Ten-Inch Version of Eee PC to Come, Says Asustek CEO

thumb300x_eee900conf.jpgThe Eee PC will be available in a ten-inch version, says Asustek CEO. Speaking at the launch of the Eee PC 900 in Taiwan, Jerry Shen said that customers were clamoring for bigger keyboards for the lightweight laptop. "The feedback we've received from users has been great," claimed the CEO at a press conference. "Many have asked us for bigger screens and better usability. That's what made us start developing the Eee PC 900." Although he declined to name a release date or a potential price for the ten-incher, the larger size will probably bring the price up quite considerably. [PC World]

  • 10 inch screen is nice but a larger screen and cost pushes this into a different class of laptops. Doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of the design?

  • Well, yeah. But this is what happens when you listen to your customers.

Coming up: built-in Blue Ray player, 1TB hard drive, and strap for wearing it like a Bluetooth headset.

    Price: your mama.

I think Aerosmith wrote a song about this, didn't they?

  • I'd rather they made a laptop with a 5.7" 4:3 screen and a case that was barely larger than that. And sold it for the original $200 mark. Maybe...maybe a laptop with two 5.7" screens and touch keyboard on the bottom, like an upsized deluxe DS...but no more! Sigh. People want big and small at the same time. I guess this will be solved when usable HUD arrive.

  • Headline: "Asus EeePC growing an inch a year, to be full-sized laptop by 2012" @strider_mt2k: actually performed first in the '50s by Bull Moose Jackson.

    @bahalana:
Bull Mosse Jackson wrote "Toys in the Attic"?

    I kid, I kid.
I defer to your superior knowledge on this one, with thanks! :D

  • eh, a 10" eee will most likely price itself out of the market it was originally intended for.

  • @Maksimir:

Totally agree. This is entering "Why bother?" territory.

  • Is it possible to install a 2.5" SATA HD in an Eee PC or is the flash drive fixed into it? I like the Eee as it is now, just I'd like to put 320GB HD in there for storing lots of RAW photos on trips.

  • If they can manage to fit that 10-inches screen into the same form factor of the Eee 900, I say go for it.

However, I think the HP 2133 has a much nicer design, and seems to be more powerful than the Eee.

  • The Eee appears to be a very plentiful cow for the milking.

  • I'm amazed how most casual computer users completely refuse to see the point of the original eeePC concept. By next year, there'll be a 17" eeePC priced competitively...

When compared to a MacBook Pro.

  • i was at a bestbuy in Mass the other day and couldnt find the ever so popular asus model that everyone has been snatching up. i did however, strangely enough, see that they toted at least one or two high end asus gaming models which were pretty snazzy looking if i do say so myself.

  • @Jango:

actually, it'll be solved when they figure out (and start) replacing the traditional laptop monitors with epaper monitors that are just as good as traditiional ones, but can be rolled up.

  • No, I think 9-10" is the ideal point. Smaller than that and it gets hard on your eyes and your hands for the keyboard. I mean, I've used the 5" U810 and it's not that great in the ergonomics department.

Supply and demand, economies of scale will bring the price down over time.

  • So at the launch of the 9-inch version they said it will be available in a ten-inch version. What kind of marketing strategy is this? "You know, you can buy this thing, but we'll have something better in a few months." I mean, it's like this in general, but you don't have to rub the customer's nose in it.

  • I don't want a larger screen.
I want a higher resolution screen.
When they get to at least 1280x800 I'll be interested.

  • what will be actually good about this sub par notebook? if nit the price - then what?

  • Should be renamed to "Pee C"

  • @m-p{3}: It is woefully obvious that you are not familiar with VIA CPUs at all... the VIA c7-m in the HP Mini is pure shit.

The HP Mini 2133 is DEFINITELY NOT more powerful than the EEE.... even the EEE 701, which is underclocked @ 630 MHz on the 900 MHz Intel Celeron CPU, outperforms the 1.6 GHz VIA C7-m in the highest-end HP mini configuration. That's pretty damn pathetic.

If the HP didn't have such a shit-ass CPU I would have jumped all over it. Well, that and the large, ugly obese bezel that surrounds the HP mini's screen... two major design flaws in that device.
