BlackBerry Kickstart Launching on T-Mobile, Less Ugly Than Suspected

Boy Genius has a new round of shots and specs for RIM's first BlackBerry clamshell, the Kickstart. Most important, it's launching on T-Mobile, but a close second is that it's not quite as design challenged as it originally appeared. Here, it actually looks good, at least as good as flip phones can look, and seems like it'll come in a full Skittles rainbow. Specs are pretty average (definitely a consumer phone), notably lacking 3G. But it's got Wi-Fi, 2MP cam, internal LCD is 320x240, external is 160x128, and it's running the 4.6 OS—same as as the 9000. BGR's pegging Sept. as release date. [BGR]

Still really thick. Don't they realize people don't want a beefy phone? Jeez.

  • Actually it might be the best looking BB to date.

  • If this BB was really going to be aimed at the consumer market, you would think that they would make it a bit slimmer. That being said, I have nothing against BB's but I would never get one for fear that my office would never let me get a moments rest. I adamantly refuse to be tethered to my soul draining job 24/7.

  • Not too shabby. It is pretty thick, but definitely a step up, design-wise, from previous RIM devices. No 3G is probably a mistake. Don't know why they would exclude this when competitors (and even RIM) are starting to implement 3G in new devices. Maybe it will be cheaper than the 3G Blackberries?

  • Um, I'd actually like a phone with a little more beef in it...If I ever get one... Thinner isn't better!

  • This is coming to Tmobile first, but then ATT is next. I'm just hoping ATT gets the BB 9000 soon! ME WANTS

  • I like it. It's too thick (at least going by the pics, I haven't seen actual dimensions) but I suppose future generations will be slimmer.

  • @TOWken22: Yeah I agree with you. Motorola already proved that a crappy RAZR thin phone will sell like hotcakes regardless of how old/slow/horrible the operating system is.

I also didn't want to be tetherd, they gave me a BB at work and I left it in the drawer. The only time I brought it out was for training, and at that time I would use it to play breakout.

  • This is RAD (LOL) I thinks me likes it pretty well. I personally don't mind the extra bulk, and I like what appears to be the caller Id screen on the front, and it looks pretty decent screen-wise too...weird though that T-Mob gets it first..

Not too shabby, like the blue for sure.

    Faslane

  • @Marty_MacFly: Well judging by the rendering, it's about as thick as two headphone jacks.

  • @redrabbit:

Why would you prefer a thicker phone?

    Thinner IS better, IMHO:
Easier to get in and out of pockets.
    Typically Lighter.
    Aesthetically more appealing.
Today's thin phones don't sacrifice features.

There is a reason that phone manufacturers are coming out with thinner phones. You are in the minority here.

What advantages does a thicker phone have anyway? I suppose you are one of those guys who has a cool belt clip for your cell phone?

  • @matt buchanan: Nah, it's more like three.

I'd estimate it to be about 17-20mm thick. Not to mention it's very tall and wide as we saw with the first picture.

    It's like a fat RAZR2.

  • At least its not being tagged as an iPhone Killer. It's not ugly, but it looks dated already. Hate to say it, but the iPhone make these type of phones look archaic.

  • I have to jump on the thinner bandwagon.

I would never had purchased my Dash if it were that thick. Now it needs to have a little weight to it so I don't sit on it and crush it (Ask my old samsung). But even with big hands, thin is nice..just not narrow.
    I'm a man not a hobbit...

  • @Ken_Darrow: just one day; one post; without the iphone comparisons...geez

  • Image of Kaiser-Machead Kaiser-Machead at 01:29 PM on 05/02/08 *

I have to agree with thinner being better at this point. I don't care for every gadget I own to be slimmed down, being able to easily pocket a cell phone without it being a big lump on the side of your slacks is a beneficial design element.

  • @One2ManyCords: and why not? we should compare all phones with the iphone because Apple raised the bar. We let them get away with too much crap designs for so long.

  • @justinpe: No I actually don't have a belt clip because if you read my post correctly you would've noticed "If I ever get a cell phone". The belt clips are evidently thicker then this phone, I like to have a nice grip on something when I'm holding it. I don't suppose you're the type of person who'd buy a paper-thin cell phone when/if they come out? The razor is too thin, the iPhone too wide, but this one doesn't seem too bad. I'm still not going to buy a cell until I see the perfect one, appealing on the outside AND inside.

  • Touché on the "if I ever get one" part of your comment. I was assuming that if you ever got a new cell phone.

I still don't understand why "Thinner isn't better." It may not ALWAYS be better, but your statement suggests that it is never better.

  • Your right, I didn't suggest that thinner is never better, I'll do that now. I may or may not be in the minority here, but a cell phone has to fit snuggely into my hand. That means it can't be too wide, it can't be too thin, it has to be something I can use with one hand, I definetly don't want the whole damn screen to be touch-screen either. This is what I'm personally looking for in a phone, and it perplexes me when people go for the newest thing, just because it's the newest thing. Finding a phone that suits my needs won't be easy.

