The first allegedly-leaked shots of the 3G iPhone arrived earlier this month. Yesterday, Engadget claimed that the iPhone was going to look all black and shiny, like in the photo. (Although they didn't say that was a photo of the said unit.) Today, what we know for sure is that the thing in the photo is just a protection case available for the current iPhone out of Hong Kong. While it's logical to assume that 3G will be in the next iPhone, we still have to wait to see if its all-black color, the GPS, or any of the other predictions are true or not. [winandmac]

eh thats unfornate because I REALLY like the looks of that. Does anybody know where this case can be purchased?
engadget and iphone rumors are like having a devil's threesome-nothing but pain and disappointment
Alot of Apple fanboys got laid last night because of yesterday's blog post. :)
At this very moment, the same folks are waking up next to each other saying "WTF happened last night and WHO ARE YOU?"
wasn't this little bit of information revealed already in a previous post?
@yoshi:
Sadly all windows fans remain dedicated virgins.
Myself included.
lol i knew it was just a case or paint job. :D
And what lesson have we learned, Gizmodders?
Never trust engadget as a source.
I don't think engadget ever said that that picture WAS the new iphone, just that it would have a glossy back.
Though well worth keeping in mind that Engadget never claimed this image was the new iPhone, they just commented on the similarities between the photo (rumored to be the new iPhone by iPodObserver) and the information they had received.
This doesn't rule out a glossy-black iPhone, it just rules out that glossy black iPhone.
@PicsNao: Beat me to it :D
@sircrumpet: exactly.
@sircrumpet: which is precisely what the article says. Engadget says that the iPhone looked all glossy and black, like the image shows. Now we know that the image is not the 3G iPhone.
As for the other predictions, we will have to wait and see because, at this point, nobody really knows for sure. Like always, rumors may be true or not at the end. It's just a matter of chance.
@PicsNao: RTA. We don't say Engadget claimed that was a photo of the 3G iPhone. They say it looked like it, all shiny and black.
And the only thing we know for sure now is that the above is just a case.
There is no such thing as a rumor - only LIES!!
I think it would be a step back for Apple to make a plastic iphone. They SHOULD refine the design, but taking a step back on materials would suck.
UNLESS: they need to do this in order to keep their price down and profit margin up, while offering more. After all, I dont think it will matter WHAT its made of, because everyone is going to upgrade eventually anyway.
Badongadoodle!™
@Jesus Diaz: I realise that, and wasn't crisicising Giz in any way, just pointing it out for the commenters who didn't seem to make the connection...
*millions of fanboys cry everywhere*
I'm just trying to get this E815 working that someone fucked me over on on ebay.
I wouldn't be so quick to discount the 2nd gen iPhone from having an all-black plastic back cover. If the new version does indeed have GPS, that antenna would have to be located somewhere on the back of the phone and probably not at the bottom where the current GSM antenna is located. Would the current aluminum back cover not block those GPS signals, whereas a plastic cover would not?
Just a thought...
@legacye:
A WELCOME ALTERNATIVE TO MAC LOVIN'
@legacye:
Ha Ha...
To those that are offended by the term "fanboy," I apologize. It's a term that applies to anyone and everyone that loves this $hit. Myself included.
@Jesus Diaz:
YEAH, MATT SAID SOME THIRD OR FOURTH HAND THING YESTERDAY ABOUT SOME HIGH LEVEL SOURCE OF A SOURCE OF A SOURCE OR SOMETHING.
@LOLLYJOLLY:
Welcome aboard!
If you weren't aware, using all caps on a post is considered "shouting".
Emphasis is great, but it's lost when that's all there is. ;)
As for THIS, well, you folks will fall for anything iPod, wontcha?
If this was a pond the fish would be biting at nearly anything.
Engadget never said that this picture would be the new iphone, the picture was here to illustrate a possibility, with a big white question mark on it that you actually removed in your late copy-paste of their article. It was all about the infos on the iphone and not this pld picture.
I am getting tired of this pettyness, at least Engadget never talk shit about Gizmodo and actually try to do their job.
I think the confusion came about because Giz seems to be more biased towards Apple.
@guesserit: Do you have reading and comprehension problems or you didn't even bother to RTFA?
Engadget: The 3G iPhone will be glossy black, slightly different in form, and feature actual GPS.
Gizmodo: That's great, but for the record, that black iPhone image is fake.
Game over. Everyone TFSU.
