The month-long saga of the Borg (in FSJ's words) assimilating Yahoo might finally be coming to a close, with the two finally entering into actual merger negotiations, according to the NY Times. Microsoft has reportedly upped its original $44.6 billion bid by several billion. The deal might still fall apart, but they're actively doing the dance. Looks like this could actually happen, folks. It could still fall through, sure, but I had a feeling Microsoft might be convinced to pony up after Yahoo's revelation of Open Platform, or whatever their integrated social network initiative is. A social network potentially comprising all of Yahoo's userbase (and you'd have to assume the base of Windows Live, too) and tied integrally to all of Yahoo's properties like Flickr, Mail, and Del.icio.us? Prospect = $$$$$.
Yes, please. And PS, more Allard in dreadlocks!
Is it just me, or do Gizmodo's captioned photos get funnier with each repetition?
This will be good competition for Google.
Let's just see how good Microsoft really is with Yahoo. :)
All I know is this: Every time I see that picture I have an uncontrollable desire to get some Dick's burgers. Sadly, I can even tell he's at the Queen Anne location.
Bleugh.... I've been putting off the jump to Google too... Yes, I'm one of the few who still uses Yahoo mail... I thought about making the change when my friend sent me an invite before they opened it up to the public about a year and a half ago too. I guess now is as good as any time to open a Gmail account...
I hope they finally seal the deal. Can't wait for the cool stuff to come out when the two merge.
Either they come to some kind of agreement to the merger, or they buy AOL like an article suggested (link-[blog.wired.com])
I wonder if Microsoft is considering the value of Yahoo after those of us move to Google after the merger. I can't imaging that I'd want to use Yahoo after Microsoft messes with it. This isn't anti-microsoft sentiment, this is because I've had the choice of Yahoo, Google and Microsoft for some time now. I've tried Microsoft services and they come in a distant 3rd. If Yahoo becomes more Microsoft-like, some people may prefer that, but personally, I'm likely to move to Google.

I don't know anyone who even uses Yahoo, kind of like AOL.
Nonetheless I hope Microsoft and take it and do something good with it.
but combining their names yields nothing fun! Microoo? Yahoosoft?
shenanigans.
@Paradise:
I was thinking Softchoo.
@kibets:
aol truly sucks balls. on the other hand, many people in asia (japan and s.korea especially) and europe use yahoo.
I started the free mail with @usa.net until they went premium, and with no other choice I moved to Yahoo! and still uses it.
Sometime ago I received an invite for gmail - I need to locate it - or still, do you need it anymore or is it open these days ?
@Bachus_snowman:
you do not need it anymore.
I could care less about Yahoo as a company, but I'm worried what Microsoft will do with the other services like Del.icio.us and Flickr. :-(
