We like Terminator as much as we hate companies who rip-off the work of artists without even crediting them. This is apparently what happened with the poster used to promote the bland Sarah Connor Cronicles TV series: some blogs are reporting that the Fox channel's poster was allegedly copied straight from a striking montage created by someone else before the series were even announced. Compare the full images after the jump (NSFW).

As you can see, unlike the Sony Bravia ad, this is not just "inspiration", this is a direct copy in which some elements are copy-pasted. We have to say we had high hopes for the series, but apparently it was headed to the Department of Mleh right from the start. If they wanted to copy something, they could have followed the Terminators' sex positions. [My Confined Space via Hollywood Newsroom]
Update: We know it there's the possibility that this may be by the same artist or licensed. But we are reporting on what other blogs are reporting, which is exactly why I wrote "apparently what happened" and "was allegedly copied" in the article. I've changed the headline to make this position even clearer.

I hope the student sued their asses. As an artist, there is nothing worse than someone stealing your stuff and making money from it.
-And also a ripoff of The Borg Queen from the Star Trek movie.
They should have also ripped off a girl as cute as the one on the right.
The student should sue Fox just for a laugh.
Lovely. Way to steal someone's work!
As an artist and editor, I hate plagiarism. The student should definitely take them to court
perfect bellybutton
@fudged71: people are plagiarism, repeating same memes to each other all the time.
No one has said the word "boobs" yet! This must be some kind of Gizmodo record!
I thought Sarah Connor Chronicles was an awesome show...
I like boobs; every hot babe should have at least two of them.
The artist shouldn't have to sue. As soon as one of the execs was made aware of the rip off the artists that stole the work should be fired and sued by the network. Then they can pay rightful artist.
Why is it so hard for corps to do the right thing and how do they expect the average joe to not share files when they are actively involved in stealing from the artists also?
As an artist, I wouldn't mind if someone decided take influence from, or even recreate my personal work. I don't have illusions that I create something new or unique, I just absorb what is around me, just like everyone else. But for heavens sake! That arm is a direct copy/paste! I really hope some asses get whipped because of such tasteless plagiarism.
Maybe they didn't steal anyones work.. maybe you guys are jumping the gun and they ASKED PERMISSION and got rights to use the work. Something many artist would probably love..
which one is the orginal man?
1) I didn't think the series was that bad.
2) I think the new female Terminator is hot.
3) I think cut-and-paste design theft is extremely poor form.
4) I am very happy that Giz found an excuse to post the original pic, as she is even hotter than the female Terminator.
5) I may feel differently re: the relative hotness of these two girls if I could see both pairs of breasts and the same amount of torso.
Question, since blogs are always so quick to condemn.
Where is the actual story that says the student that did this is not ok with it? Or an article that says the student was not paid for the work? Or an article that says the student did not create this for the ad campaign because of his previous work?
The linked story doesn't say, and neither does the article here.
So are you just assuming that the original artist had nothing to do with the artwork for Terminator?
@smcallahGiz chill out man
Why all the hate on the Terminator series. I like it.
@fudged71:
why? they didnt steal his work. they stole his work whom HE ripped off from the borg queen in ST (as someone else already mentioned).
neither one is original.
@Leonard Nimrod:
me to.. im very happy its coming back :)
The Sarah Connor Chronicles ROCK!! Stop the Hate.
As for plagiarism yes it is. Was it purposeful I don't know. It's very possible someone saw the original years ago when it came out but later forgot about it but it became a subconscious inspiration for this one. This happens quite frequently actually and is the cause for the spread of a lot of ideas around the world.
Who says the said student didn't make both of those?
Yeah the show had a lot of inconsistencies but so did the films (even without the crappy third installment. In the end I think the show is better than a lot of other shows on TV.
Nothing to say about the artwork here other than "hot"!
Ad: ripped off.
Series? Pretty damned good. Just goes to show you; anyone can get paid to be "edgy" and "hip" on a corporate blog.
The show was great.
I too agree both of these are ripoff of the Borg Queen.
Here's a link to an image of the Borg Queen scene.

