According to HD Guru, Sony's not content with its less-than-number-one status in flat panels, so it's planning to claw its way back into consumers' hearts with deep price cuts on all of its 2008 models next month. The other guys, like Samsung, LG and Sharp, are already planning their own price war counter-attacks. And then, in reaction to the wave of cheap LCDs, plasma dudes like Panasonic (check our quick and dirty guide to plasmas) will prolly be doing their own slashing. Conclusion: Wait till May to buy an HDTV, 'cause it'll be mucho cheaper.
To give you an idea of how much you might save, for instance, Sony's cutting $400 off its 46-inch KDL-46S4100, to $1599, and $500 off its newest 1080p 40-incher, to $1199. So we're looking at discounts in the 20-25 percent range, which is none too shabby, and definitely worth holding off for a couple weeks on your Best Buy TV hunting expedition. [HD Guru]

I figured this would happen in mid/may when the rebate checks were in peoples hands anyway.
To everyone who bought a TV over the last year:
Here's a tissue.
You can all thank me later. I made prices go down when I bought a TV last month. As soon as I buy anything, the price goes down. You're welcome, bitches!!
thanks Munch.
Sweet, I was currently looking into some new Toshiba TVs and now I can expect to pay less for them weeeeee!
@Munch: Buy some expensive well-designed bathtubs... I need one cheap!
@Munch: @Munch: HAHAHA... Sorry, I do that alot too.
yeah, bargainjack.com has some good deals!
Yeah May is tomorrow! One more day folks!
25% price cuts!? Excuse me....
*fap fap fap*
::hangs head in disgust and tries to convince self that the last 5 months of Madden in HD was worth it:: .....smiles.....yeah, it was worth it.
@Darrone: DAMN! I bought a TV last month, give me a punching bag! or a discontinued Samsung to beat on...
@Hiphopopotamus: Sorry, dude. Not going to happen - I'm straight.
Yawn. Still loving my Sany PLV-Z2000 and my 120" screen.
Get back to me when they knock $100 of the PS3 or when BluRay discs are $10.
This may push up my purchasing date. I was hoping to wait till next year, but now I may have to jump early.
@Munch: Stay where you are and hold that thought while I apply for my MBA.
Even though I don't have too much of an interst in HDTVs, it's nice to hear that the price is gonna go down, all things considered.
@Munch: Hold it right there, Munch! Is that some kind of backhanded way of saying that if you buy an expensive, well-designed bathtub you must be gay? Well, I'm saving up right now for that marvelous Teuco Sorgente bathtub we saw Sunday on Giz, you know the one with the fabulous flush-to-the-floor design and simply exquisite marble surround, and I AM DEFINITELY NOT...umm...
Nevermind.
I've never understood the disatisfaction of buying something and finding out months later that it is available for less money. That is, literally, the price of progress. If we really wanted to avoid that feeling, we'd all just pick a year in which the technology meets our every need and stick with it eternally, i.e. the Amish.
How about the ones in sane sizes? You know, that might fit in an apartment-dweller's living room? Are those going to see any price cuts?
They're doing this to lure you into PS3 lovin'.
so in other words, the TV we buy in May will be obsolete in July? Damn, I just bought that 13" black&white GE tube with the round dials yesterday! and I still need some rabbit ears!
@monkeyrotica: Apparently you can get $100 off a PS3 by signing up for a Sony Visa card and purchasing a PS3 with it. So, ~$300 for a PS3, or only $50 more than a Wii. Of course, it might only be used for playing BR movies, but at that price it is probably worth it.
i needz a nu tv
@OG512: Mmm, bad news about those Rabbit Ears...
@OG512: I think I got a pair under all the junk in my garage.
Great, they're just going to keep getting cheaper. Still can't afford one just yet. The great thing about the mass transition to flat screens is that you can find the old school CRT sets for literally nothing. My living room TV is 32", was put out next to the dumpster and was much better than the TV I did have. Soon, you want be able to give CRTs away.
@Munch: Seems I share that price-lowering power. Just bought a second HDTV for the bedroom.
Crap crap crap.
I still feel pretty damn good about my purchase last month. Brand new Sony KDL-52XBR4 for $2,800 at Fry's. I'm loving every second of it!
@HeartBurnKid: I second that. Small apartments don't need tvs that are wider than your own armspan.
It's still a $1200 and $1600 TV....
I'd rather put that $$ to a hackintosh or something like that. My 37in westy is still holding (more or less) strong
So are you telling me I'll be able to buy that 150" HDTV with my $2,100.00 tax rebate check I'm expecting to get in May? SWEET!!!
So can anyone give me any pointers on a roughly 37" hdtv on the cheap (meaning if I spend more than $900 my wife will kill me)? I'm looking at the Vizio Envy series but not sure if that is a good way to go, i can't find anyone that has reviewed it.
@Margatron: amen, my couch is 5 feet from my TV. Don't really think i should have to turn my head back and forth to watch a movie.
@Darrone:
I bought 3 HDTV's in the past year, and I'm happy for those that will be getting cheaper prices next month. Knowing that it will be MUCH cheaper mere moments after you pay the cashier is just a part of buying most electronics.
Sony Haters? where are they now?
@EQC: we only "hate" on sony when they put out shoddy half-baked products or try to force proprietary drm or rootkits on us.
@apeguero: Keep dreaming
For all ppl out there that don't have hdtv. By 09, u'll need to buy one or else u cant watch tv cause they are converting analog to digital. And if your thinking of using ur old crt and a digital to analog converter, go here and read [www.cnn.com]
any word on Sony's XBR line? If this cut is across the board, sign me up. The XBR's seemed to be aimed towards the luxury guys though and price cuts for them are usually pretty useless...
Wow, %25 and then go and haggle [gizmodo.com]
Hey, if you look REAL closely, you can find a 65 inch LCD for 1300 bucks, refurbished. I won't post links because i want it first but if you look............
@B: You don't need a HDTV to receive digital broadcasts. Just because it's digital doesn't mean that it's HDTV. You can pick up one of the converters for $20 with your $40 coupon. All it will mean is that viewers with analog TV's may be inconvenienced by having to push their zoom buttons on the remote controls or dealing with some black bars around the picture.
About time, I was hoping this wouldn't take too much longer. Now to watch the deals websites, and wait.
Dirt cheap? How about a Blu-ray player for $150?
so vizios will be 500-750? lol
1. Search Internets
2. Buy TV
3. Profit..
@dsnovak5: Profit? Where are you selling the TV? :-P
Comment on Dealzmodo Ahoy: HDTVs Will Get Stupid Cheap Next Month It makes common sense to me that the biggest price wars/drops will come in 2009 just as regular TV broadcasts cease. Can't you see all those ads "Get a new HDTV because your old one will quit working in April 2009".... I believe that will be the biggest push of volume sales the nearer we get to that cessage date....talk about competition!
Are SONY Bravias any good? What about Vizio vs. Olevia?
@LuciusHalomiosis:
I think you bring up a good bit of info.
@LuciusHalomiosis: 2009??? Wait til 2050 or so, LCD tv's will be REALLY STUPID cheap!
