This has to be the most jaw-dropping NES mod ever ... putting a whole system-on-a-chip NES console clone into an original game cartridge. Talk about how to demonstrate the advances in shrinking electronics over the years! Modder Kotomi took an original Super Mario Brothers cartridge, gutted it and somehow squeezed in all the circuitry, chips, power switches, twin joystick ports and composite video and stereo audio sockets. And it even looks pretty neat. If I was wearing a hat, I'd tip it in Kotomi's direction. [Technabob]

I wanna see someone put the PS one in a disc.
Very nice indeed. Add a psu and a small screen and you have a DS
The space time continuum is intact FOR NOW... but if someone actually inserts this into an NES then we're screwed.
Actually they'd have to blow in it first. Then push it to the left. Then sometimes jam another game on top of it to keep it down. THEN the space time continuum is screwed.
If you've ever opened up an NES before, you've seen how amazingly simple and how little tech there is in side that box.
Which end do you blow into to make it stop flashing?
Their ecosystem rocks!
did the NES have tubes in it like old TV's did? Just wonderin'
woww, dope
@discounteggroll
Of course it didn't!!!
the NES came out in 1985, not 1945.
@coiagp:
Actually it was 1983. But still, same thing.
I'm surprised to see stereo audio outputs on this mod. IIRC the nes was mono only...
Amazing. And looks nicely crafted too. This could have looked fugly.
Greatest Mod Ever, ever, ever
I'm gonna call some form of shenanigans. Anybody look at the screen image of "Super Bros. 5", or are they using a knockoff game?
this is wicked. i wish i thought of that before
@secretmanofagent: Agreed... what the hell is "Super Bros. 5"?
@secretmanofagent:
It could very possibly be a modded Super Mario Bros. 2. Look at the intro screen, that's a Mario 2 intro screen.
Chances are it's fake though.
Hmm... for some reason these pics are familiar.... like I've seen this before a long time ago.
@ipodrulz: okay - that's funny!
to all you nay sayers - yeah "Super Bros. 5" is some fake knock off or whatever_
Even if the damned cartridge doesn't play shit - forget about the 3rd pic - the concept is one of the best things going_
.
I have several copies of the original Super Mario Bros. as well as a couple NES's... maybe I'll try it lol.
Dana nana nana!
Anyone notice it's a Famicom cartridge slot? Laaaame.
so, this isnt an nes mod. its one of these in a cartrige. thats why it has 'super bros 5'. theyre not big at all. ben heck has a picture: [www.benheck.com]
i love those clone games.... they were so much fun. i remember the clones with 500 games in one cartridge. it was basically 5 games, cloned 100 different ways... haha
Next up a Nintendo 64 into a Goldeneye cart.
fake or not, they missed the awesomist opportunity to use the cartridge end as the connector.
@uberfu:
Very interesting and informative post. Do you have anything else to add?
"Super Bros. 5" is likely a pirated game. In fact, this probably is made from one of those "500 games in 1" controllers that you see at shady booths at swap meets.
In fact, looking at the final screenshot on the page, that cartridge sure as hell looks like a Chinese pirate cartridge, so yeah.
I prefer it smashed into the controller itself; conplete with magic red glowing Nintendo logo.
Read the article on gearfuse here.
@The Monarch:
That looks to be a nice mod, however something about this:
[www.gearfuse.com]
Doesn't seem so enticing.
Looks like the computer world may have sex with us before we have sex with them. We keep finding reasons to blow them.
The controller ports look like atari 2600 controller ports, not NES ports...
@The Monarch: Sweet Nerdsmithing! Where do you plug the 2nd player controller in?