Yes SCC is awesome, great SciFi TV. Summer Glau (the incredibly hot female Terminator) is my TV girlfriend.
Jesus Diaz, we need to step outside to have words...
@MacBandit: The arm, down to the position of the wires, is identical (with some extra wires thrown in).
But as others have said, we don't know that the original artist wasn't involved in the Terminator poster.
i want the students name, she will be my wife! all of you stop looking at the picture!!!
Human beings have existed a pretty long time and they have written, drawn, painted, sculpted, and imagines a *lot* of things. I think we are awfully quick to call images and ideas a "rip off" when we have no idea where they come from originally. We need to relax on that stuff. Some people have mentioned the borg queen. The artist H.R. Giger has produced tons on work along these lines and themes for years and I'm certain there are others. A female robot torso is *not* a brand new concept. Almost nothing is a brand new concept.
@JacquesAss: You can see the breasts on the one on the left - just look to the right. They are the same breasts.
Damn it, you just don't pay close enough attention to breasts.
As the article and Zievee's comment pointed out, the issue isn't about simply stealing the concept. If you look at the arm, there's little doubt that the ad is derived from the earlier work.
All we have are two pictures though. We don't have the names of the artist of both pictures. What if Fox hired the artist of the non-terminator picture to make the one for the Sarah Conner Chronicles?
@Valicious:
among other things...
Whats this have to do with, "shiny new toys?" Nice bod!
jesus the arm is identical as well as the concepts
hurray for bewbies ^_^
Nice sex machines
Oh, so THAT's what's hiding behind the conspicuously positioned hair!
Sarah Conner is a sexay japanese sex bot and I love her.
Who's to say they didnt pay to copy the ad?
Either way I dont care, I dont stand to lose or make money from it so whatever.
The show itself started off slow and boring but by about episode 3 it started to pick up and it got good. Well worth watching and 1000x better then any reality tv thats crammed down our throats
Dude, it says "we have no clue where this picture came from." Most likely they were done by the same person. They obviously use the same elements. If it were purposeful plagiarism they would at least build new wires hanging out of the arm sockets.
Also there is no mention of this being a student work despite "student" being thrown around.
Sarah Connor Chronicles was probably the best thing I've seen on network TV in five or ten years. I thought it was as good as Deadwood or The Wire. And that scene in the pool of the last episode is still my favorite moment in anything cinematic. I expect that we'll see that copied. That said, I'll be surprised if it doesn't turn out that the ad and the other image aren't from the same person. The ad agencies, and especially Fox and Warner Bros., are very good about making sure there is no copyright infringement on their part.
I imagine they we done by the same artist / designer. These we're used for magazines and posters, it wouldn't make sense to copy & paste that arm unless you had a pristine high res source to copy from. The person / people most likely to have that is the designer / studio that did the Bravia ad.
ohh, and yes, liking that show means you have bad taste :P
Lets put the credit where it belongs. Both images have elements identical to The Puppet Master in Masamune Shirow's Ghost in the Shell, published 1991. Seems that the poster maker ripped the left arm wires directly from the complete torso image and both illustrators ripped different additional details from Ghost in the Shell.
If the there wasn't that shape detail on the arm, I could believe that the artist just came up with female-torso-hanging-from-straps all by himself. The doll like leg sockets at least are obviously unrealistic enough not to be plagiarized.
I am in love with Summer Glau, robot or not!
As for ripping off, meh, its my guess that none of the higher ups ever saw the other ad so the only one really at fault was whichever artist decided to copy the original (which as people have pointed out seems atleast somewhat inspired by the Borg Queen scene in First Contact).
All women should have two boobs implanted on their backs, so we have somewhere to put our hands when hugging.
um.... borg queen= simplistic concept of brain to body. that silly spinal column may as well have been a cord & pluf for all I care. Thats an easy connection to make as an artist. Yet, borg queen was first. fine.
as for the other two, just shows the American freakishness when if comes to the human body. Movie?... would have been boobies.... I'd hope.
and again, hey, cool idea, that one there. Caught my eye, thats for sure. Had to take second when I saw that first add on the subway. But as for the show?... please....
sleeper
Legless fembots FTW! :D
jesus that image is in all our dreams, and I`m sure there was a GitS wallpaper or rendering just like that
@Bloodboiler:
I was thinking the exact same thing. Here's the puppet master from the Ghost in the Shell movie (1995).

Something tells me that there's more to this story than just plagiarism...
I'll just wait for what the people behind the ad and the student who created the other version has to say about it.
But yeah, both looks nice. And well, can't tell how good the series is without watching it first.
