and they are actually presenting a challenge asking the consumer to go ahead and purchase, perhaps obvious of Apple's impending wrath.
I'm tempted to get one, were it not for the Apple OS hehe.
@bigMoneyMIKE: It's one thing to advise people to be cautious, it's another to outright accuse a business of being fraudulent without solid evidence of same.
If Psystar turns out to be shady, then, at that point with EVIDENCE and PROOF make a statement stating as such. To make such accusations beforehand is dangerous at best.
It's just curious to me how this business has essentially been slammed from the get-go without any proof they are frauds.
@snitch29: A $50 power supply will do just fine, especially for a low end system like these are supposed to be. 2 GB RAM can be had for $35. A 250 GB HDD for $50. A semi-decent mobo for $70. That processor is actually only $125. Throw in a $50 case and a $25 DVD-RW CD-RW drive and you've got a total of only $410.
@Gofastmazda:
"...It's just curious to me how this business has essentially been slammed from the get-go without any proof they are frauds."
How 'bout I turn that question around and throw it right back at ya:
Show me ANY proof they're legit!
@winexprt:
I know this is off topic, and no doubt this has been asked before, but 9/11 was an inside job!? WTF???
@NewPerfection: OK so if it's over $400 just in parts which i doubt, do you actually think they're going to sell it for $399 assemble?????? lol, yeah right. Put a $50 power supply on a motherboard with a core2duo processor and just let it run for 2 minutes, see what happens
@mildretard: People say it was, but there's a little problem Osama it's claiming responsibility himself & terrorist are real, just ask any US soldiers that's been to iraq, so i personally doubt it was a inside job like rosie odonnell said.
@NewPerfection: You're on the right track.
@snitch29: It's not over $400 in parts.
Processor: $125
MB w,GMA950: <$60
2GB RAM: ~$35
250GB HD: $50-$60
20x DVD: $18-$20
Case: $50
And that's not even trying.
Silly me, that's well under $400.
And, that processor will run just fine with a cheap power supply. It's not exactly a monster.
@mildretard:
It is indeed off topic, but I'll simply say this, and it will be the last word by me re: 9/11 in this comment thread out of respect for Giz: the more you seriously, dispassionately study the highly improbable events of that day, you can come to no other logical conclusion.
A good primer on the RIDICULOUS "Conspiricy" theory that is the "Official" version of 9/11 is "The New Pearl Harbor" by David Ray Griffin.

Actually all his books are impeccable. I highly suggest you try and read them all.
