Microsoft Making Ford Sync-like Music, Info System for Hyundai in 2010

Hyundai and Microsoft have just agreed for the latter to develop software for the former's cars, shoving in a "music and information system" by the year 2010. No details yet, but from the sound of things it seems like Microsoft's taking advantage of their experience with the Ford Sync system and making voice-control systems to manage stereos and cellphones. The new system is also interesting because it's software-updatable, allowing nerds to bring up that old joke about what would happen if Microsoft built cars. The whole thing is aimed at bringing more young people into Hyundais, something Ford Sync was surprisingly good at doing. [Reuters]

  • Ok.. is it just me is Hyundai on the come-up. I mean there styling is getting better and that Sonata is lookin very appealing.

They are becoming the Tina Fey of the automotive world

  • will it be covered by hyundai's 10 yr/100,000 mile warranty?

  • I could have sworn that it was Microsoft Sync, not Ford Sync, and that Ford just had a limited exclusivity deal.

I really, really wish I could get an aftermarket sync setup put into my Explorer. That's cool stuff right there.

  • @Weihovah: I hope so. If not they should at least allow you to format and reinstall every other week.

  • Can you plug in your Zune?

  • @typoink: You're right. It's Microsoft Sync, and it's exclusively licensed to Ford until 2010. After that, expect to see it everywhere...

That is, until MobileOSX is released.

  • Hyundai's are the shit. My dad got a used 2006 sonata with 500 miles on it for 12 grand. Leather interior, all that shit thing looks hella nice and runs great. not to mention he still got the 10 yr./ 100,000 mile warranty, son.

  • @One2ManyCords: they've BEEN on the come up, and they're building great cars. i have an 01 elantra gt with 104k miles on it and i've yet to do anything but routine maintenance on it. my next car will likely be another hyundai.

@Weihovah: if you buy the gold warranty, then yes. otherwise that only covers the powertrain.

  • bought an 07 sonata for myself after having driven one for several weeks on the job in NY. Loved it. Then my wife liked it so much, we bought her one also. Same thing except I have the 4 banger and her the 6 (I drive 76 miles round trip to work - she only drive 2). No complaints for either one. I'm looking forward to the Hyundai pickup when they bring it over. I even heard rumor of a diesel version in the US future.

  • I think with the way the economy is going youre going to see many more american companies selling products that we once thought were only available to us. The Sync has been a great selling point for Ford vehicles and its only $500. I hope Ford is working on something else to make themselves stand out from the rest of the crowd.

  • Fancy in car computers didn't convince me to buy a Ford, they're certainly not going to convince me to buy a Hyundai.

  • Chevrolet please.

  • just taking some notes here... let me see...
Hyundai... not to buy after 2010...
    ok. thanks.

  • it will be a new concept for crashing a car...

  • Ah... Microsoft and their limited exclusivity.

  • Thats cool that they are spreading it around. I just got my 2008 Ford Fusion SEL with Sync and all kinds of fun stuff, and the Sync has been great to play with. It gets what I ask on the first time 99% of the time. Even hard stuff that I would never think it would understand (even gets songs like "Fuck her Gently" by Tenatious D, and the voice repeating it is great).

Now, I would not touch a Hyundai to get it, but for those that want a sweet, inexpensive voice recog system, Sync (or whatever they call it if you get an H) is the way to go.

  • I have two Kia's (same company as Hyundai) and they are two of the best cars I've ever owned. The quality is on par with Toyota and the gas mileage has been a godsend in high prices out the ass Seattle. Can't wait for the Sync system for Kia, it should hit just about the time I'm ready for an auto refresh. And yes, it does connect quite nicely to the Zune (I have 3)

  • @chinook11: on par w/ toyota? i dunno about that. i know this is anecdotal but everyone i know who has a kia (about 10 people) have to bring it into the dealer roughly every other month.

  • hmmm I'll stick with Nissan... but that is cool i guess

  • I work for a supplier of Ford and I have also owned two Hyundais. I say this is a nice move.

Hyundais really are outstanding cars for the money. Every bit as good as any of their competitors and at a more affordable price. I got rid of my first one only because it had no AC. It had 160,000 miles on it and still ran like a champ. No problems at all with it. The second one I put a quarter of a million miles on and it still ran fine as well. Only had to change the alternator in it.

I've had the opportunity to tinker quite a bit with Sync and it works very well. I was a bit skeptical when it first came out because I figured it would be very buggy until it was refined over time. One of those items that goes haywire seemingly intentionally so you have to take the car back to the dealership and spread your cheeks while the dealer sticks the massive bill up your ass. Turned out I was wrong. It works very well and I was thoroughly impressed. Very encouraging sign of things to come in terms of computer technology in automobiles.

  • @Weihovah: I smell bullshit.