@Jesus Diaz:
Though you didn't claim anything, your boy Haroon is clearly trying to smack talk at Engadget insinuating that they got the picture wrong.
Anyone who RTA will see that Engadget was quoting from a "trusted source who got a chance to check one out", not basing the "rumor" on iPod Observer's pic.
Like many on here, I check both your sites religiously, and you both take turns getting some good scoops...but your boy Haroon has gotta grow up.
Lots of interest, lots of rumors (supposedly there'll be multiple 2nd generation versions). Some of my favorites:
- Sport version will come with an 8" tail that will help the device maintain balance when used during athletic activities as well as express emotions through lateral movement.
- A PETA version will be made almost entirely of faux meat suspended over a skeletal lattice for support. While edible, consuming the phone will void AppleCare.
- Ultimate fanboy version will be a 4 inch facsimile of Steve Jobs. Software from Malibu Stacysoft will enable the phone to say signature phrases, generate arm and leg movement in response to multitouch, buy companies for IP and engineering talent, fire engineering talent randomly.
- An environmentally-friendly version will be solar powered by a Hindenburg-sized helium balloon covered in solar panels that will remain tethered to the phone and float 250 feet in the air above the user.
- "iPhone Nano" version will be exactly the same as regular version except have "Nano" engraved on the back and cost twice as much.
Meh their source is Kevin Rose
@frigg: You're an idiot.
@CTJoyce: Now that's funny!
@yelohbird: I edited Haroon's post. Who's not my or your boy.
Read the article. It doesn't say that Engadget is right or wrong. It says that the image everyone (including us) published as a possible iPhone 3G is just an iphone case.
@frigg: *while I'd probably buy each and every one if true, THESE ARE ONLY RUMORS! Just wanted to stress that.
Way to go Giz! Great job exposing the truth! I've been walking around with the "3G iPhone" for a few weeks now. Thanks a lot. Now I'll never get laid...
@legacye: Sadly all windows fans remain dedicated virgins.
I am happy with my tilt though. When I went to go get it the bastard at the AT&T store was trying to convince me to buy the damn iphone.
@frigg: Good God, I am so grateful the iPhone never looked like Kevin Rose's description. That thing sounded maximum ugly.
@Everyone Else: Chill out. The black photo was actually debunked weeks ago, more or less. It was a bit silly Engadget chose to use it without acknowledging that it was known (or at least, widely accepted) to be a fake, and only happened to coincidentally resemble the rumored makeover. People who didn't read closely enough thought it was a spy shot, but it never was.
Posting this, today, is good because it doesn't discredit the rumor, but finally puts the photo to rest. Good on you, Jesus.
Personally, I just don't want it to get fatter than the original.
Clever. Clever. Good job. But would Ryan Block lie to us?
First rule for me is...if you're loyal to Gizmodo, always be wary of Engadget. LOL.
That's a pretty sexy case.
@JustEaton:
-AND IT WILL INCLUDE AN ERECTION JUST FOR YOU.
STEVIE LIKES YOU DO YOU LIKE HIM?
YES NO
I'm sure Gizmodo is loving the news.
you know
just because a similar case is being sold doesnt mean the photo wasn't legit
right after Macworld 07 there were tons of iphone stuff in Hong Kong
those photos could be of the actual iphone
and now someone knocked it off with a case
Frankly, I think it'd be shamefull if they went with a glossy black shell anyway. IMHO, that looks really chintzy. Go with a carbon composite type look (dull dark gray or something).
Who needs a 3G iphone, I'll just buy the case when the new phone does come out and pretend to have one!
@OMG! Ponies!: Er, lots of places were speculating on this.
engadget... DISSSSSSS
Rumors are like finger smudges that keep showing up on glossy surfaces...
I seem to recall a Giz posting saying the new IPhone will be impervious to sniper fire!!!
@Buran: Trace it back to the source iPodObserver, which indeed billed it as an actual shot and continues to bill it as an actual leaked photo.
At least that's my interpretation of "If the image proves to be legit, however, the glossy black finish will make a nice addition to the up-and-coming executive's tech stash." Further, Engadget's disclaimer has only recently been put up (ie - more than an hour after this post went up).
I'll amend my lesson - click through all the way to the "source".
Trusting any blog, be it Engadget, Gizmodo, or any other one is like swimming in the kiddie pool. You don't know what crap is floating around in there or who's spewing it.
i guess i'm the only one confused: it looks like a plastic bag is over the phone? Just like the picture above?
bold industrial design but i like it! the ultimate in hobo chic.