  • I guess no one has noticed how email unfriendly this thing looks. It just doesn't look typer intuitive. Since BB's bread and butter is email and hyper-texting, this just doest look like it will get the job done very well

  • @redrabbit:

    Here's a phone for you:

  • Hmm, it might've appealed to me a couple years ago, but the aesthetics is kinda a turn-off lol. A neat futuristic cellphone design that incorporates what I said would be cool, lol...

  • @jrbd90: that was a good one...

    Thanks for the laugh

  • @One2ManyCords:

You're right, but I think RIM will be trying to market this to consumers, especially when you consider there is no 3G. Current Blackberry owners and business consumers will probably not be interested in this phone.

  • no 3G ... why not? don't they realize people want the latest and greatest and are willing to pay for it? dang

  • why are other manufacturers even bothering to make phones now that the iPhone exists?

  • @redrabbit:

It sounds like you are very particular about what kind of cell phone you would like. I'm sure there is something out there that will suit your needs. There are literally thousands of options.

I don't think too many people go for the newest thing simply because it is "the newest thing." People buy the newest things because they have new features that make them easier and more fun to use.

  • @sonicwind: some people don't like being considered a douche.

  • @sonicwind:

Because the iPhone doesn't please everyone, and ATT is not available in all areas.

Also, they like money and hate Apple.

  • @stupidjerk:

Being considered a douche by someone who makes comments like you wouldn't bother most people.

It's like a mentally retarded person calling someone an idiot :)

  • @redrabbit: Here's the phone for you:

but no, seriously, I tend to agree with you. I've been using my RAZR for quite some time now. And although I do like the slim design for pocketing it, I don't like the feel of holding it for use. It feels too flimsy, and I always sit on it and think I'm going to break it. I can see where you would prefer something with just a LITTLE more substance to the physical design....

@Ken_Darrow: @sonicwind: and why does every freakin phone have to get compared to the damn iPhone?!? Can't you fanboys think about anything besides riding the jock of The Steve??

  • @sonicwind: LOL.

  • @chopstickhero: not EVERYONE is willing to pay for the latest and greatest. If they can keep the price lower and plan to target this more toward the average consumer market...the average consumer probably doesn't even know what 3G is, let alone willing to pay extra to get it.

  • @justinpe: just like making a comment that might be anti-apple on this sight is like telling a nazi that the jew's are alright guys.

  • I don't like the curve on it and that color is horrendous

  • @stupidjerk: Or making a Jew joke on a site with a lot of Jews.

  • It's like the girl next door. She isn't ugly, can do the job, and I will probably end up marrying her.

But, there is that hot new chick moving in next door in a couple months that is called 'the second coming'. Tough to keep your eyes off her.

  • @shamoononon: no offense to the Jewish community intended at all...just likening the fanboy crowd to overzealous, offended someone might not like apple, knee-jerk mentality

  • @stupidjerk: Well now, if you said something about potatoes, beer, and the Irish then I'd really be steaming :)~

  • I KNEW IT!!! The first picture showed it in a room with tiling that suggested it was the bathroom of a T-Mobile store. Either I'm too observant or it actually was a bathroom from a T-Mobile store and I unraveled this mystery and should get a free one *wink wink*

But seriously did anyone see that comment?

  • From the looks of Wi-Fi it will likely have UMA like the 8320, 8820 and 8120 phones on t-mobile which is the greatest thing ever for anyone that travels internationally or spends 80% of the day in a place that is blanketed by wifi coverage at home/office. I wonder what the price will be, has to be less than pearl i would hope.

  • @justinpe: I like phones with a bit of weight to them too. I already have a BB 8700 and if I didn't hate flip phones, this would be the one that I would get.

  • I'm confused how anyone would think it's 'thick.' No specs, as far as I can tell, and the image accompanying this post is pretty obviously a render, which means everyone pretty much commenting on vaporware at this point.

  • @willentrekin: You're right on the no-spec part, but it has a ~3.1 mil USB jack. I haven't actually measured it or anything, but I'm guessing the phone is about 13 mils thick.

I don't think that that's too bad. However, that would mean that the headphone jack is probably the less than universal 2.5 mil standard, judging by the pic. Is this common in blackberry phones?

  • I'd guess it's maybe marginally thicker than the 8310 but it is interesting how everyone's an expert on the Kickstart's dimensions based on a photo (not that that's new or anything)....

  • apparently, i'm the only one who doesn't still think the iphone is the end-all-be-all of cell phone design.

it's the bestest most amazingest thing ever and can't possible be improved. until v2 comes out, the latest&greatest, and the fanboys move on.
